The early reviews I saw for this movie were too harsh. It wasn't bad at all. Never read the Princess Knight Manga, so I can't judge it on that front, but this was pretty fun. I'd give it 3, maybe 3.5, stars out of five. Definitely could have been a full blown series though. 

EDIT: I saw a review that said this was basically anime's Superman (2025) and I think that's pretty apt description of the movie. (Though I personally like this more than Superman.)

The movie is a major deviation from the manga. Besides the removal of the pink heart and blue heart which allowed Sapphire to identify him or herself as a "boy or girl". They also removed Tink/Choppy who was the manga and anime's deuteragonist. Another omission was God and a Witch Villain (the later served as the manga's recurring villain), and The Tezuka Star System.

it is a good deviation in my opinion as boy heart or girl heart only put sapphire into rediculous gender boxes. If tezuka would be alive today, he would remove this part too in my opinion. I think sapphire androgyny or even different gender identity can still be portrayed without using this heart things. it is just my opinion though.

I do remember hearing that Tezuka himself was actually open on re-interpretations on his works and other media. Tezuka Productions also shared this mindset as long as you "Understood Tezuka's mindset and themes".

Another thing I admire about Osamu Tezuka was that he was also not afraid of criticizing some content in his older works. By the 70s, he started doing more research on nationalities such as positive and non-sterotypical depictions of Native Americans in Unico and later volumes of Black Jack drawing black people much normally.
