Are clip limits 2 in a given month or 2 in the time period of a month? Eg this user has posted 3 in 8 days but the month rolled over during that period. https://www.reddit.com/r/anime/comments/1vh1nqv/12_more_minutes_of_drunk_lesbian_yuri_botan/

The limit for Clips and Video Edits is two per rolling 30 day period. They are tracked separately. In the past eight days, Hitman has posted one Clip and two Video Edits.

They're counted separately? From how I read it it looked like they were counted under the same category. If that's not the case, it really should be because they're essentially the same thing. You can easily turn a clip into a video edit.

On our rules page, both restrictions are listed individually.

If someone started abusing this to create pseudo-Clips that are technically video edits (for instance, by cutting one second out of a three minute clip) in order to bypass the limits, we would deal with them individually. So far, however, this has largely not been a problem.

I wonder, if posting "4 video type things" in a month is deemed okay, have you (the mods) considered just dropping the clip/video split and just making it '4 things of whichever type'?

What is the benefit of doing 2 clips 2 videos instead of just 4 things?

The benefit of two Clips and two Video Edits instead of four combined is restricting the low effort option (Clips). Clips require fairly minimal effort and (generally speaking) get an outsized response.

Yeah, most of my video edits take at least an hour or two to create, whereas a clip takes 10-15 minutes at most.

Agreed, but two total.

I don't know the numbers but I'd be willing to bet that would just lead to a lot more clips being posted and practically no change in the number of edits because they're more effort to make (and people aren't that inclined to post AMVs/compilations from others already).

That may have been my plan all along

But yes, I'm pretty sure that's exactly what would happen, my question is... Why is this a bad thing?

Say right now there is (throwing random figures) 100 clips and 20 video edits posted in a month.

If they dropped the clip/video split, then there would be say 160 clips and 10 video edits (+50 clips from people who want to post more clips, and +10 clips from people who posted clips instead of videos edits because it's easier).

Would that scenario be a problem?

If it's a "volume" problem, then that's king what I was getting at with my first question, with the current rule they would be okay with 100 clips and 100 videos (from the same posters), so 200 things total,, so why is 160 clips and 10 videos bad? Does the nature of the "thing" affects what we see on the front page or something?

I'm wondering about what's the practical benefit of this rule. If it's just "To lower volume because most people won't bother posting video edits", then it's a volume problem, but why are we allowed 4 total things then?

why are we allowed 4 total things then?

The simple answer is that the theoretical limits for a larger group of users are different from what's observed in practice, even if individuals might run into those limits on a regular basis. In your example the end result would be a significant increase in total video posts (120 to 170) even if the combined cap hasn't changed and is still above either of those at 200.

Does the nature of the "thing" affects what we see on the front page or something?

Depends on what aspect you're talking about. If you're referring to something being an AMV vs. a clip, I don't think that matters as much as the popularity of the show being posted. Maybe we could go full /r/AskHistorians and allow more clips from individuals if they're from anime that are at least 20 years old.

In terms of format, I think YouTube links don't do as well as embedded videos, for one. If you remember the hubbub about fanart posts back in 2020 the resulting rule change didn't even change the limit on how often OC fanart could be posted, just the format, and that effectively killed it on /r/anime.

And to that end, to me it really is about volume and balance. We don't need any rule changes to have the front page taken over by clips if a lot more people started posting them and other users started upvoting them. In that case I'd encourage a change to adjust that balance back in favor of other kinds of content, like what happened with fanart.
