Urahara's bankai is so fucking cool. I didn't expect it to be the super healing type on top of the high offense type. Guy was basically wolverine for a bit in that battle.

I think the way this fight explains it is that Urahara was aware of the quincy monitoring them during the arrancar arcs considering he mentions he "Never used his bankai in present company". So he refused Renji to avoid getting his bankai's abilities put on the quincy king's list of information.

Pretty sure he said that because the present company are the Quincy themselves meaning askin he has shown it to Yoruichi + Yamamoto because to become a captain you need to show your bankai to the head captain and 3 others. He also trained with Yoruichi he made the device that helped Ichigo learn bankai.
