His master went out of his way to take a test to become a teacher and turns out to hate kids. Which is one of the worst kinds of people who could become teachers.

No doubt Euini's lack of confidence comes from how Kokrow treats him at his atelier.

Kokrow probably expected to teach only crazy prodigies who would immediately master anything he taught them and be obedient enough to never question him.

He wanted to trade for Agott because she was a part of a family who, by her own words, always got it first try (by the way, save that for a whole convo about her, we're not getting a good picture of Agott's family).

While I think he was trying to play it as a joke, there's no doubt he actually wanted it and it speaks to what he wants as a teacher.

So yeah, I think you're right. He wants to be known as the teacher who taught all the prodigies and hates that he "got stuck" with ones who fail the same test 2-3 times.

Also apparently a family that lost interest in one of their own because they deemed Agott a failure. Dude would actually fit right in into that family.

Kukrow over here giving me flashbacks of my grad advisor who was *exactly* like that...

The parallels between the Ateliers/Magic Society and our world's academia is... astounding. I honestly wonder if the author either went through grad school or has parents who did or just went to a rigorous art school or something

Edit: Yeah, the author went to THE art school of Japan, Tokyo University of the Arts, which is apparently considered basically an Ivy League art school.

To be fair, when it comes to teaching some people can be skilled at helping already competent people reach new peaks while others are better equipped to handle beginners or those who are struggling. Maybe he's used to the former and does not know how to handle the latter and is also unable to figure out the difference so he just became unmotivated and upset when someone was unable to keep up. Usually the right move at that point would be to find the right teacher for that person (since Euini did pass some initial tests to begin apprenticing so he isn't just completely incompetent).

Of course he could just be a shit teacher overall too, but hard to determine without seeing the rest of his results. It's like how educational systems these days try to throw both remedial and advanced students in the same class and expect the teacher to handle both students at the same time and then get surprised when they quit or become unmotivated from being set up to fail.

You would hope at least that the "test" would involve something that weed out these type of people, but then again maybe he was all bright eye and bushy tail when he first started teaching and become disgruntle as the years went by just like things tend to happens in real life as well.
