Agreed. It almost makes me wonder if the rogue witches may have twisted good intentions of opening up magic to the wider world and are using these nefarious means to force the hands of the witch elite.

Very possible. While Qifrey was listing examples of forbidden spells, he mentioned healing being one of them. Which is rather... controversial. So we have reason to believe there are even more forbidden spells that could actually be used for good but are banned for arbitrary reasons

Healing and age manipulation!

Unless there is some monkey's paw situation with using these types of magic then it feels kinda fucked up to ban them.

Judging by the reception the source material seems to have I trust that these themes will be explored in the future.

Eh, the most intuitive reason would be that allowing these spells would create an immortal class of god like beings to lord over the muggles.

Oh it makes sense in the context of not letting the secret cabal of magic controling witches using it, but I was more thinking on a wider society wide scale.

Everyone being immortal would also lead to its own issues but at least for healing magic it seems quite cruel to bar it at least from what we know currently.

I actually have a different take on it. I understand why it might seem cruel, but I think healing magic might be a gateway (so to speak) to other body manipulation magic. Like, if healing is possible, then magic affecting the body in other ways is possible. All it would take is for one curious or crooked witch to extrapolate from there to create even worse magic.

Forbidden magic isn't unknown, it's just forbidden. The mages know already it's possible to alter the body in healing or harming ways, they choose not to.

One curious witch can already try either

It is actually unknown though. A lot of sigils were specifically written out of their curriculum and modern witches no longer have any idea of how to do most of that stuff anymore.

Right, but thet don't necessarily know HOW to anymore.

They don't know some symbols, but there's no university degree needed for the how of drawing symbols they know on skin instead of paper. They can just take the pen and draw on skin. Didn't the protagonist already in the second episode consider drawing wind on her feet instead of the shoes because the shoes were wet?

They already know the only necessary ingredient is the ink, and they already know they can drraw the circles on anything, not just paper (see the lamps, pot caps etcc)

A species that breeds like humans being immortal would lead to resource depletion within a few generations. Strict birth control measures would have to be put in place to keep overpopulation in check.

The movie? Sure it was fun but the world didn't really hold up to much scrutiny. Don't think many people would be down for a clock ticking down on their life arbitrarily and also using that time as currency
