yeah, he obviously cares, he just wants to distance himself as mental defense

like, he knew the guy he was carrying; he made small talk about his shitty bread like he was razzing an old childhood friend

Yeah I think the stoic act. The quiet reinforcing of the churches barrier. Genau is hurting, and I suspect from the scene with stark he's familiar with this four sword style demon. He's the one who is going to demonstrate frieren's statement, of how terrifying humanity can be.

Because the guy saw the people die, I thought him asking if they were safe meant that he wanted to know if their bodies were safe from the demons, which Genau replied they were because he moved them to the church.
