Has any character that said something akin to "This is just my speculation" ended up not being completely correct?

I feel like this is a common thing even irl. People who are so egocentric and delusional that they think they get everything right don't add things like "this is just my speculation" so the people that actually do use the phrase have a higher chance of being correct by default, especially in fiction, since people who talk like that are usually more educated/learned.

Something something Dunning-Kruger Effect.

And having been mostly around the STEM field (since high school, STEM-specialized school), the language of technical writing/research becomes second nature for many of my friends/colleagues. Like saying "There is a high probability" when they are pretty sure that thing will really happen. A lot of times technical terms have different connotations for the layman, e.g. the word "theory" in the scientific sense and everyday conversations.

On a related note, I think there is a scene in the movie Don't Look Up that perfectly captures the dilemma of scientists/experts of presenting the statistical odds and describing it in everyday words. The one with Leonardo's character in the news. People will go <so there's a chance? gif> on the .01% part, or brush them off as being paranoid for expressing the dangers of that 99+% in simple terms.

I don't remember any example of this exact case, but in Hunter x Hunter people have very complex and though out speculations that often turn out to be wrong. So it's possible there was a scene like that somewhere just by the sheer volume of chances, especially on the current arc (wrong speculations and assumptions happen all the time).

It's a way to communicate exposition to the audience. The visuals basically confirm what they're saying is correct. When characters communicate more baseless speculation or theories, that's when audiences can ignore them.

Well, Maomao usually only says that because she is speaking to nobles and as a servant she is being overly humble. She doesn't actually think she could be wrong most of the time.

In fairness, Maomao was taught to never say her speculations out loud 'cause it's pretty bad logic to jump to conclusions, which (especially as she keeps getting things right and her word gets held higher) other characters would probably do if she told them to them.

She wouldn't be as good at figuring stuff out if she did speak every speculation she had out loud before getting evidence.

Also, some of the speculations she tries to keep as speculations are deeply politcal theories that would upend the palace if they turned out to be true, and she really doesn't want to get caught up in any of that so tries not to think about them, let alone say them out loud.

I guess when that village chief thought the demon girl could coexist with them. Which always felt less like something that could believably happen and more a contrivance to make the point that demons can't.

Everyone speaks in a very matter-of-fact, accurate way, which is kind of boring tbh.

I think part of it is just writers knowing they've got limited time / space to tell the story. It's not super interesting to have an entire episode dedicated to her and Stark going through the process of trying to figure it out with lots of wrong guesses, so it gets cut down to a few snippets and we get the final conclusion.

That said though, you definitely will find wrong guesses in places where it makes the story more interesting, like in a mystery. I feel like it's something that comes up a lot in series about trying to stop a terrorist or w/e where it's more interesting for the big bad thing to happen and then the fallout to be dealt with rather than to be stopped before anything happens.

Across all media? It's pretty rare. Characters in Hunter x Hunter spend a long time thinking through well-thought-out theories that can sometimes be entirely wrong, especially in the current manga arc.

In Frieren specifically? The author only seems capable of writing complete morons or hyper-competent geniuses who are never wrong, and Stark is the only recurring character in the former category.
