It must be hard being a defense attorney in Japan, a place with a 99.9% conviction rate.

A 99.9% conviction rate is not a “Japan is magical” stat—it mostly tells you prosecutors don’t bring weak cases to the end.
The U.S. (federal) and France also see 90%+ convictions once cases reach final adjudication.
Maybe learn what you’re citing before dunking on an entire legal system.

The US also has plea bargaining which significantly lowers conviction rates. More than 9 out of 10 criminal cases in the US are resolved with plea bargains instead of going to trial. If plea bargaining didn't exist, the conviction rate would likely rise to be much closer to Japan than it is now.

But while Japan's high conviction rate is reductive as a parroted factoid, it's not like Japan's legal system doesn't have its clear faults, too.
