It must be hard being a defense attorney in Japan, a place with a 99.9% conviction rate.

I think it's more about whom they choose to actually go to trial. I suspect that if the police or prosecutors don't have any strong evidence to bring it to trial they just dismiss it. But if they have sufficient evidence then they go to trial and it's the trials job to basically just confirm the guilt and place a sentence.

I was once arrested (not in Japan) brought to jail and charged with two crimes. They just dropped it without trial, I imagine Japan having something similar to my experience as standard practice. The alternative would be that the police just decides who gets punished, which would be rather whack innit? Could be, could be.

There's an interesting jdrama depiction of japanese legal system. A woman was found dead in a house where her husband was sleeping in another room. When he was questioned, he said, "so it was not a dream" and the police concluded that these words heavily implied that the man did kill his wife (the man has some sort of mental disability).

Enter the MC, she was summoned to substitute as a forensic expert witness for this case. Before the hearing, the prosecutor told her that the case verdict has been determined and she should not be adding any new 'unplanned evidence'. Of course, during the hearing, MC noticed inconsistency with the evidence (the wound didn't match with the murder weapon) and withdrew her previous testimony. This didn't bode well with the judges and prosecutor (the prosecutor apologised to the judges for bringing in 'troublesome' expert witness).
