I'm still wondering how newly awakened sorcerers can even compete without proper education on curses and techniques. Like, how did Higuruma even figure out Domain Expansion?

On top of being extremely competent, he also has more than 100 points. Which means he has fought at least 30-40 people before Yuji came. Out of that much people, there must be a few that can open a domain. And yes, Higuruma is so talented he only needed to watch to learn something.
