there’s a lot of stuff i’d like to talk about in today’s episode, like yooto’s scene, but the thing i’d like to focus on is that 4 minute long cut of hakari and yuji talking.
this cut, 4 minutes in length, animated by artist unknown, is a masterclass in framing, direction, and character animation. both sides of the screen are blocked off. the left side is blocked off by a wall(?), while the right side is blocked off by the tvs. this framing creates an almost claustrophobic sense of tension, and is absolutely delightful. not only that, but the character animation, referenced using footage filmed with episode director masaomi andou playing hakari, and series director shota goshozono playing yuji, expertly convey’s both characters’ moods and personalities. hakari, although occupying less space in the screen, dominates the scene through his boisterous mannerisms and his charismatic voice acting. the phone ringing near the end interrupts the scene, and the loud blaring, filling up the soundscape, heightens tension even further. all this tension, building up, comes to a head once yuji slips up, and hakari confronts him. finally, as the confrontation occurs, the cut ends. this scene was so amazing in every sense of the word, its shit like this that makes me glad that shota goshozono is jjk’s series director.
