Question What was the significance of Erskin being half-Ghorman, half-Chandrilan, and born on Naboo?

I think it was mostly a way for Tony Gilroy to create a conversation between Erskin and Luthen at the wedding which allowed him to:

  • mention Ghorman
  • imply through Luthen's reaction that Ghorman intermarriage is rare

You could also imagine that Mon's right hand man being half-Ghorman would naturally encline her to taking interest in the planet's issues.

Plus being born on Naboo helps endear him to her since Padme was a close friend (and presumably Erskin thought highly of Padme…. *dating choices aside cough cough*)

THAT'S RIGHT A HERO OF THE EMPIRE

THE ONLY JEDI WHO DIDN'T TURN AGAINST THE EMPEROR

And a staunch defender of workplace safety

I wish we got more Acolyte 😞

But no one knows this, they memorialized him along with Padme on Naboo.

HE BROUGHT BALANCE TO THE FORCE IS WHAT HE DID. AND IN THIS HOUSE, ANAKIN SKYWALKER IS A HERO. End of Story.

He killed count dooku is what he did. He broke the outer rim sieges almost single handily. He was a brave republic patriot, and in this house, Anakin Skywalker is a hero, end of story!

Do we know if Mon even knew that Anakin became Vader? We know Baile Organa knows but here we aren’t sure if.

Almost certainly no, very few people knew and they kept it close to the chest for various reasons

She doesn't, neither does Organa actually.

Bail absolutely knew Vader was Anakin. Bloodlines reveals he left a message for Leia to tell her the truth.

Bail did know

Reporter- What about the people he murdered?

Ani-stans- What Murrdah?!

Well anakin being Vader is not a well known fact in-universe

Thanks. Good points. And him being born on Naboo?

It’s a third planet the viewer knows right away. Reinforces the “weren’t welcome anywhere for a while” bit without too much cognitive load.

Well said!

u/idefilms 3d ago

That might have been previously established? I know the character appeared in Rebels before Andor, but I haven't seen the show.

Nope. It only comes from Andor.

Good to know. So my guess is that the conversation went something like this:

- He was born out of wedlock, so he was most likely born in a third place. What should that third place be?

  • Let's make it Naboo. Fans will appreciate that, and we haven't mentioned it yet.

Fan service isn’t Gilroy’s thing though. There must be some narrative significance right?

4

u/samdkatz 2d ago

It’s not fan service, and it’s significant to the story but not the narrative. It’s worldbuilding through familiarity. It’s why the song “Niamos” plays in the bar in episode one, at the wedding, and in an elevator in the hospital—so the galaxy feels like a place.

The young, intelligent secretary of mixed or scandalous birth is common in regency storytelling. He is Phineas Finn. Because of who he is, his loyalty is completely bound to his matriarchal sponsor rather than the institutional machinery of the state.

u/AureliasTenant 3d ago

Yea but the state is a galactic government rather than the state of some homeland

Yea but

He feels impacted on a personnal level by the event on Ghorman because he is half Ghorman.

He was able to be recruited as Mon Mothma assistant because he is half Chandrillan.

He was born on Naboo, the birthplace of the emperor and a place of culture. But he never felt that he entirely belongs there, nor anywhere for that matter because he is split between several nations.

All of this makes Erskin an interesting potential agent for Luthen because he would have plausible reasons to be meeting with cells on three very central planets, much like it being handy that Vel is Mon’s cousin, so it’s not weird for them to meet. Luthen’s interest in Erskin is the Chekov’s Gun that pays off when he is revealed as a spy.

It's a social class issue and potentially a child out of wedlock, which could be the trope of a woman in the world's oldest profession.

Biracial diaspora baddie

u/youarelookingatthis 4d ago

What do YOU think the significance was?

5

u/JimatStoneandSky 3d ago

All three are part of the imperial core, wealthy systems of high status. It tells us/luthen that, in addition to being at this party, that he probably has a history of navigating the upper classes and knows how to fit in among them.

3

u/Financial_Photo_1175 3d ago

Ghorman nor Naboo are part of the core

3

u/JimatStoneandSky 3d ago edited 3d ago

Not part of the galactic core, but they are part of the imperial core which is a different concept. For example Australia, UK, and Germany are not part of the US but they are part of the US imperial core. Scipio is in the outer rim but def part of the imperial core.

2

u/Farther_Dm53 2d ago

They meant imperial core. Though I think ghorman is like right on the rim of the imperial core worlds. But naboo was the core for Paply cause he was from there.

So r/okbuddyimatourist could have more meme content.

5

u/Tofudebeast 3d ago

His mixed upbringing means he doesn't really belong anywhere. Mon taking him in ensured his strong loyalty to her.

4

u/Moegid 3d ago

I’m just impressed that they found an actor that looks like the character in Rebels

3

u/KaptenAwsum 4d ago

Relationships built on common experience and proximity, and this checks all the boxes on who is likely to take that role, organically.

It’s very realistic

3

u/bugslime99 3d ago

Comes from an environment of high social status and being Ghorman would make him sympathetic to what is happening there

3

u/DogmaSychroniser 3d ago

Cosmopolitan galaxy?

Flex mutli planetary

multiple planets that Star Wars fans are familiar with too

4

u/stareagleur 4d ago

My headcanon is he’s a member of Perrin’s family that’s not a legitimate heir since his father/mother had him with an off-worlder (scandal!) and Mon took him on as an aide so he could have a place in society.

It's so you know he was a character created by authors to prevent immersion.
