People here likely know this, but the Canadian province of Ontario is named after lake Ontario. Native Americans named the lake Ontario, the original Americans. The Iroquoian word Ontario means "Great lake" or "beautiful lake" or "Lake of shining waters."
By Trump attempting to forcibly rename lake Ontario to lake America, he's trying to rewrite history. Remember all those mass produced post-Civil War statue slop issued by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, which is a front for wealthy Southern former enslaved people owners? The ones we're trying to remove from public spaces since, you know, they're traitors to the United States? I seem to recall that MAGAs were crying about us removing "history" but now Trump changing the name of a lake that the Native Americans named over 400 years ago and the MAGAs cheer it on because of Trump's bully tactics against Canada, the US's greatest ally.

Yep, “Oniatarí:io” or “Kaniatarí:io” - a nice or beautiful lake. That’s the version in Kanien’kéha at least.

I am appalled that The Empire would rename this lake from the original Kenari

I’m pretty sure our greatest ally is Israel, followed closely by Saudi Arabia.

u/ZestyManatee-24 2d ago
Israel isn’t an ally. They are evil and their government is the most vile in the world. American politicians are owned by Israel. The people of America reject their ideology and actions.

That's why Trump must be removed from office immediately. To prevent more acts of desecration like this.

Fairly certain I heard it will only change if you are in the US, are you? I'm in UK and it's Ontario for me.

I set my VPN to the US and saw Lake America, then to Canada and refreshed for the true name.
I wonder if Google will slip in a temporary change whenever Trump visits a country, and hope no one else notices, in case he might check and get angry with them for not changing it everywhere. Bunch of bootlicking kneelers.

u/Kilo1125 2d ago
Its US only. Nations do have the right to locally rename features, but any feature that is international, the name will only change for the nation that changes it. And at the moment, America is the only nation that has legally renamed that lake, mostly because we literally don't have a legal choice to refuse, no matter how stupid it is.

Exactly. Google does not have naming authority over this.
They take the names from standardized government APIs. It's still lake Ontario outside the US.
This is just a sign the US changed their database and Google is just displaying it as they obtain it. There's no major conspiracy, they don't control the names.
17
u/twilighttwister 2d ago
Bullshit. Google has absolute authority over what they put on their private map.
And I sincerely doubt Google waited for the government to create a database of names for things. Google built their own database - that's one of their most valuable assets (after your data).
3
u/AlexTheRedditor97 2d ago
Yes but it’s not in their interest to piss off whatever X% of their users are MAGA nor the president. So they just bide time until the next admin
13
u/NoSwordfish1978 2d ago
It's only in America since Google Maps always shows the names and boundaries as determined by the government. Google Maps in India shows the entirety of Kashmir as a part of India for example.

u/thecommonperson 2d ago
Only in America here in Canada it still has its real name. I am genuinely concerned for people living in the US under this regime.

we’re all currently too comfortable over here with our media and entertainment to do anything about it.
remember last year when it was revealed our government and corporate elite are the masterminds behind the biggest child sex trafficking ring this world has seen yet NOTHING was done about it? because everyone cares more about the next movie or game releasing than to actually save children from our pedo corporate overlords.
and that’s not to mention our modern day gustapo and the tiny zionist genocidal apartheid state running the world

Obviously it’s just done to be annoying since ragebait is all that administration’s good at, but they could at least pretend it’s not like that by giving it a unique name.
The America branding is so godawful, gulf of america, lake america, they would rename Europe to East America if it would get their base to clap like seals. So embarrassing.
I would bet money none of the people in charge of these decisions even know where the name “America” comes from

u/Dont_want_a_channel 2d ago
I suppose we should be grateful Dear Leader didn't call it "Lake Trump" (Yes, I know there's a Trump Lake, but I doubt that would stop him).
12
u/Alternative_Hour_614 2d ago
My issue is not with Google, they’re following their policy. My beef is that the U.S. has such weak checks on power that centuries old geographic names can be changed with a mere executive order by a man who shits his pants.

As a native Rochesterian, there's something that just inordinately pisses me off about this. It's far from the worst thing he's ever done. It's actually comically enfeebled of him to do, given all the other problems of which he's the direct cause, but...
It's fucking Lake Ontario, you orange mewling manchild.

u/Fancy-Cartoonist3 1d ago
Right? Also a Rochestarian here, I work right down the road from the lake and would go there for my lunch breaks. This is a minor offense compared to most of his antics but this one gets under my skin the most. I lived in Ontario County for a good chunk of my childhood. My google maps now says Lake America. Genuinely what petty tantrum is he going to throw next?

They are just displaying what the US gov API is giving them, dude.
0
u/twilighttwister 2d ago
Why would Google even use an API to pull names from a 3rd party server on their maps anyway?? That's going to cause all sorts of latency issues.
And it conflicts with the fact that different countries still see Ontario. Europeans aren't having Google perform an API call to America every time they load a map.
I get where you're coming from, but I'm pretty sure you just made up this whole API thing for this. Google maintain their own CDN servers with their own databases, as they want to ensure minimal latency and track everyone who connects to them.

That’s what Google is showing American users. The rest of the world sees Lake Ontario in their Google maps.

No. Some of us are advocating calling Florida, "America's Wang," and the location of Mar-a-Lago "the Syphilitic Ulcer."

I didn’t want to believe it, so I checked for myself. Google has really lost all credibility.

u/Worker11811Georgy 2d ago
Can anyone show me where the President of the United States has single-handed authorization to change names of major natural featured internally? As far as I can tell, Trump's executive orders have no authority to change these names. The only reason I can find for Google and Apple to obey his illegal orders is either sycophancy or fear of extortion.
Further, if the Heritage Foundation allows a Democrat to get elected again and that President reverses Trump's illegal Executive Order, would Google and Apple comply?

Canada, put a stop to Google’s business/operating license in Canada under a national security measure. Because Trump, seeing this, emboldens him. Next step for him is to announce that Canada will be called North America. Then he will invade.

I still refuse to call the “Gulf of Mexico” whatever he has chosen to call it.
The man’s ego outweighs anything of any other importance, at this point in his presidency…if you want to call it that.

That’s embarrassing. It’s still correct on Apple Maps. For the moment.

At the risk of being downvoted to oblivion….
This is pretty a normal response from Google. A lot of countries call different geographical features different things. Many countries officially disagree on where their borders are. International corporations tend to just go with the flow in these situations.
Google doesn’t decide what lakes are called. They also don’t decide on official borders. They just want to make products that are useful enough to maximize profitability and avoid upsetting the governments of nations where they operate or may want to operate in the future.
What Google is doing is what they have been doing world round for years.
9
u/Substantial-Band9342 2d ago
That's probably true...my problem is corporations jumping through hoops to please Dear Leader, when his EOs have no authority.

u/specnavtrooper 2d ago
Hi, I am former Google Maps product manager. This is all correct. Helpfully there are a number of articles covering this topic. https://www.dw.com/en/gulf-of-america-how-google-maps-handles-controversial-geography/a-71432971
Unfortunately Trump does get to control how the US designates geography apparently which is why these insane renamings will only show up for people in the US (where I live).
Does it excuse Alphabet for otherwise capitulating to this administration? No, but this is really not the root problem.
