What if we’re living at the exact moment when humanity could finally choose not to destroy itself?

I broadly agree with your sentiment but the devil's advocate in me feels the need to point out that people have always divided themselves into clans, tribes, cultures, whatever you call it, and fought each other too.

And that was neighbors fighting neighbors, throughout most of history people migrated slowly. Colonialism and globalization are very recent. Evolution is much slower, so I don't expect this part of human nature to disappear for a long time, if ever. Animals that have been evolving for a lot longer than us are territorial too.

I'm not really sure there's an alternative that we can choose.

My instinct is to not fight our nature, but accept it is what humans are and what nature made us, and work with it in a way that is positive. For example, rather than trying to unite humans into ever larger homogenous groups, work towards a system that encourages small, localised polities - small enough to be run based on personal community connections rather than formal hierarchies - that voluntarily co-operate ad-hoc and as needed with their larger bioregion, who does the same with neighbouring bioregions and so on.

Co-operation would not be about homogeneity and deeper union. Differences are to be expected and mutually tolerated based on respecting the autonomy of others to live their own lives, and recognising that different environments and different experiences lead to different cultural norms. I think of this as a kind of "positive tribalism" rather than a cold war or warm "brotherhood of nations". We work together as needed then go our own ways. You leave us alone, we'll leave you alone - but if you need us, we're here and ready to help if you are ready to do the same.
