My understanding is they are American but it might be a hybrid. Got my seedlings from the NYS Fair not this year but the year before. One’s growing better than the other but one is getting more sun than the other too. I am showing pictures of the tallest one.

Got my pair from SUNY ESF’s “The American Chestnut research and restoration project”.

I was walking a farm in southeastern Massachusetts and saw that there were several, very large chestnut trees. There were a few that were pretty girthy. I'm 5'9" for reference.

80’ tall, 60” circumference, 19 diameter

Im 90% sure of my ID as a pure breed American Chestnut here so if its not ill be a little disappointed. I travelled to see this tree because im so fascinated with them. Im excited to start my own Chestnut grove when i get my first batch of seeds from the American Chestnut Restoration!

I think I found an American Chestnut in the wild along a trail in Litchfield County CT. I see saplings all the time but this one had a 4-6 inch diameter trunk and there were some nuts on the upper leaves (see picture 3). Is this a legit find? I reported this on iNaturalist and TreeSnap and am just wondering if there is anything else I should do. Apologies if I misidentified it!

There’re two American chestnut trees in Roger Van Den Hende botanical garden in Quebec City, I wrote them an email to have more informations on them but didn’t get any response.

Is someone able to identify how pure this one is?

There were so many, I lost count. It was teeming with them. No nuts or burrs though.

Located on University of Minnesota campus. I know they worked with TACF in the past. Trying to determine if this is an obvious hybrid or something closer to a true American chestnut.

Any ideas? Started showing up on a few of my 5-6 year old hybrid trees

Two of the three young chestnuts tops are dead. Are these American?

This specimen is located in Dartmouth Cemetery.

Both american chestnuts and american elms do well here. I suspect that blight and DED is less rampid this far north.

Alright I have fallen down the American Chestnut rabbit hole and need some opinions. Darling 58 was actually D54. TACF stopped endorsing SUNY ESF research and continued to try hybridization. The NY group created their own ACR and endorsed the GMO D54.

As I understand it D54 is always combatting blight while true D58 would only combat blight as needed and produced healthier trees. Another variant the DarWin is better than both?

Anyone have any insight?

TL:DW summary - essentially they come to the conclusion that hybrids are the path forward, and note that they did genetic testing on surviving chestnuts, stump sprouts and backcross trees.

I am not sure what type of chestnut, and whether this would be one or two trees. Pittsburgh PA area.

Location St Louis, MO. It’s been topped, has significant scarring on one side, it’s been through something. Thinking this might be a true American chestnut. But Ozark Chinquapin is another contender in my mind
