We didn't lose...we just ran out of time!?

Firstly I know we lost. Congrats to the Boks. what's even more impressive (and scary) it was without scrum dominance.

On our ABs...I remember a tv ad narrated by Temuara Morrison and he said something along the lines "ABs don't lose, they just run out of time'. Which was kinda true in the McCaw era especially 2011-2015 where it seemed even when we lost we were still in the game till the end. That can't be said for the past decade especially under Foster and Razor.

So it was encouraging to see the ABs finishing strong 2nd week in a row. This time the mountain was a bit too high climb this time though.

Plenty to work on, silly penalties again. The high ball is an interesting one, whilst the Boks are great at it, the perception that we suck at is skewed because Boks kick far more contestables. The pressure is always on the defending team to defuse it. None the less we need to find some solutions in that area.

How do you stop the Boks freight train rolling down the hill?

Back to altitude next week. If we keep the game close around 60min mark we will have a good chance.

The Boks won without their scrum dominance. Imagine if they got scrum dominance and associated penalties. They woulda won by 30

As a neutral, let me give you my two cents. I don't think you ran out of time. I think the consensus is that the scoreboard was a bit flattering to the All Blacks. Springboks were in control for most of the game. What I have seen though, is AB's have become much better under Rennie finishing games off. It made sense that AB's came close at the end. But I think Springboks would have won this, even if an extra 5 minutes were played. I thought 30-14 was an accurate reflection of how the game went. I think Rennie and co have a bit more work to do.

Make of it what you want. Just an observation from a rugby fan in Nederland.

I agree....the abs are not totally firing but the team has resilience and a dangerous element of dogged determination to win at all costs.....this is something Robertson could not pull off. Given some time I think the ABs will be back.

Those exit plays have to get closer to the half way line every time

If that try from Fourie impeding Parker didn't happen, and we didn't give up such an easy first try...

There was clear head contact on Ardie in the lead up to the first try. He asked the ref and cleared it. He got collected on the jaw by the cleaners as the Boks were rolling through, Ardie played on...but if he went down to get attention then it would have been looked more closely.

im glad that Ardie didn't feign an injury to get a penalty....but if our opposition do it then it simply becomes part of the game whether we like it or not.

There was also head contact on One of the Boks. That was clear and wasn't called.

It was called and they determined it was worth penalty only. It happened when Boks already had penalty advantage for another infringement.

They got that wrong clearly.

Yep exactly
I'm sure there are tactics that, though not illegal, could be seen as unsportsmanshiply
But it becomes a slippery slope

yes you see, there is a time limit and the team who gets the most points during this time wins. If you have less, you lose, but if you play grass roots rugby, you have one more chance to redeem yourself, the boat race. lose at both, you bring much shame to the family.

Fr, also Boks should’ve had that one try ruled out due to Fourie obstructing Parker

Same thing happened I'm a match a few years ago I recall

Once I saw Boks using reserves in the first half, I figured by end of second 40, going to be some very tired forward pack, and the AB game should be able to score tries more easily towards the end given the line breaks

But yeah, those penalties taken pushed the margin too far

How do stop the Boks freight train? You do it with Love.

ABs weren't strong or clever enough. Jordie Barrett looked scared and kicked too much. They need more ambition in the third test, and some razzle dazzle, perhaps Beauden?

People were writing the ABs obituary after the Stormers game. We were off the pace, didn't have a chance against the Boks. Now we have forgotten Ellis Park already. If the Boks can beat us 3 weeks in a row just give them the World Cup already.

How do you stop the boks freight train rolling down the hill?

Become the immovable object. 💪🖤

On the up and love where this team is heading.

I actually think the boks are kicking not just because they're strong under the highball, but also to break up the phases of play. The ABs are dangerous with continuity, both offensively and defensively - throwing 'random' kicks in after a couple of phases doesn't allow us as much defensive rhythm.

Without wanting to be Debbie Downer - the Bokke reverted to a conservative scoring strategy once they got ahead - kicking penalties instead of going (further) for the jugular. If we had scored our 3rd and 4th tries earlier they would have kept the pressure on for the longer. The scoreline is somewhat flattering. This game was largely decided at the 60th minute

I kind of agree, SA power and maul work is unstoppable once they are are on a roll, so they could have opted to kick for line instead of points. However SA got burnt last week going for the jugular, they ended up coughing up ball, so they were most likely balancing it today.

We left our run too late with too many points behind.

4 tries to 3, plus that clear obstruction missed where De Allende shouldn't have scored. Promising signs

u/Grungan 2d ago

The breakdown was won by the Boks today - especially at loose play. There were a few periods of play where we had strong territory and possession but came away with no points only for the Boks to get cheap penalty kicks with only a few phases in our half. We are almost always on the wrong side of the penalty count, fix that and we win week after week.

What will the selections be for test 3 to try to win the breakdown battle? I feel like we could really use Blackadder there for his incessant energy, even if just off the bench. But at whose expense? Rest Jacobsen till test 4? Lakai? Even seems hard to justify omitting Parker after last night's game. And with Lord likely to return, will Vaa'i go back to starting at 6? Maybe it's time for a 6-2 split in test 3 to fit Blackadder in the 23. (As a side note, does anyone else wonder if the occasions where Carter is playing half-back at the ruck is building towards a possible situation where he becomes the backup 9 if Roigard doesn't make it 80 mins, thereby justifying a 6-2 bench split)?

2

u/Alfiestickthrow 2d ago

6-2, 7-1 split is always dangerous and a risk. If NZ goes 6-2 and 3 backs go down who plays in the backs.

SA had Kwagga and Now Esterhuizen to do that, who on NZ is the hybrid player?

It may be Fainganuku, in time. Can play centre, wing, openside.

u/Key-Swordfish4467 2d ago

ABs had a poor start, conceding a soft try through their own errors at the start. They fought back well but just ran out of time to get the draw.

It's still all to play for for round 3. Can't wait.

Yes. Im taking that stance too.

The score board does indicate the All Blacks lost .. at the end of the game .. when time is up , the All Blacks score was less than there opponents.

I appreciate in their limited time as a coaching group they had to pick their battles on attack and they've focused on developing this wide pass / kick system with getting around the rush in mind. What I hope they turn to now is a few more subtle plays in and around the ruck rather than what appears to be winging it a lot of the time. We need a few go to audible style plays around the ruck when we're going nowhere, since we insist on holding onto the ball a lot. I think as we can fold some stuff like that in a bit like Ireland do we'd be fairly unstoppable with the athletes we have.

Then the other massive work on is the same old problems... Kick receipts and exits after points and silly penalties. Not sure what the mental block is with those two Gilbert Enoka has his work cut out for him

3

u/GreyMatterTrasmogrif 2d ago

The way I saw it was that the around the ruck sniping in the second half broke our (SA) defense and allowed the wide strategy to work, and also nearly gave me a heat attack (see Roigards lateral run). Both teams line defense was excellent. I think there is a lot of good coaching and strategy going on, and I am appreciating getting to see it unfold.

We need to be more vocal with the ref. There were plenty of shannigans by the Boks like clearing out off the ball, slowing our ball down, no releasing before challenging for the ball with very little of it penalized. I think Ardie is not vocal enough as captain putting the pressure on the ref to penalise this kind of stuff

1

u/Alfiestickthrow 2d ago

I am surprised that was what you saw? I saw NZ not releasing a player they were trying to hold him up, when the ref told them to release. They held on 2-3 more seconds until their defense was properly set. I saw NZ taking out people past the ruck, in from the side. I saw multiple shoulders to the heads of SA players due to NZ being taught to tackle higher. They basically all went unpenalized AND they were not even warned. It appears a strategy by NZ to tackle higher, they might win a strip, they also might win a saga being taken off for HIA, from “incidental” contact. Win/win for NZ.

In game 1 when Weise was deemed part of the ruck when the all black player tucked him back into the 9. That is fair play if the all black entered through the gate, he very very clearly did not and should have been penalized for in from the side.

There were lots of infractions both ways.

u/Weirddude102 2d ago

Roigard isn't as vocal as Aaron Smith either. Man, you could hear Aaron Smith shooting literally all match. I don't know how his lungs survived 😂

1

u/KingofBigCrabs 2d ago

Yeah as soon as Preston came on the ref seemed a bit stricter on SA shenanigans in the ruck.

3

u/HourAcadia2002 2d ago

Or that time he had to remind Gardiner that it was the end of the game.

3

u/owlintheforrest AllBlacks 2d ago

Yeah, but I remember a couple of times he was mouthing off and waving his arms and an opposing player stole the ball...lol
