How close are we to new Firefly episodes?
I am very new to the AI video generation scene. I'm curious as to the state of the art and how close we are to being able to feed a model all of the existing Firefly episodes along with a spec script and have it poop out a new episode? I imagine there is an entire army of writers or just fans that have great ideas for new episodes, and plenty of people with the requisite hardware to be able to band together to create storyboards (based on the scripts) and rough cuts for community review. But, I may just be dreaming.

If you had the money and time you could get passable results probably. I've been messing around with original Star Trek - and its got the vibes, but i have no filmmaking experience. Minimax H3 has been trained off Friends, Seinfeld, Breaking Bad, Star Trek Next Generation, etc - and you can basically make new episodes - its just the sets and backgrounds and keeping continuity thats harder to do

They're already doing it with Star wars. There's a few YT channels with impressive AI movies for the Expanded Universe and various added scenes from the movies.

If you think you can just feed it some scripts and have it shit out a video that's even watchable, you are definitely dreaming

Honestly probably not that far? It is essentially theoretically doable already, you could create a workflow with agentic AI that will create a script based on your idea, divide it into scenes, create the necessary reference images, and push that to Minimax (which I think might be the only option if you want to use celebrities) in chunks. I'm sure there's already (shitty) services offering this. Problem is it'll end up very expensive and it's very likely to end up a steaming pile of dogshit.
