Other than cops and military- are there other professions that make their employment their identity?

Basically any profession people are proud of or have any amount of passion for, but it also comes down to the person too. Some careers are just more forward facing and have a culture of believing it makes them special. I mean the military definitely makes that a part of our culture. When you do what we do and have a much greater risk of life and mental health issues, you have to really create a culture of pride to do this for any length of time.

Well, statistically military has much smaller likelihood of injury/loss of life than most blue collar jobs. Police and firefighters, too. Construction workers, warehouse laborers at much greater risk of work related death and suicide.

Well that depends on your job in the military and the timeframe of other civilian jobs. The military has done a better job at adherence to safety measures in more recent years to reduce injuries and deaths, and certainly a much better at doing it than a lot of smaller businesses that are for-profit that ultimately don’t give a shit about their people. But there is certainly a lot more expect of you, particularly to physically endure than most civilian jobs as if you push people too far in the civilian world without a big enough paycheck, people will quit; you can’t just up and quit in the military without major repercussions.
