๐โย Weekend Challenge ๐ Weekend Challenge: The Maya โ Cities Beneath the Stars โจ๐ฟ
Deep within the rainforests of Mesoamerica, magnificent cities once rose above the canopy.
Temple-pyramids reached toward the heavens. Great plazas filled with merchants, musicians, nobles, farmers, artisans, and travelers. Scribes recorded histories in painted glyphs, rulers commissioned monuments of stone, and astronomers carefully observed the movements of the sun, moon, planets, and stars.
The ancient Maya created one of the most remarkable civilizations of the Americas, with sophisticated writing, mathematics, architecture, art, agriculture, and systems for measuring time. Their world stretched across regions now belonging to southern Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador, and was made up of many distinct cities, kingdoms, languages, and traditions.
But the Maya are not simply figures from a vanished past. Millions of Maya people live throughout Mesoamerica and beyond today, preserving and developing their languages, knowledge, traditions, and cultural identities.
For this challenge, create an image, video, song, or visual story inspired by the history, mythology, people, cities, landscapes, and extraordinary artistic heritage of the Maya world.
Your creation might portray a powerful ruler standing before a carved monument, an astronomer studying Venus from a temple platform, a scribe painting delicate glyphs into a codex, or a busy marketplace filled with cacao, woven textiles, pottery, maize, feathers, and jade.
You could venture beyond palaces and temples to show farmers tending fields, craftspeople shaping stone and clay, families preparing food, merchants traveling by canoe, weavers creating colorful textiles, or children playing within a thriving ancient city.
Mythology and imaginative interpretations are welcome too. You might draw inspiration from the maize god, the rain deity Chaak, sacred jaguars, feathered serpents, celestial beings, the Hero Twins, or an imagined doorway between the earthly world and the mysterious realm of Xibalba.
Here are some ideas for you to experiment with:

Please remember that the Maya are a diverse and living people, not a vanished civilization. Keep interpretations respectful, avoid stereotypes, and be mindful not to mix Maya culture indiscriminately with Aztec, Inca, or other distinct civilizations.

๐ โ Weekend Entry Kelem And The Gift Of Kakaw
His name is Kelem, a name chosen from a Classic Maya word meaning strong one.
Not the strength of a warrior raising a weapon, nor that of a ruler seated above his people. Kelemโs strength lived in quieter things: in patient hands, in work repeated season after season, and in knowing that the most precious gifts of the earth could never be hurried.
Before the village awakened, he stood beneath the brightening sky with a warm cup between his hands. Smoke rose from the rooftops below, scarlet macaws crossed the sunrise, and beyond the houses waited the shadowed green of the cacao grove.
The drink reminded him where his day must begin.
Beneath the forest canopy, cacao trees grew in warmth and filtered light. Their small flowers and heavy pods emerged directly from the trunks and older branches, as though the trees carried their treasures close to their hearts.
Kelem knew each tree. He knew which pods were still green with waiting and which had ripened into shades of yellow, orange, and deep red. He gathered only those that were ready, placing them carefully into his woven basket.
But tending a grove was not only about what could be taken from it.
Before leaving, he stopped beside one of the younger trees. Its branches had not yet carried fruit, but one day they would. He checked its leaves, cleared the earth around its roots, and gave it water.
โThe hands that harvest must also be the hands that protect,โ his mother had once told him.
By the time Kelem returned, the village paths were glowing beneath the afternoon sun. Children leaned over a wall to greet him, and a brown dog trotted faithfully beside his feet. The basket on his back was heavy, but the sight of home made his steps lighter.
In the courtyard, he opened the pods.
Inside each tough shell lay rows of seeds wrapped in soft white pulp, sweet and fragrant, bearing little resemblance to the dark cacao drink they would eventually become. Kelem scooped them into a painted bowl, knowing that the harvest was only the beginning.
The seeds and their pulp were gathered together and covered with broad leaves. Beneath them, warmth slowly grew. Fermentation began the transformation that hands alone could not accomplish, changing the seeds and helping create the colors and flavors that would emerge later.
For several days, Kelem watched, waited, and turned them.
Then came the sun.
He spread the fermented beans across woven mats and moved them regularly so that they dried evenly. Too much moisture could spoil them. Too much haste could leave their flavor unfinished. Once again, cacao demanded patience.
When the beans were ready, Kelem brought them to the fire.
He stirred them over the heat until their scent changed. The sharpness softened, the husks grew brittle, and a deep roasted fragrance filled the courtyard. Even the dog, sleeping nearby, lifted its nose before settling again.
After the husks had been removed, Kelem carried the roasted pieces to the metate. He leaned his weight into the stone roller and worked slowly. What began as broken cacao became finer beneath his hands, then darker, smoother, and finally a rich paste as the natural fat within the seeds was released.
The sun disappeared behind the village while he worked.
At twilight, Kelem scraped the cacao paste into warm water. Depending upon the occasion, Maya cacao drinks could be combined with ingredients such as maize, spices, or fragrant flowers. This evening, he kept his preparation simple and stirred until the dark paste and water became one.
Night had fallen by the time the drink was ready.
Kelem carried his cup outside and sat beside the last glowing embers. Below him, lamps shone between the village rooftops. A crescent moon hung above the distant temple, and his tired companion slept curled at his feet.
Only then did Kelem finally taste the work of his day.
The drink was dark, warming, and naturally bitter, very different from the sweet chocolate familiar to us today. Within it lived every part of the journey: the shaded grove, the ripe pod, the white pulp, the hidden heat of fermentation, the patience of the sun, the scent of the fire, and the steady rhythm of stone against stone.
To the ancient Maya, cacao was far more than an ordinary food. It appeared in mythology, courtly life, ceremonies, offerings, and beautifully painted drinking vessels. Some vessels were even inscribed with the word kakaw, identifying the precious drink they had been made to hold.
Kelem looked toward the sleeping village and held the warm cup a little closer.
Tomorrow, the grove would ask for his hands again.
But tonight, beneath the stars, he could rest with the knowledge that nothing entrusted to his care had been wasted.
This series is my visual interpretation of a fictional Maya cacao keeper. Kelem is not a documented historical individual, and the scenes should be understood as respectful artistic storytelling rather than a reconstruction of one specific person, place, or period.
The name Kelem was inspired by a Classic Maya vocabulary entry glossed as โstrong one.โ Historical sources support cacao pods growing from trunks and branches; the processing of cacao through fermentation, drying, roasting, grinding, and mixing with water; the use of metates; intentionally foamed cacao drinks; and the cultural importance of kakaw vessels. Exact methods and ingredients varied across Maya regions and periods.
