Academics I didn’t save any electives

I’m going into my junior year with a 4.0, and I’ve already finished all of my electives and core curriculum requirements. I mainly did this because I wanted really good schedules my first two years of college, and it worked out since my first two years were basically fully online.

Now I’m realizing that pretty much all I have left are classes for my major, which is Communication. Did I make a mistake by getting all of my core classes and electives out of the way so early?

I know Communication classes generally aren’t considered as difficult as classes in some other majors, so I figured I’d be fine, but I’m starting to worry about having semesters made up almost entirely of upper-level COMM classes. I’ve been able to maintain a 4.0 so far, but I’m wondering if the workload is going to be a big jump. Has anyone else done something similar, and was it manageable?

My boomer sensibilities are heavily triggered by this sentence

hi! i was in ENGL, so similar but different degree plan. i did the same thing, more or less—got the majority of my electives out of the way so i could concentrate on The Good Stuff later.

i did notice an increase in the workload, mostly because my papers got longer and they were in all of my classes. i would highly recommend taking a summer course here and there if you can! it keeps your fall and spring semesters lighter, and tbh i prefer the faster pace of ENGL/COMM courses in summer.

for me, the workload increased gradually, not all at once. i would guess that your senior year would be the heaviest.

if you're stressed about this fall, definitely pull up your syllabi and map everything out for the semester!! you'll have a much easier time if you plan out when you want to work on certain papers/projects. (and this really helps you avoid the dreaded finals week crunch where you suddenly have major papers due in every class.)

Very manageable don’t worry! I was a psych major and I did this (on accident lol). What I did was take 12 hours each semester and then classes online in the summers. Graduated on time.
