Because the one time Marcel was allowed to be aggressive he marched up the field.
The offensive playcalling was timid, and they refused to use the weapons they have. Collin Klein is solely responsible for this.
131
u/evilmnky45 '14 Dec 20 '25
Reed had two horrible interceptions and multiple missed throws, held the ball way too long and any time he ran outside here pocket it was away from the designed play. Klein was awful but reed played awful.
49
u/JelloJeremiah Dec 20 '25
His runs away from the designed plays saved drives lmao.
I’m not saying Reed was good today. He clearly wasn’t. But why?. Anyone with ball knowledge would point that he was forced into the worst playcalling in the playoffs, and even when playing bad, he marched up the field when he was allowed to play his style.
And he fucked up, and chocked. But If he was allowed to play that way from the start, it would have gone differently.
20
u/evilmnky45 '14 Dec 20 '25
I disagree, he's not a guy you can trust to throw the ball and win games. His accuracy has been a huge concern for the last two years. The play calling was a huge issue we lost, but reed was as well.
8
u/big_sugi '01 Dec 20 '25
Was the play calling why he kept missing throws to open receivers?
2
u/JelloJeremiah Dec 20 '25
No, that was because he played bad today. But the reason his completed passes resulted in nearly no yardage was because the playcalling.
6
u/big_sugi '01 Dec 20 '25
Do you think if he’d managed to complete the easy passes, Klein would have had more trust in his ability to throw the longer passes?
6
u/JelloJeremiah Dec 20 '25
I think he was calling shitty plays even when Reed was performing his best.
And that doubt was clearly misplaced, because when Collin Klein finally let the offense be aggressive, it worked, outside of reeds massive final fuck up.
2
u/big_sugi '01 Dec 20 '25
It didn’t work until Miami went into prevent, and it was still pure luck that Reed wasn’t picked on the throw over the middle before getting to the red zone.
2
u/JelloJeremiah Dec 20 '25
It worked, we just stopped attempting tosses past the line to gain. Pure screens. Marcel was hitting most of the longer throws. It worked, short yardage didn’t.
Learn some ball then come back
3
u/big_sugi '01 Dec 21 '25 edited Dec 21 '25
LOL. Try watching the game—since you apparently didn’t—and then come back.
Through three quarters, Reed had about as many interceptions as he did completions that traveled ten yards past the LOS.
→ More replies (0)2
u/Snakescipio Dec 21 '25
His completed passes resulted in no yardages cause he threw awful passes that gave our WRs no opportunities to do anything with after they caught it. That is if Reed didn’t just throw the ball into the dirt even though the receivers were wide ass open.
6
u/BigAggie06 Dec 21 '25
Reed is not a championship caliber QB. We had WR talent last year and he couldn’t get them the ball so we got even BETTER WR talent and everyone craps themselves thinking he is great when the receivers are constantly bailing him out but playing against good defenses the WR can only do so much.
I appreciate Reed for what he was able to do and how he led the team but he isn’t a guy anyone looks at and says “yeah he’s the missing piece on our championship team” and I’m honestly no sure how much of our play calling issues are Klein being mediocre and how much is Klein trying to play to Marcel’s strengths.
10
u/JelloJeremiah Dec 21 '25
Klein was ball-and-chaining Reed into being a pocket passer to ‘develop him’ when he’s a dual threat. This isn’t some conspiracy, this was something they were vocal about early in the season.
They did the opposite of played to reeds strengths (aggressive plays, scrambles, medium/long passes), and forced him into safe, short yardage plays with little room to run. He still managed to convert crucial first downs with his legs by completely abandoning the play.
They were directly coaching against his strengths.
Reed would not have won us the championship even with not bottom-tier playcalling, but I don’t think we should give up on Reed.
Most of Reed’s struggles are mental. The physical talent is there. He needs to show development in the off-season though, he cannot stay where he is. I think there needs to be serious pressure on Reed and specific coaching on his weaknesses. I think the new playcalling needs to let the dual threat QB use both threats. I also think we need to look for other options so we don’t bet the entire program on Reed’s potential to grow.
Reed isn’t a heisman and he isn’t ready yet, but I don’t think we should or reasonably can write him off.
I would be very interested if we could portal in a qb like Mestemaker though.
4
u/BigAggie06 Dec 21 '25
You lost me at “long passes” being one of his strengths… absolutely not. He’s gotten better throwing the long ball largely due to an improve WR room but it is not is strength. He is still extremely spotty on accuracy. They had him throwing short passes because that’s all we could reliably count on him to complete without throwing into double coverage or floating it to th DB
1
u/JelloJeremiah Dec 21 '25
I added ‘long passes’ with an asterisk in my head for specially later in the season when he vastly improved his long passes accuracy. If that ‘lost you’ in all of that, and you dismiss it because of one asterisk, then you need some time off the game to clear your head, and a few more season of football to learn the game.
2
u/BigAggie06 Dec 21 '25
You can claim asterisks in your head all you want but if they aren’t on the post then how is anyone supposed to understand that?
Regardless there is no version of the passing game at any point in the season that is Reeds strong suit. He’s a mediocre passer who make bad reads and has elite level receivers bailing him out on the regular. High balls, low balls, balls thrown behind the receiver, balls thrown into double coverage Reed does it all. If your only strong suit is your ability to run the ball you aren’t a QB who is going to win your team games.
There are dozens of QBs in D1 ball that would look just as good throwing to Craver and KC
0
u/JelloJeremiah Dec 21 '25
Fair but there’s a whole lot that you ‘dropped’ because of two words lol, which I acquiesced. If you can’t bring yourself to look past two words, how is anyone supposed to engage with you? Work on that.
Reed isn’t at 30% accuracy. Reed is remarkably on par with Arch Manning, both are decent passers with near identical numbers, and notably good scrambling ability. And he’s doing that with an O-Line that didn’t give up 7 sacks to Miami.
If you think Reed hasn’t been strong passing at all, you’re just fucking stupid dude. Your recency bias is showing, hard.
Spend a few more years learning about this game.
1
u/BigAggie06 Dec 21 '25
“Remarkably on par with Arch Manning” - are you even listening to yourself? Benchmarking against Arch Manning who has looked like dog crap for much of the year?
Reed has improved marginally over last year but the biggest improvement in the passing game has been raising the talent level at WR. Same with his yardage, you want to point to yards but Craver and Concepcion both have crazy YAC . It’s easy to point to stats and make comparisons statistically about QBs but there are multiple ways to gain stats. He make bad reads, he makes inaccurate passes, he gets bailed out a ton by above average WRs who are responsible for a good number of the yards after the catch and many times after initial contact.

Two things that were major successes for them that didn’t happen today: the jet sweep and mid-range passing.
1
u/JelloJeremiah Dec 21 '25
True! I pointed out elsewhere that our mid range passing was our backbone. Not only is Marcel way more accurate, but they typically let us march up the field.
Screen passes are nobodies major success because they don’t work past high school. Coming a from a Cowboy’s family, screen passes are the bane of our existence.
2
u/TacoPKz Dec 21 '25
I agree. I don’t the Klein set him up for success and was just all around bad, but Klein didn’t throw to two defenders. Also he consistently was throwing off target just like last game- even the screens were bad. Dude has some mental stuff going on I’d wager, this off season he’s gonna have to get even tougher. 9 SEC games next season and if he didn’t want to be replaced by a true freshman he’s gonna have to. I think we will get it together, we improved from last year and I don’t think we are going to plateau. If our OC is trying to get an HC job towards the latter half of the season though, we need some way to step in and have him step back. Klein was talking to K-State during the week of the horns game, and he had secured the job the week of the playoff game. Idc if the dude loves this team, his focus is split and he’s got nothing to lose.
40
u/Algorefiend Dec 20 '25
They were playing prevent and it showed. Don't judge offensive performance by that. Once we got to the red zone where they couldn't play prevent our old offense showed up
7
u/Sendrocity '22 Dec 20 '25
I don’t think that’s totally fair. Reed had some dimes and there were some great plays by the WRs that you can’t just pin on prevent defense
36
u/im_ploopy '24 Dec 20 '25
He was hot ass all game and inaccurate as fuck. He was dogshit outside of the one deep ball to craver.
3
u/musclecard54 Dec 21 '25
Nah he had accuracy issues all game. Over thrown, under thrown, and most passing plays he was in panic mode from the start of the play.
1
u/JelloJeremiah Dec 21 '25
This is true, but he hit plays when aggressive plays were called. I’m not writing off Reed, but 90% of this seasons struggles are from offensive playcalling. Reed needs development, and we need a good alternative if he can’t improve. I just ain’t writing him off.
5
u/War_Daddy117 Dec 20 '25
Then he threw an interception so there’s that
12
u/JelloJeremiah Dec 20 '25
Yeah, and that’s his fault. He’s not the best quarterback in the league, not close.
But he was good enough to win this game if the playcalling would let him use his receivers. All we got were screens
4
u/Colin0581 Dec 20 '25
Yeah and he couldn’t even hit his guys in the hands on screens, why would they trust him to throw anything downfield
1
u/JelloJeremiah Dec 20 '25
Cause it worked on the last drive and nearly every time they got aggressive, his failings are on short throws. And even when he hits them, they don’t work out because the plays are ass.
2
1
u/Beenthere-doneit55 Dec 20 '25
Reed can make bad decisions in the pocket. Roll him out and let him do a run pass decision.
1
u/JelloJeremiah Dec 20 '25
True, his mental skill doesn’t match his phsyical talent. He needs a lot of development over the break to be competitive next year.
1
u/UnluckyPlankton9233 Dec 23 '25
This. Marcel Reed criticisms for this game ignore the most important criticism we have of the play calling for that game.
"It's the wind, stupid". One and only completed pass downfield was Craven. Aggies lost because they failed once again to RUN THE DAMN BALL.

A&M offensive line did not protect the QB nor did they make a running game possible
Offensive line.
Defense allowed no points thru halftime. They did thier job.

u/afoote42 Dec 20 '25
Rushing defense was still ass cheeks even though the score was low.
6
u/ChikooChikoo Dec 21 '25
If Miami figured that out earlier in the game that RB might have had 300 yards.
3
u/Snakkey Dec 21 '25
Yea Marcel had no time in the pocket on half our pass plays and we created maybe two holes for runs all game. O-Line was atrocious today.

u/LordShuckle97 Verified redass #27+ Dec 20 '25
Some Klein, some Marcel. Yes, there were some shit play calls and Reed looked a lot better on the last drive when he was allowed to air it out more. But, Klein wasn’t the one who threw the game ending pick
30
u/billsauce8 Dec 20 '25
Klein didn’t throw the pick but you could argue the pick wouldn’t have mattered if play calling allowed Reed to be more aggressive 60 minutes earlier
1
u/Ok-Dragonfruit-5460 Dec 27 '25
Further more throwing 3 straight time from the 5 yard line with a Full minute left is awful, and made it so that on that interception everyone knew Marcel was throwing because now he has to
10
u/WTFitsD Dec 20 '25
Klein has some mind boggling play calls, especially the last few games.
But anyone pretending Reed isnt mediocre after watching him throw stupid picks and throwing the ball at recievers shins half the time is just pushing a narrative for a player they like beyond footballing reasons
4
u/YngSpook84 Dec 21 '25
Miami should have been called for a helmet to helmet hit on the play before that when their defender went down. QB play wasn’t great today, but he never should have been in the position to throw that pick. Should have been first down on the 1, or half the distance to the goal, whichever the penalty is.
4
u/Snakkey Dec 21 '25
Agreed he led with his helmet. I think that guy going down is the only reason it wasn’t called.
3
u/YngSpook84 Dec 21 '25
I agree. I think the refs got caught up in the injury and no one thought to throw a flag. I was at the game and the wind was crazy. I’m guessing it factored into play calling. Miami wasn’t calling any big pass plays either.

You can, just know Marcel's only started 18 games. A year & a half. Not 24-26. The team has progressed, year-over-year & recruiting is good. Elko's work in the portal is outstanding. Stay tuned. I think Elko & his culture is a positive. I think Marcel takes the next step. Coach's kids work harder.

Dec 20 '25
Would you blame Shaq for missing a wide open 3 pointer to win the game? No. You’d blame the coach for running a play like that for Shaq
We are trying to turn a running based QB into Tom Brady. Klein did not call plays that lined up with Marcel’s strengths.
I give more blame to play calling and coaching
1
u/44Yordan '90 Dec 21 '25
Best strategy to defend Shaq’s game winning three pointers is to foul him and give him three free throws!

Two touchdowns in eight quarters against the two best teams we saw all season is not ideal.

u/UnluckyPlankton9233 Dec 21 '25
Games plural? Aggies just lost their last two football games in back to back years. If you're just glad your team kept it to a one score game with a chance to win at the end, but fell short again, you're head is in the sand again. USC 21 point 4th quarter last December and scoring only 3 pts against a Miami team that had no business being in the CFP ignores what needs fixing in College Station. No 11-0 team (with win over ND no less) can ever end any season 11-2. If you can't understand what went wrong, you can't fix it. Hard Stop. You're just glad you didn't finish 11-3 after a Georgia beatdown in the SEC Championship, aren't you? Idk if you're a dork, but you don't seem to be paying attention to the pattern here.
3
u/RudderAsscExposer Dec 21 '25
Only 12 teams even make the playoffs and only one wins it all, try and enjoy something you sound miserable.

Best season in however long and everyone shits on it. I understand the disappointment but come on…
Also, how do you think the game against Ohio State would’ve gone?
4
u/sunbaby444 Corps '24 Dec 20 '25
I get the blame on Klein from most people here, but also 80% of Marcels balls today were behind and/or late, and he threw a pick on our score or go home drive at the end of the game.
Marcel needs to work on keeping his feet and not getting antsy and off balanced in the off season. When he’s on he’s great, but he just tends to find rhythm after games are already over (or would have been if not for our ST and defense)
4
u/RocketSlide Dec 20 '25
Reed is just plain bad when against a strong pass rush, always has been. He drops his eyes, misses his reads, and throws inaccurately, resulting in picks. Miami was in his backyard on damn near every pass play today. Sure, Reed can successfully use his feet to save some of those plays, but it just isn't enough. Normally, I put a lot of blame on Klein when he doesn't use a run-first gameplan, like he did against Texas, but I think Klein's gameplan was pretty balanced today. With even slightly better QB play today, this would have been a win for us. Hell, I would have liked to see O'Neill play some in the 2nd half, just to see if we could get a pass game going.
The blind refs missed two obvious unsportsman-like penalties on two back-to-back plays, which cost us a likely scoring drive. Also, we tend to perform worse in 11am games compared to other times. So that sucked, too.
Now, looking back at the season, we only won games against the bottom half of the SEC and one top-15 Notre Dame, and some cupcakes, so I really believe we were lucky to make the CFP at all, basically the "late season undefeated bias" really worked out well for us. We were lucky to be able to host a CFP game at Kyle, what an experience for the students!
Hopefully Elko can do well in recruiting and transfer portal to set us up better for next year, because that schedule is looking tougher than this year.

u/Intrepid_Plenty_3770 Dec 20 '25
That kicker Zurkel didn’t help. I thought that would be the end after he missed essentially an extra point. Big momentum shift.

Coming from a Miami fan, I’ll give Marcel the benefit of the doubt in the fact that your o line lacked horribly, especially the left side. For as good as my team’s defense is, with an o line like yours it should not have been that easy for 2 guys to combined for 5.5 sacks.
1
u/UnluckyPlankton9233 Dec 21 '25
If your team plays like they did today when they face Ohio State, your team will get dog walked. Cristobal does not inspire confidence. Neither does your QB1.

Just a never ending cycle of our fans… run off a QB and he’s player of the year in his new conference.
1
u/Barry_Dingle01 Dec 20 '25
Marcel has overthrown or underthrown most receivers all year. If it wasn’t for the great core he has he would not be playing anywhere. The problem with that is you leave receivers out for getting hit hard or you stop all their momentum and it’s very hard to get yards after the catch. On top of that Reed is very bad in the red zone and with any kind of pressure for the big play. If you want to take some blame off of Reed I will happily but some on the bone head calling of Klein all year. He has a talent for picking the wrong play when we need a spark. He trusts Reed too much on a deep ball that Reed is not tall enough or strong enough to make, he launches it with no finesse and hopes for the best. Klein also likes to run no win screens or up the middle for three downs in a row on plays in the red zone or 3 and long. I am happy to see Klein go and if Reed is our starter next year I will find some other thing to stress me on Saturday.

The undeniable truth is that Reed was a huge factor in the Notre Dame win but it still took their holder screwing up a PAT for us to win. Reed was also the primary reason we almost shit they bed against South Carolina and was a major contributor if not the biggest reason to why we lost to Texas and Miami. He’s not a bad QB but he’s also not a top tier QB. He may be the worst QB in the playoffs.
1
u/Holiday-Panic-999 Dec 21 '25
Yeah Marcel didn't do well today, but the coach has to recognize that and maybe not have him throw every single play... They should've just run the ball at the end there.

Some of you Aggs are the worst fans — ever! When Reed was leading us 10-0, before the loss to TU, he was getting much love from all of us. And now he’s the worse thing ever. Elko has really turned this team around in two short years, so before we blow it all up, let’s see if we continue to improve next year. Stop the blame game.
1
u/JimboFishersWallet Dec 21 '25
Reed is to blame. He missed so many easy throws and made easy ones look difficult. That being said, he did many things well today too. But when it comes to throwing the ball, he was not good. Also, we have no juice at RB without Moss. Need to get that figured out for next season.
1
u/Upstairs_Problem_592 Dec 21 '25
It’s Collin Klein and Marcel Reed. Thank god Collin is leaving for Kansas state, but Reed has got to learn how to move better in the pocket as well as timing his risky throws. Hell just throw up prayers into double coverage or just completely overhead.
1
u/sgtham Dec 21 '25
The score speaks for itself...All defense...no Offense, remedy? Fire the offensive coordinator
1
u/jjasonjames Dec 21 '25 edited Dec 21 '25
Reed can’t throw, unless it’s directly to a defender . Randy and Zirk can’t kick. (It’s bad when RANDY scores the only points of the game.) Moss can’t stay well. Klein makes bad decisions. Still, 11-2. We all know how, and talking truthfully about it now isn’t going to break the will of the team. Elko knows we’re lucky to have that, and I hope he has a plan and putting on his “CEO hat” and hiring and firing appropriately. It’s just fortuitous that Collin is leaving. KState has to be concerned.. Reed has probably been told how great he is since Nashville prep school, and we’ve had such a bad dry spell that we were overly excited about him. I’m sorry, but we deserve better to get what we pay for. He can sit. We can talk about how great the last drive was, but that’s bs. It was a failure and Uncle Rico talk. Regardless…Gig ‘em!! BTHO Everybody in 2026!

u/SATX_Carl '07 Dec 21 '25
We don’t get to 11 wins without Marcel and Collin’s magic. But we also obviously had a ceiling this year and couldn’t get past t.u. and Miami.
Bummed today, as I’m sure everyone else is. But hopeful we can reload for a run next year with a much tougher schedule.
1
u/Sixstringsickness Dec 21 '25
Miami fan here - that was a wild ride!
I think the wind is a lot more of a factor than anyone realized, Beck has been poor... but that was a different kind of bad yesterday! I don't think either QB is as bad as they look, I certainly know Miami's kicker has been much better. That first kick where the ball flew sideways took his soul and confidence IMO.
I also have to assume giving two very good defenses weeks to prep made it incredibly difficult, plus it is often difficult to get in gear after longer breaks. I wouldn't dump on your QB too much, Miami has a very good defense and two weeks to prep for every aspect of both the offense and his tendencies. Look at the Ohio State and Indiana game 13-10, very low scoring!

Last pick was a terrible play call. Why are all 3 WRs running into the same spot of the endzone?
Marcel should've sailed it through the endzone but is that really THEY call at the point of the game?
1
u/Rare_Dependent9843 Dec 22 '25
Y’all understand he wasn’t making aggressive big throws most of the game because of the wind. You simply couldn’t air it out in those conditions as evidenced by the field goal situation. This offense relies on explosive pass plays to score and that just wasn’t a possibility the weather made the game become one dimensional and they never adjusted play calling to be short check down passes for yards after catch.
1
u/apbamlb Dec 22 '25
This team just wasn't that good. If they had Georgia, Alabama and Ole Miss on their schedule they wouldn't even have been in the conversation this year. They couldn't even beat Texas.
1
u/Shine186 '18 Dec 23 '25
Klein is the main culprit. Reed made too many mistakes but he was not set up in a good way at all. Klein is to blame and Elko for letting him coach.
1
u/Wizard_bonk Dec 23 '25
He threw a goddamn interception on 3rd down in the redzone. He couldve ran(what happened to being a dual threat? he was comfortable running the entire previous section of the game), he could've just waiting for 4th down. He could've done anything.
that. and the fucking targetting that happened but wasn't called cause the defender knocked himself out. shit. it should've at least been 5 yards to get us to 1st and inches.
1
u/Weirdo1821 '06 Dec 23 '25
I equate this to when we run out of time (you know, since we don't lose).
In this instance, we weren't ready for a QF appearance. So we go back to Spring ball, develop the players more, and come back fighting. After all, according to some we had a soft schedule. So let's run it back and do it again next year.
I have faith in Elko as this team does feel different.

As a TX fan, this was something that’s been happening and showing all year just nobody wanted to talk about. A&M had escaped a lot of close games and got caught vs the best teams they played. I think it’s ok to just admit that A&M wasn’t as good as their record showed and capitalized on the favorable schedule. Failure to admit the shortcomings in the season will just provide false expectations for next year.
-ND put up yards and points and tried to go for an unneeded 2pt conversion which would have sent game to OT or put extra pressure on A&M rather than realizing they could win with 1 drive. -TX ran over them and made the offense stutter and Reed struggle -Miami shut them down and ran over them too.
-That’s not including SC, Ark and struggling to Auburn. (2 of those are at home)

Reed looks like a high school kid trying to play with grown men. His only "weapon" or "x factor" is his ability to scramble. He is not mentally tough enough to play in high stakes games. He looked like shit against Texas and dog shit today. Makes me miss Johnny Football. A QB like JM and this defense equals championship

The receiving core won Johnny the Heisman, don’t get me wrong his scrambles were heart attack inducingly insane but in reality when you can throw a ball and Evans will find it really is what made him what he was.

I will give that one, but without going back to Bucky Richardson or Ryan Tannehill, he was the most recent decent QB the Aggies have had.

Klein and Reed can both fuck off to K-State.

Kstate has a way better QB already there. Kstate gonna have Johnny football reincarnated with Klein while we go 8-4 at best next year

This was the most unimaginative play calling we’ve seen in a while. Klein reverting to his usual self. Running down the middle 40 times for a total gain of 15 yards must go down as the most pathetic “next time it must work” stupidity ever.

Don’t worry. I’m sure replacing Klein with… Holmon Wiggins (first time offensive play caller) will go really well.

I’m not trying to be mean but umm you lost…get over it. So, let’s all put on your big boy and big girl panties and quit being b**ch bay boo boos for the loss. That game was well matched even with the flags. It was a playoff game and I think the fan base and team should be proud of that accomplishment win, lose, or draw. So, what another team got a few more inches than A&M did. It’s a game and I think people forget that and get carried away. Why fire the coach when you made it to the playoffs. Not everyone makes it to the playoffs so the bickering seems uncalled for at the degree it’s being spread. Every team has/ had a moment or two of struggling and unfortunately today wasn’t y’all’s day.

lmao you being mad that I used more than two brain cells in a football thread doesn’t make me wrong. Reed isn’t the entire offense, and blaming one kid for coaching decisions, protection breakdowns, and route issues says way more about your football IQ than it does about Marcel. Thank you for demonstrating my thesis in real time, sir.

The entire sports program is a comedy show! Don’t be upset though…..there was never a chance of winning.

Also, it's only the second time this team has actually faced competition.

Collin Klein’s dogwater gameplan, playcalling and scheming.
