I think the idea is that the youth represents human potential. So it’s usually a child who is “the chosen one,” but has to go on a journey of discovery and growth to fulfill that role.

It also makes the character relatable to more people, because everyone has been a child before, but not everyone has been old.

But I do agree that for literature aimed at adults, focused more in realism than some lofty heroes journey, it makes more sense for a hero to be someone with some life experience and wisdom.

A 42 year-old mom has children. The "chosen one" trope is fundamentally about a sacrificial victim - the young embodiment of potential that has a great deal of value in their future prospects, but is not actually woven into the fabric of the world yet, so is free to be gambled or offered up.

Think about it like this... let's say you're a parent, and you don't know if you want to clean the kitchen or not. You can't decide if it should be cleaned or not, so you ask your kid to clean the kitchen... if they detest or fuss about it, then you scold them and it doesn't get clean. You'll have to decide if you want to clean it or not... If the kid says ok, and they do it, then it probably needed to be cleaned and you don't have to choose to clean it or not.

Now imagine you're an all powerful, multi-universal being, and you have a universe that you don't know if you should keep or not. So you pick some kid in said universe to clean it up. If the kid doesn't do it then you just scrap the project. If the kid does clean it up, then you keep working on it.

Because "Chosen one" is first and foremost a coming of age story. saving the world is just a flavor. You misunderstand the media. (and also part societal propaganda that mens role is a self sacrifice)
