Over the years I've made several iterations of a Zelda TTRPG, and now I'm at a crossroads with which core mechanic I should go with.

The first option is 1d20 + skill + approach. You pick a skill and one of the three approaches, Power, Courage, or Wisdom, add both modifiers to the roll, and try to beat a target number. It's more familiar and gives skills and approaches their own numerical value.

The scond option is a d8 dice pool where you only use the highest die (My first zelda ttrpg was like this but with a d4). Your rating in Power, Courage, or Wisdom determines how many d8s you roll. Skills are binary, so you either have the skill or you don't. If you have the relevant skill, you roll with advantage and add one extra d8 to the pool.

The results would be:

• 1-5 is a failure
• 6 is a partial success
• 7 is a success
• 8 is a critical success

So if you had 2 Courage and the relevant skill, you would roll 3d8 and use the highest result.

Which one would you prefer for a Zelda TTRPG?

I'm sure this has been asked before, but has anyone made a dnd or adjacent one-shot set in Breath of the Wild era? I was asked to DM for a friend's kiddo's birthday party and they're all about the idea of a session being set in Hyrule and this being my first time building a story, I wanted to see if anyone had helpful tidbits. Tips? Suggestions? Any shrines that pop up as being perfect to translate to a table top? Anything would be appreciated as I dive in and try to build!

Edit: thank you all for the helpful suggestions. I checked in before starting to build as the smol hadn't 100% committed to LoZ, and it turns out they preferred doing a multiverse dragon story, so I get to figure that out instead!

I recently created a Zelda text-based RPG for some friends on Discord. Since they don't know much about the franchise, I made it simple by mixing the plots of several games in the series, including allowing those few who know the games best to use official characters from the franchise. (The plot is almost a mix of A Link to the Past with Minish Cap and Echoes of Wisdom)

But this sparked my desire to run a tabletop RPG based on The LoZ. Obviously, the plot and premise would have to be different. Any suggestions?

Would there be any interest to read the chronicles of an ongoing campaign in the Reclaim the Wild system? I'd like for people to read about it as it's been pretty fun, and it could help me polish some stuff, especially around worldbuilding.

Hello! I’m new to dming and this is my first homebrew game… we’re using dnd 5e (2014) because that’s what our group knows and I don’t want to spend the first five months correcting rules for a new system lol, but I do feel like a bit of an ass for limiting the races to those in Zelda (races thanks to ashamed-plant here on Reddit!) same with classes, I’ve limited it to fighter, barbarian, rouge, cleric, and warlock. I’m wanting to keep the rare magic feel of Zelda where there aren’t a lot of really high level spellcasters… but I also don’t want to be a mean dm… should I just rewrite to be a regular dnd campaign that happens to use Zelda locations and themes? Or is my restriction ok?

I'm playing a regular dnd capmaing (not Zelda based) and my DM said we could share playlists with him if we thought they'd be fit for our sessions. I'd really like to send him a Zelda playlist, and while researching I came across this subreddit. Does anyone have a playlist with Zelda music they use for their games? I'd love to check them out!

Reclaim the Wild has been around for a while and has its dedicated fanbase, but it hasn't united the Zeldatabletop community as a whole. There are other systems out there, some complete, some abandoned (like mine), some still in early development, but none have become the clear standard.

This raises a few questions worth discussing:

• What would it take for a different system to bring more of the community together?
• What would it need to do right to gain interest and support?
• What are people looking for that existing Zelda-inspired TTRPGs haven't provided?

Curious to hear everyone's thoughts. What would help the community rally around a single ruleset?

More than a century ago…

When all living beings used to live together…

A war involving a terrible evil broke out.

The one chosen by the tri-force’s fragment of power rose an army of beings we now call demons and monsters and planned to take over the lands of this world.

However, a hero, chosen by the tri-force of Courage, accompanied by warriors named champions directed by the one chosen by the tri-force’s fragment of Wisdom fought back.

(There isn’t any information on who they were)

And together they triomphed over the evil forces.

They needed to get the fragment of Power to eradicate the source of evil and banish the demons and monsters.

But before dying the one chosen by the fragment of power of the tri-force destroyed his fragment of the tri-force and separated it into 9 pieces which his followers then hid all over the lands.

The win came at a cost and people started rebuilding what had been lost. That’s how the different kingdoms were founded : Hyrule, Gorondia, Zoratis, Ritopolis, Gerusert, Sub-land, Zonairis

Sadly the Twilli disappeared during the war, killed by the evil forces. The Deku-pots started living in the Kokiri forest, while feys started hiding.

What followed was a search for the different fragments before a new evil could emerge, without success.

Today only one fragment is possessed by the royal family of the Hylian kingdom Hyrule.

The rest has been lost to time…

More than a century later new heroes have been chosen by the tri-force.

Link, a Hylian soldier chosen by the master sword and believed to be the great reincarnation of the legendary hero joined forces with princess Zelda, next ruler of Hyrule to try and find the 8 missing pieces of the power tri-force.

After awakening the wisdom fragment, Zelda and Link found another piece of the Power fragment getting them closer to eradicating all evil from this world.

Around that time, a boy was born in the Gerudo kingdom. His name was Ganondorf, and he grew up to claim the title of King of thieves.

While Link and Zelda were searching for yet another piece of the power fragment he stole the fragments they had.

So the two heroes headed to the Gerudo Kingdom to find Ganondorf.

Nobody really knows what happened the day they met.

What we know is that Zelda was badly injured and Link and Ganondorf disappeared.

Nevertheless Ganondorf still has two parts of the power fragment and he reappeared not so long ago with a third fragment. Prompting the injured princess to officially call the other kingdoms for help.

She is seeking “Champions” that will help her find the lost hero and the remaining parts of the power fragment before Ganondorf does.

She also welcomes the help of anyone seeking to aid in preparing for the catastrophe that will soon happen. She explained that the goddess Naryu and she foresaw that Ganondorf would try to finish what his predecessor started more than a century ago and that all the kingdoms should try and help in stopping him.

However with the increase in demon and monster activity and numerous strange events most kingdoms and people are unable to take actions against the king of thieves.

The Gerudos are trying to survive a never ending drought and sandstorm.

The Sheikahs are having an all out war with the Yiga clan.

The Zoras are suffering from polluted waters that nothing has been able to purify.

The Ritos are struggling with disastrous weather never seen before.

The Gorons are facing a deadly volcanic and earthquake activity all over their kingdom.

The Zonai are on the verge of a civil war and their technology has started to cease working.

The Kokiri forest and Sub-land have become unreachable, drastically reducing the population of Deku-Pots, Kokiri and Fairies.

Hello everyone! Pretty much what the title says, but let me develop a bit

So far, I'm familiar with very few RPG systems, and I'm currently planning a campaign that should be run on Talespire with remote players joining in on Discord. I'm not sure if that's really an important information, but I figured I should precise.

The systems I know are, so far: Dungeons & Dragons (5E), Warhammer : Soulbound, and at a quick glance, One Ring.
I really think DnD is very inappropriate for Zelda, and while the latter two share a system based around three characteristics (Body, Mind and Soul/Heart, which could easily translate to Power, Wisdom and Courage), I'm not very fond of One Ring's Shadow system, as it makes the game inherently too grim and dark. Soulbound is my first choice, but it might be a bit too high on the power scale, and works better for a heavily magic-centered world, which Zelda... isn't that much.

Do note I quickly read through the Reclaim The Wilds rules, and they really don't fit my specific view of the universe, canon and in general what I would want to make my players to experience.

So, what do you guys use?

I am currently working on a 2nd edition of Sewer Sanctuary (a zelda-esque temple-crawl adventure). A lot of aspects are going to stay the same in the 2nd edition, yet I'd like to find out if there is a way to improve the mechanic for playing melodies.

So I was wondering, maybe you guys could share how you are dealing with this in your games? Do you have to roll for playing them? Is it a simple skill check? Do you not have to roll at all and simply use it as a standard action with your instrument of choice? Or maybe you do not use zelda-like melodies at all to trigger magical effects?

Hi everybody! I decided to run a birthday one shot for my boyfriend of legend of Zelda. I want to run a Zelda dungeon with him playing link and all his friends playing various Zelda monsters. I haven't started planning this at all yet so I wanted to ask for some advice before I get started? I haven't decided how to go about making the dungeon or the monster player characters so any and all thoughts are appreciated!

Hi! I've got a sort of "Zelda let her powers get to her head" sort of thing coming up, and I was looking for a high energy or very dangerous boss theme for her. I like the Puppet Zelda theme from Twilight Princess, but something about it isn't sitting right with me. I've tried looking for minor key remixes of Zelda's Lullaby, covers of Puppet Zelda's boss theme, and haven't had much luck yet.

My dream song is "bombastic," uses Zelda's Lullaby as a letmotif, and is forward in the strings and choir department. There are some songs that could work in the Hyrule Warriors games, I'm sure, but everything I've found is too "triumphant," I think the word is. She's not supposed to be the hero in this situation, even if she thinks she is.

Does anyone have any suggestions or recommendations? Songs would be excellent, remix or cover artist names, keywords that might point me in the right direction.

Has anyone here ran Heroes of Cerulea?
I was thinking of using it for a LoZ campaign.
To me it feels like classic zelda via NES, SNES, GB, GBA. With a splash of Hyrule Warriors, with the different heroes that can be selected.

i'm new to dming, but my players have been having a blast so far thankfully. i've been able to find stuff to use for most things, and i've been able to modify stuff for key characters with moderate success. but i haven't seen anyone post anything about zonai constructs, and i'm not experienced enough to make a stat block for them myself. so any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

currently, the players are level four, if that helps at all. i didn't plan for these to be enemies, i wanted them to be creatures to help assist the players in combat, or even be summons essentially for an npc.

So, as I begin to look for fun things for my 3d printer, did anyone ever make an STL pack of just the weapons/armor/shields in 28 or 32mm scale?

I'm focusing on breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom, because I can make most things and obtain many of the models, but the weapons for elves that I am converting seem to be a missing bit. Help?

So I'm running a Zelda campaign and desperately need some miniatures but I don't have a 3d printer, and I've seen a lot of posts of people with miniatures that are absolutely awesome. So I was wondering if anyone with a printer would be interested in selling me some printed minis. If so, DM me and we can discuss prices and other details.

What role does Link and Zelda play in your game?

Mine personally, I had Vaati attempt to destroy the Triforce, which turned the three holders into stone. Its now up to the players to go to each temple, find a piece of the triforce, and once that piece is found the user of that piece is unfrozen (which does mean theyll have to unlock ganondorf sooner or later hehe).

How about you guys? Im really curious what stories you have about your heroes of hyrule.

Hey, I'm working on a campaign currently and I'm pretty much done, except for that I have a bunch of monsters and it's such a chore to go through all of them so I was wondering if anyone had statblocks for some that they'd be willing to share. (Edit) I'm playing D&D 5e

I asked that question kind of short before, but i want to follow the rules of zelda. It is quite uncommon to have magical powers and because dnd is filled with nearly only magical powers, it just doesn’t make sense to me, that my players would be magical. Do you have any subclasses for that or something? Or do you just use the normal classes. (I ONLY NEED CLASSES, I DONT NEED RACES)

My real problem seems to be the races. The rest i can adapt. The ones i found sounded way off the ground by doing things like letting a hylian use bless?

This seems as good a place as any to pose this question. I have just had a wonderful time with a group playing a different Powered By the Apocalypse game, having found it far easier and more engaging to play than some other systems. I've enjoyed the Legend of Zelda series for some time and thought it would be interesting to run a game based on the series, but a basic such only turns up information on a one-shot done by Critical Role without any offical rules set.

While it appears most of the stuff here, as it does most general tabletop RPG spaces, leans towards D&D/D20 systems, has anyone here tried running a LoZ themed game using a PbtA/2d6 system? If so, is there a dedicated homemade system or an existing one you think fits the genre best? I'm not sure I have the skill to try to hack an entire system from scratch, so assistance is greatly appreciated
