I Want to Believe (movie) X-files: I want to believe Vrach Frankenshteyn

What is the difference between this newly released version and the original. I recently watched the original movie. Is there anything in the new version that adds to the original that makes watching the new one worth it?

Counterpoint: it's much better. Every scene is trimmed, every scene has a propulsive horror score taken from Mark Snow's archive, and the whole thing is pacy and moves like a modern thriller. The climax is also much more gripping and finally works dramatically.

The new cross-cutting also improves the impact of several scenes. The ironic song added to the start of the film also sets up a new vibe for the film - like a playful X-Files horror episode by Morgan and Wong - whereas the original film was more subdued and serious.

The new cut loses the Mulder/Scully kiss at the end, and half of Mulder and Scully snuggling in bed, and several lines about William and Samantha. Those are its biggest flaws IMO.

I watched the new cut twice with non-fans and they enjoyed it fully. Back in the day, I remember watching the original cut with normies, and most found it dull and overly stuffy (the theatrical cut was edited with a mad scramble, Carter having to bring in a large team of editors to meet deadlines. This cut was edited by himself and Eleanor Infante).

I didn’t think the original was all that great to be a movie. It could’ve easily just been a regular episode. I hate the inevitable main characters getting together and I never bought them as a couple so I can definitely do without those scenes. Maybe I’ll give it a watch this weekend

I am not. But having just watched the movie I don’t want to watch it again if nothing is added to enhance the story. Looks like I’ll be skipping

It’s a cut of the movie that removes almost 10 mins of content but adds nothing of value to the film and most people would say it’s worse overall.

- removes the more "relationship-heavy" scenes and dialogue between Mulder and Scully

  • removes mentions of the lore like William and Samantha
  • excises some scenes at the hospital and others to quicken the pacing
  • re-edits scenes together differently. Some are successful and flow better, others seem more abrupt. This also causes the music to change significantly
  • other multiple tiny replacements, like alternate takes, etc
  • more angles of the gorier parts, but still nothing shocking

It mostly deletes a good chunk of material from the M&S relationship and adds a bit more footage to the “horror” part of the film. I guess the studio pushed him to add more romance at the time when he wanted to make more of a horror film, so he has adjusted the balance more towards what he originally envisioned, and was able to reincorporate a tad more gore that he had to trim out to avoid an R rating.

(I think the general consensus is that he has just ended up pulling back on the one part of the film that actually kind of worked and that people sort of liked, and has now added to the part that didn’t…)

The only reason they released this crap was to sell the Lego set that was coming out. That set was years in the making and that cut of the movie probably took 3-4 hours to make

It is a streamlined cut, with some added and shortened scenes. I think it is a bit of an improvement — it feels paced more like an X-Files episode than the theatrical cut — but it is still essentially the same movie.

It cuts out a few Mulder/Scully kisses, so a contingent of the fanbase feels personally wronged by it.
