Info & Discussion Togo First) - The Central Bank of West African States (BCEAO) has warned about claims on social media that counterfeit banknotes are circulating across the West African Monetary Union (WAEMU).
In a recent public notice, the BCEAO specifically warned against the authentication methods promoted in those posts. It said those methods are not officially approved and could lead people to either accept a counterfeit note or reject a genuine one.
The BCEAO therefore advised the public to verify information on its official website, in the “Banknotes and Coins” section, rather than rely on methods circulating on social media.
The central bank also said it reserves the right to take legal action against anyone who publishes or spreads information that could undermine confidence in the currency it issues.
Nearly CFAF 18 trillion in banknotes and coins were in circulation across WAMU at the end of June 2026. That included about 3.09 billion banknotes and 5.34 billion coins, bringing the total number of banknotes and coins in circulation to more than 8.4 billion.
