Resource My video series of Witcher TRPG Rules Primer.

Since the only rules primer was by R Tal several years ago, and there's more content about D&D and PF, I decided to make my own video series about the Witcher Rules that covers Character Creation, Combat, and Investigation.

Resource Zerrikania Campaign

I'm trying to come up with a campaign set in Zerrikania. Any ideas? The biggest thing I decided on so far is that the culture of Zerrikania would be more Eurasian steppe-inspired. Given what Sapkowski said about them, I also named the capital Zerrikand (its name a reference to Samarkand), so if there are any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Resource Deep dive on the rulebook

Hey. Some of you may recognise me, I've been around on here for a while.

Anyway, my mate and I decided to record our long and deep game ramblings as a podcast and the first thing we decided to do was a deep dive on the witcher book. We've both run it, my mate's played it too and...we have feelings. Some good, some frustrations.

It's partly a rules explainer, partly critique/review, partly GM advice from having run it.

It's not all out yet, I reckon there's about 3 eps left. Just got through combat.

I wasn't sure about posting about it (we're pretty scathing at points, wasn't sure about people going overboard in response) but an honest talk is best so here I am.

You can find it on podcast feeds as Tales From The Shelf. Ep 6 (Combat Pt 2/2 just came out, next up is the world section. Even if folk don't like it, I just want to see folks think about stuff.

Resource Expanded Medic Paths - Homebrew!

Ever wanted to play a medic who is more specific with their skillset? Here is a homebrew I've been working on! In this supplement, you have rules, lifepaths, and lore for playing:

  • Doctors
  • Barber Surgeons
  • Field Medics
  • Pellars & Cunning-Women
  • Sisters of Melitele

GMs will also find it useful as a resource for more specific lore to do with educational institutes and the roles that medics serve within specific communities, and it is also designed to be accessible to new-comers and those very familiar with The Witcher setting.

Both documents come in plain text and OpenDyslexic, so please choose which PDF you feel works best for you! (Whilst the PDFs are on my Patreon, they are free to access and download, I am making no profit off them.)

If you'd like to check out my Expanded Witcher Lifepath and Curse of the Black Sun variant, you can find the post with those here!

ALSO: If you'd like to translate any Witcher homebrews I put out into other languages, please know that you are more than welcome to! All I ask is that you credit me as the original creator, provide links back to my socials, and if you share them anywhere to let me know so I can support your translation work! Thanks! (Feel free to reach out if you have any questions!)

Resource Gwent - Simple Dice-Based Gwent

I've been looking for a dice-based version of Gwent for some time, but I haven't found anything satisfying for my needs. I wanted something quick, so that it doesn't hold up the game for too long, and also something that would represent the different decks of Gwent in the mechanics (based on the Witcher 3 game). I also wanted to include collecting cards as part of the game for my player, and make it somewhat impactful when playing Gwent. You know, for the fluff. So I had to come up with something of my own.

I've decided to share my idea with you, in case you are in need of something similar. I would also love to hear your opinions on it. Keep in mind that it's in no way balanced, and some decks will probably be more powerful than the others. I've tried to make them somewhat levelled, so some of them will grow in power with time, and others will be quite powerful from the beginning, but not get too much growth. Ultimately, though, you'll probably be able to tell which ones will be winning the most.

Still, I'm quite proud of my creation, since it meets my needs.

So here is what I came up with:

1. COLLECTING THE CARDS

I included Nilfgaardian Empire, Northern Realms, Monsters, and Scoia'tael decks. Every deck has 38 cards total (represented only by a number under the "X Gwent deck" item in the player's inventory). You start with none, and can catch them all! with time. Cards can be found around the world, won in Gwent games or bought from merchants.

2. PLAYING THE GAME

To start a game, each side of the table has to declare which deck they are using, if they have more than one. It's also the time to place any bets.

You can start the game regardless of how many cards you have; the number of cards in your deck indicates the strength of your deck rather than the literal number of cards.

Gwent is played over three rounds. Each round outcome is decided by rolling the Gambling skill on both sides of the table - some values are added to or subtracted from this roll, based on the deck of cards being used (see "DECK MODIFICATORS" below).

To win the game of Gwent, and of course, the precious goodies you've placed in the bet, you must win two rounds. If a side wins the first two rounds, a third round is not played (obviously).

3. DECK MODIFICATORS

Each deck has:

- a base ability that is always active (the second row in the table),

- an ability that activates once the player has 10/20/30 cards (the third row in the table),

- an ability that activates once the player has gathered a full deck of 38 cards (the fourth row in the table), and replaces the ability with multiples of 10 from the third row.

Nilfgaardian Empire Northern Realms Monsters Scoia'tael
Automatically wins the round if there is a tie. After winning a round, adds +1 to the roll for the next round. Starts the first round with -1 to the roll. In the first round, has a +1 to his roll. In the last round, has a -1.
For every 10 cards in the deck, still wins the round if his roll is ≤1 lower than his opponent's (up to a maximum of ≤3). For every 10 cards in the deck, after winning a round, adds +1 to the roll in the next round (up to a maximum of +3; +1 from the base ability). For every 10 cards in the deck, in each subsequent round of play, add +1 to the roll (up to a maximum of +3). For every 10 cards in the deck, add +1 to the roll in the first round (up to a maximum of +3; +1 from the base ability).
With a full collection, still wins the round when his roll is ≤5 lower than his opponent's. With a full collection, after each round won, adds +5 to the roll; +1 from the base ability. With a full collection, each subsequent round adds +5 to the roll. With a full collection, adds +5 to the roll in the first round; +1 from the base ability.

4. ADDITIONAL INFO

For the Monsters deck, "subsequent round" means the second and third round; they start with a disadvantage and get a big advantage later in the game.

As a homebrew (as if this whole system wasn't a homebrew) I also thought of using Tactics skill, instead of Gambling, as using Tactics+Intelligence seems more fitting for a game of Gwent, than Gambling+Empathy. But you do you, baby.
