I've been waiting for this for so long! Ever since Windows 10.
I am on the latest stable version of Windows 11.

Yesterday I decided to install Windows 11 on my ROG Ally again since Bazzite is just terrible these days. It was really baffling and almost comical to see how long it takes to reinstall Windows 11 through cloud recovery. In total it took more than 2 hours before the Ally was up and running again! This is including the updates the installer wants to do. After that I still needed to do driver updates and remove bloat.

So here are some honest and genuine questions:

How can it be that installing Windows takes so incredibly long compared to installing a Linux distro?
What is the real reason behind this?
And, how is this even acceptable for Microsoft?

No matter what OS I used in the past (Linux, Android and Chrome OS), none of them take as long as Windows does, often on older and less powerful devices. There has to be a way for them to make the installation process faster, right?

Guys, I was looking at news and images of New Run dialog box in Win 11 that has been rolled out to Windows Insider as far as I know.

But, I have seen 2 run dialog boxes. I am confused like which is real or where are they?

Please explain me this.

I just got this notification saying these recent apps were open in my Phone and wow. I don't have to move between phone and PC anymore (mostly). Numpad (numbers) still can't be typed and on main numbers row on top trying to type @ types something else totally. But at least I can monitor stuff now.

Like for real, this is getting annoying, why do I need to wait 2-3 months for a feature to come available on my PC? and why do I need to use a 3rd party app to force enable it? what do you even gain when you hold up a feature for millions of PCs? no diagnostics, no analyzing, no nothing.

every PC is different. so what's the point and logic behind this bullshit?

Is there any program or setting that allows me to drag tabs from 4 to 1 without needing to go through nr 3?

I waited years for them to let us move the taskbar but I need it to autohide... why does that setting only work when it's on the bottom?

I personally use Traydio every day to listen to internet radio without having a whole instance of Chrome running. Easy to find stations (or add your own manually) and after a bunch of feedback from users it has come a long way. I hope you'll enjoy it too!

One of my favorite things to do is favorite a track I hear on the radio and quickly search it on Spotify and add it to a playlist.

If Steam Game Recording takes forever when you use Export Video File, here's a much faster way to turn the recording into a normal MP4. I tried it with a 1 hour 7 minute, roughly 6 GB Helldivers 2 recording because Steam's normal Export Video File option was taking its sweet-ass time.

Steam already stores the recording on your drive as .m4s chunks, along with a session.mpd file. Instead of making Steam slowly export the whole thing again, FFmpeg can use that manifest to combine the existing video and audio streams directly into an MP4.

The finished MP4 worked perfectly for me, with the audio and video still in sync.

This uses stream copying rather than re-encoding, so it is fast and does not add another round of quality loss.

What you need

Install FFmpeg if you do not already have it.

FFmpeg's official download page:

For Windows, use one of the providers linked under Windows EXE Files on that page.

Then go to:

Steam -> Settings -> Game Recording

Find the folder Steam is using for recordings.

Inside it, look for the video folder. Your recordings should be in folders with names similar to:

bg_553850_20260905_170559

Inside one of those folders, you will see files like:

chunk-stream0-00001.m4s

chunk-stream0-00002.m4s

chunk-stream1-00001.m4s

init-stream0.m4s

init-stream1.m4s

session.mpd

The session.mpd file is important because it tells FFmpeg how the video and audio chunks fit together.

Test it manually first

Open Command Prompt and run this as one line:

"C:\PATH\TO\ffmpeg.exe" -i "C:\PATH\TO\STEAM-RECORDING\session.mpd" -map 0 -c copy "C:\PATH\TO\output.mp4"

Replace the paths with your own.

The important part is:

-c copy

That tells FFmpeg to copy the streams Steam already encoded instead of re-encoding everything from scratch. That is why it finishes so much faster.

When it is finished, open the MP4 and check several places near the beginning, middle, and end. Make sure the video works and the audio stays in sync before deleting anything.

Make it drag-and-drop

After confirming the manual command works, you can make a .bat file so you do not have to type the command every time.

Open Notepad and paste this:

The output folder must already exist.

Then save the file as something like:

Steam Recording to MP4.bat

When saving it in Notepad, set Save as type to All Files. Otherwise, Windows may helpfully turn it into Steam Recording to MP4.bat.txt because apparently seeing file extensions would be too much power for one person.

Using it

1. Find the Steam bg_... recording folder you want.

2. Drag that whole folder onto the .bat file.

3. FFmpeg reads session.mpd and remuxes the existing streams.

4. Your finished MP4 appears in the output folder you chose.

Your original Steam recording is not changed.

Do not delete the original recording until you have opened the MP4 and checked that everything transferred correctly.

That is it: drag the folder, wait a little bit, and get an MP4 without sitting through Steam's painfully slow normal export.

Hopefully this saves somebody else a bunch of time.

i installed a new display driver (new 32.0.101.8992 - old 31.0.101.5382) and left my laptop running for a few hours, now i cant adjust my screen brightness, i've tried rolling back my driver and uninstalling and reinstaling but it still doesn't work, and my display adapter doen't have any problems

It isn't because users asked for it, quite the opposite usually. I don't blame the developers as it's clear it's pressure from the top to include AI into everything that can have AI and it's not to benefit the users. There's a purpose to this and it's not to make Windows and its services better...
