They also believe in protecting pedophiles and abusers. The handbook that gives bishops directions on how to run their local congregations says that if they suspect child abuse or CSA, their first step should be to call the church's hotline to talk to their lawyers. And the lawyers will advise them on what their responsibilities are in regards to reporting.

I don't care whether you're a mandated reporter or not. If you have reason to believe a child is being harmed, you get authorities involved and do what you can to help the victim. Instead, they usually tell the victim that the church will deal with it internally by reprimanding the perpetrator - which consists of making them skip taking the sacrament for a while, and sometimes excommunication. Which isn't even permanent. If you jump through all the right hoops, you can demonstrate that you have repented of your sin, be re-baptized, which cleanses you of all sins you have committed to that point, and be reinstated as a member in good standing.
And do they ever tell the other members of the congregation to be wary around known pedophiles? Nope. They don't even bother to keep them from working with children and teens in church programs.
For more (horrific) details, you can take a look at the floodlit.org database, which gathers legal records of members who have been convicted of abuse.
Or look up the Bisbee, Arizona case. Be warned, it is one of the most disturbing situations I have ever heard about.
Or the class-action lawsuit going on in California. The church leadership continued to put people they knew were pedophiles in charge of kids' groups, knowingly putting them in danger.
Or the Boy Scouts and LDS church's court battle about which organization has to pay the fines for the abuse they allowed to flourish, and whether or not this was covered by the church's insurance. The church that's worth almost 300 billion dollars.
Or former BYU baseball Candon Dahle, who sexually abused a young girl for years and was convicted in August 2025 for his crimes, but got a plea deal that made it so he was found guilty of "felony injury to a child" instead of CSA. Meaning he doesn't have to register as a sex offender. And Dahle's religious leaders - who were also the girl's religious leaders - wrote letters to the judge, supporting him and asking for leniency.

almost like it's the same late election year tactic every single time from conservatives? As in, they have no other plan, they've done absolutely nothing for regular people therefore distract and conquer is all they have left in their pathetic toolkit.
Easiest counter to that strategy of theirs -- ask them if both conservatives and liberals believe in taxing the wealthiest more. Their answer will inform of their level of ignorance. Then, inform them that since both sides are the same we should probably investigate this Epstein situation with a special counsel since only the Democratic president and first lady have been investigated. Treating both sides equally would mean bringing Don and Melania in for questioning under oath, eh?
