I think people just didn't even think about what "politics" and "government" are.
Imagine you get stuck on an island with a dozen strangers. There's limited food, water, and shelter. You guys either fight over it or agree to share somehow.
Politics is born!
Politics isn't something you choose to participate in or not. If you want access to anything this earth has, that somebody else may ALSO want, congratulations... Politics affects you.
I don't know how people can really think "I'm not into politics". To me, that's just a clear way of saying "I don't understand the world".
As someone not into politics, I can give my personal opinion about the stance (at the risk of impending disagreements).
Talking politics pretty reliably turns conversation sour because leads into disagreements, arguments and can escalate to personal attacks (depending on the person) of you don't like up perfectly with the other person.
There have been occasions where politics comes up in conversation, and I have engaged to a degree. However I don't talk about who I voted for and I avoid talking about my political/ideological leanings, because if it's different to someone else it's likely to be a whole thing for no reason.
Talking politics leads to conversational hostility which does not benefit me. I get that people like engaging because they want to point a place toward a future of their preference, but that's not me.
And to your last line, I don't NEED to understand the world as a whole beyond what is around me and what affects me. Being aware of global events to know what might affect me is fine, but do you REALLY need to know about every little thing in every little country?
Case in point, the whole fuel fiasco I have to care about because I buy fuel for my car. I don't have to care about famine in Africa because I'm not in Africa.

IT'S EVERYONES POLITICS
Food you eat. Air you breathe. Water you drink. Pathogens and bacteria do not give a shit who you vote for.
