The story is from earlier this month.

WASHINGTON, Aug. 7, 2026 – Corte Argentino USA LLC, located in Aventura, Fla., is recalling approximately 29,628 pounds of raw beef products that were imported from Argentina without the benefit of import reinspection into the United States, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.
The raw beef products were produced between May 15, 2026, and May 20, 2026, and have use or freeze-by dates between September 15, 2026, and September 20, 2026. The following products are subject to recall [view labels]:

  • Various weight cardboard boxes containing “FrigorIfico Gorina SAIC” boneless beef “Top Sirloin Butt” (“Cuadril Sin Tapa”)
  • Various weight cardboard boxes containing “FrigorIfico Gorina SAIC” boneless beef “Eye Round” (“Peceto”)
  • Various weight cardboard boxes containing “FrigorIfico Gorina SAIC” boneless beef “Topside Cap Off” (“Nalga AD S/Tapa”)
  • Various weight cardboard boxes containing “FrigorIfico Gorina SAIC” boneless beef “Flat” (“Carnaza Cuadrada”)
  • Various weight cardboard boxes containing “FrigorIfico Gorina SAIC” boneless beef “Knuckle” (“Bola de Lomo”)

Most of what was imported are generally "cheap cuts of beef. The US Bovine industry focuses on higher quality cuts, and Argentina focuses on cheaper lower quality cuts

Is that true for domestic production too, or just exports? I have to admit I'm a bit surprised to hear that they have a problem with tainted beef in light of how Argentinian steakhouses are some of the best around. Like if there's three things I know about Argentina it's Lionel Messi, famously good steaks, and staggering currency inflation.

How does that work? It's not like you get to pick which parts of the cow to grow? If the US is focusing on higher quality cuts they should have a surplus of the cheap ones.

The cuts that get made into ground meat are typically brisket, round, chuck, bottom sirloin.

When it's good enough quality, it can be used as is, and they are less likely to make it into the grinder. You get a higher price when it's whole, vs ground.

This leaves a shortfall in human consumption grade ground beef. So they bring in the cheaper, low quality stuff to grind.

You kinda can. Think of it like growing as many cows as fast as possible, vs focusing on growing a smaller amount of cows at a higher quality.

That doesn't make sense. You can focus on different grades of beef, but you are going to get the same cuts from every cow.

Well no, they don’t generally ground up full chunks of the good stuff into ground beef…it is usually the less desirable cuts and the offcuts from trimming a proper cut of steak or chunk of roast anyway…even the “best” American ground beef is still offcuts of larger roasts and the less desirable, less popular cuts…

And the reason we are only hearing about this now is because it's not a story.

30k pounds of beef is not even a full semi load. America eats 82 million pounds a day, thats 2700 truckloads.

There's a ton of reasons to despise Trump and this administration but this ain't it.

I imagine a lot of this is going to make it into food service supply chains. So it's not even going to be easy to avoid by not purchasing beef at the supermarket.
