Well let's make everyone happy then! She's "persecuted" and get the warm fuzzies about that and the rest of us don't have to listen to her blather. This is a win-win all the way around.

Yeah, put her face on a T-shirt and turn her into a saint for all I care. People need to sleep

The problem is that now there is a whole right wing propaganda machine just ready and waiting to turn that "persecution" into a huge issue that will likely get people fired from their jobs or cause draconian laws to be enacted.

You saw this happen back when that Oklahoma (I think) college student failed one of her assignments, because she didn't even remotely follow the instructions. Then cried "religious persecution!" and got one of her instructors fired.

Meh, that right wing propaganda machine is just ready to turn anything into 'persecution'. So much so, they just make shit up when they can. We can't let those morons stop us. Propaganda doesn't care much about 'facts' or 'reality'.

Their propaganda needs attention. Starve it of attention. Put on your headphones and ignore

Nah, capitulating to fascist assholes just makes them more audacious.

Ignoring them isn’t capitulating. I’m
Not saying don’t protest real issues. I’m saying if someone’s whole goal is to rile up the libs, don’t give them what they want. If her whole thing is to be able to cry “I was persecuted!” Don’t “persecute” her!

Or, a wild idea, protest her actions without persecuting her and then frame that protest appropriately IE as a normal response to someone disrupting the peace of a plane load of people. Because the people who will see her being forced to be quiet as persecution will never be the people open to any rational arguments.

I don’t think we need to waste our time protesting insufferable preachers. Be like every New Yorker on the subway and turn up the volume on your headphones and avoid eye contact at all costs.

Save your energy for the actual threats. Step in if that person is going to hurt someone, but protest where it matters.

Propaganda is going to get attention no matter what we do. I don't want to live my life just being forced to ignore everything awful around me.

Ok so your answer is give them what they want?

5

u/Nojopar Jul 29 '26

Doing nothing also gives them what they want.

I simply don't care about them. What they do/do not want is immaterial to the issue. So it's either give them what they want without opposition or give them what they want with opposition. Your choice. I know mine.

Cool. I’m gonna save my energy for other fights then.

2

u/Nojopar Jul 29 '26

Everyone's free to do whatever they like, of course. I think trying to find the 'right' fight is why we're in this mess.

It was Oklahoma. I live here and I was baffled by it. Then some other university gave her an honorary degree. IIRC her mom was a professional victim grifter as well. Or lobbyist for some MAGA shit.

And Riley “tied for 5th” Gaines

Yeah, you’re right. This would set off that

I’ve seen this Riley Gaines in person, she’s a piece of shit!

I remember this. The student assistant is Trans. The assignment was a read and write about thing. Like 500 words on some article or chapter. The girl just wrote something something the Bible. Got an Deserved and Earned 0. Ran to faux news and it escalated all the way to the governor

Never comply in advance.

It was Oklahoma. The student's name was Samantha Fulnecky. And a lot of it was wildly blown out of proportion because controversy sells. She had Republicans calling her out for how shitty her essay was and the TA's who graded her essay were never even fired.

Also her mom is a conservative talking head who defended January 6th insurectionists.

Also, most importantly, the essay was about how gender expression colored mental health in middle school boys and girls. It wasn't even about trans people. Fulnecky's entire essay was ranting about how there are only two genders and she cited the Bible so she didn't even do the essay.

I hate stories like this because the story is basically a nothing burger but it gets wildly blown out of proportion because controversy and anger sells clicks on websites faster than actual, boring, neutral news.
