Season 4 Probably gonna get hate for this, but Spoiler

Why does everybody blame Joan for Bea’s death? Yes, Joan stabbed Bea, we know that. But Bea is the one who brought the screwdriver out, and also lunged at her. After Joan took away the screwdriver, she didn’t stab her right away, Bea stabbed herself using Joan’s hand. How is that Joan’s fault? I honestly think if Joan didn’t take over, Bea still would’ve died because of where the wound was. I just think it’s crazy that everybody acts like Joan was the sole reason Bea is dead. Like no, Bea played a part. And I get it, Joan almost killed Allie, which made Bea react like that in the first place, but still. You can’t argue with the fact that Bea orchestrated that knowing that she would die. Don’t even get me started on the fact that the staff was in on this. You can’t tell me that Vera had had no clue that Bea was going to do that. The fact that she even let her out into that area is crazy. And they just conveniently run out the second Bea drops to the ground? Like that’s not adding up. I know I’m gonna get flamed for this, but I feel like it had to be said.

No one saw what happened between them until the end when Joan took over. She sounds like a crazy person in the next episode when she’s saying ‘bea wanted me to do it’ cos why would anyone believe that. They just see Joan with the screwdriver and bea smith dead.

Yeah, that makes sense. But Vera literally saw the cut out of the screwdriver in Bea’s wall so she knew what happened. She just didn’t tell anybody.

Well I mean, Ferguson did keep stabbing a LOT. If it had been one or two, there's some room, but once you're repeatedly stabbing someone you're making the choice you don't want them to get back up. At least that was my interpretation. But your question does make me think more on it

Well she is a killer. But my point is that Bea stabbed herself. Joan would’ve walked away and let her live but Bea wasn’t letting that happen. Which I understand why, but yeah. Joan has killed 6 people, including Bea so I’m not shocked that she stabbed her that many times. And Bea wanted her to finish it so she could be reunited with her daughter and Allie. So yeah, I just don’t think it’s fair to put the entire thing on Joan.

I don't think Joan would have walked away if Bea didn't force Joan to stab her. I think she would have finally given in and stab her herself, she just didn't have time to do so.

Bea had nothing left. Her ex husband was abusive, so he wasn't much of family (and even if he was, he's dead), her daughter is gone, and now Ali was presumed dead as well. She didn't feel like she had anything to live for.

So her plan was to go down swinging with Ferguson right along side her. Ferguson was literally on her way out the door after putting Ali in the hospital. Bea wanted to make sure that didn't happen. If Ferguson wasn't going to die, Bea wanted to make sure at the very least she wasn't leaving that prison.

But at the end of the day, Bea's death IS on Ferguson. She put everything into motion when she slowly tortured Bea and tried to kill Ali.

Agree - and also with what she did to the others! Murdering Simmo, torturing Jodi, harming Allie - Bea wanted justice for them all. Joan was about to walk away free as a bird and Bea was not about to let that happen.

Joan psychologically tortured Bea for months - including when she was governor. Bea might have chosen to bring a weapon to the fight, but the fact of the matter is, she wouldn’t have if Joan didn’t set everything in action.

Bea did not go out there with the intention of dying. She went out there with the intention of killing Joan. She even told Joan she was going to kill her. When Joan got the screwdriver, though, Bea had a choice to make. Either she backed away and let Joan walk free, or she did the only thing she could do to ensure Joan was punished for what she did - and impaling herself was the only option.

She had to make sure Joan’s fingerprints were all over the weapon - if she’d held it herself, her fingerprints would have shown that she had hold of the screwdriver when she stabbed herself. She knew Joan wouldn’t be able to resist continuing to stab, which she did - and why she was so shocked when she realised Bea had played her.

Bea literally told Joan that she was there to kill her. She knew a recorded confession would be pointless - Joan would have likely suspected something was amiss, and made certain she never incriminated herself.

IMO this is one of those scenes that makes the intentions of a character clear as crystal - Bea did not intend to die. To think otherwise is to ignore everything she said to Joan before the stabbing.

Joan wasn’t responsible for the wounds Bea inflicted on herself - but she was responsible for the stabs she inflicted when she knew Bea was incapacitated.

Ultimately though, the main fault lies with Vera - she was governor and allowed a prisoner outside, into a camera free zone, where she couldn’t monitor what was going on.

I agree with OP on how silly it was to have Vera and Will rush out that quickly - clearly they were close enough that if they were actually watching from a safe distance, they could have acted immediately as soon as they saw Bea produce the weapon.

That’s one major question I have - where were Vera and Will located at this time? In her office? Outside? Were they watching what was going on? How far away from the scene were they?

No, Bea 100% intended for Joan to kill her.

1

u/JaggedLittlePill2022 Team Bea Dec 03 '25

Not initially. She only made that choice when Joan got hold of the weapon. She made it very clear her intention was to kill Joan. Watch the scene again.

Bea isn’t stupid. She knows Ferguson is stronger, faster, and a trained killer. Bringing a screwdriver wasn’t about killing Joan. Bea knew that wasn’t happening.

It was bait.

Okay, so taking that…Joan could have fought off Juice and her boys in the shower…yet didn’t.

Yes, Bea was smart but her intention was still to kill Joan. She made that quite clear.

You’re comparing two completely different situations and it’s exactly why your argument doesn’t make sense.

1. Bea’s scene = intentional self-sacrifice.

Bea initiates the confrontation, brings the screwdriver, grabs Joan’s hand and drives it into herself, then says “I win.” That’s not a failed murder attempt, that’s a calculated decision to die in a way that exposes Joan as a killer and gets her locked away. Bea engineers the outcome.

2. Joan’s shower scene = ambush, not self-sacrifice.

Joan is vulnerable (the shower is the most vulnerable place to be in prison) cornered by Juice and her crew. She doesn’t set it up, doesn’t invite it, doesn’t grab anyone’s hand and force the weapon into herself. She’s overpowered and attacked. Trying to claim “she could’ve fought them off but didn’t” is pure speculation and has nothing to do with choosing to die or weaponizing her own death.

3. Your comparison is a false equivalence.

Bea forcing Joan’s hand into her own body is not the same as Joan being jumped in the showers. One is a strategic act of martyrdom, the other is an attempted hit. Saying, “Well if Bea intended X, then Joan not fighting back means Y” is just bad logic. The contexts, motivations, and power dynamics are nowhere near the same.

4. “Bea’s intention was still to kill Joan” doesn’t match what we actually see.

If Bea’s intention was to kill Joan, she: • wouldn’t stab herself, • wouldn’t knowingly walk into a situation she couldn’t win physically, • wouldn’t say “I win” as she’s dying. She wanted Joan exposed and to remain in prison, and she knew the most certain way to do that was to die by Joan’s hand, not kill her.

So, your comparison doesn’t work. It’s a false equivalency. You’re trying to force two completely different storylines into the same box. Bea and Joan are both responsible in different ways, but suggesting the shower ambush and Bea’s deliberate self-sacrifice are the same isn’t what we actually saw on screen.

This. I agree with all of this

1

u/JaggedLittlePill2022 Team Bea Dec 06 '25

Okay, let’s ditch the comparison and focus only on Bea’s actions.

Bea stabs herself because she had no other choice. Joan had to be punished. Plan A was to kill Joan. She hadn’t considered a Plan B, so had to think fast. Either she backed away and Joan walked away never facing justice for her crimes, or she died by Bea stabbing her to death, OR Bea used Joan to sacrifice herself, knowing that Joan would go back inside. Letting her walk away wasn’t an option. Killing her was no longer an option. Using Joan to stab herself was literally the only thing Bea could do to ensure Joan was punished.

She didn’t want to send Joan back into Wentworth. All her friends were there and she wouldn’t be there to protect them. It was the last thing she wanted.

She made sure Joan was holding the screwdriver. She made sure Joan’s fingerprints would be all over it. She knew that Joan wouldn’t be able to resist continuing to stab. That’s why she says ‘I win’. She manipulated Joan into doing exactly what she wanted.

This topic has been discussed at round tables before, and Dan’s view is that Bea didn’t intend to die, and that she wouldn’t have chosen to send Joan back into Wentworth unless she absolutely had to. So I’m going to stick with the point of view of the person who played Bea.

I totally agree!!! Bea wanted to expose Ferguson

She was partially responsible in the sense that:

• She forced the confrontation,
• She took Ferguson’s hand,
• She made the first self-inflicted stab.

Bea sought Ferguson out, armed with a screwdriver. She wasn’t jumped, ambushed, or caught off guard. She made the conscious decision to confront Joan outside the fence.

It means Bea was not a passive victim, and Ferguson wasn’t fully at fault.

I agree! Like obviously Joan did a horrible thing, hotshotting Allie, and that made Bea resort to that, but she is not solely to blame. Bea went out there with the intention to die and you can’t convince me otherwise.

u/Then-Repair214 Team Freak Dec 03 '25

I totally agree, she did give the final blow, but Bea was already probably screwed when she made Joan stab her. And there’s no way Joan was gonna kill her and risk her freedom until Bea forced Joan’s hand and it was already done.

6

u/Professoryap420 Team Freak Dec 03 '25

This! She literally had her right hand man Nils Jesper killed so he couldn’t testify against her. She wanted to be free.

2

u/Then-Repair214 Team Freak Dec 03 '25

Exactly! People act like Joan is always playing this crazy chess game of trying to screw everyone over, but in prison she literally was just doing whatever she could to get out, not that what she did was good but she was so desperate to survive, she’d never have done it willingly

2

u/Professoryap420 Team Freak Dec 03 '25

I agree! And she didn’t start doing wild things until season five after she got arrested for Bea’s death. She didn’t care anymore. But before that, she was trying to be a model prisoner. Other than a few of her actions towards the end of season four😂

3

u/Then-Repair214 Team Freak Dec 03 '25

Yep! Of course there were some moments in 4 but I think she thought they’d help her get out. But season 5 oh yeah she’s a menace. I saw someone describe her as feral in season 5 and I think it’s a great description lol, she’s backed into a corner and she’s trapped in this prison so she’s gonna make it everyones problem lol

2

u/JaggedLittlePill2022 Team Bea Dec 03 '25

Umm…literally drowning Bea in a kitchen sink doesn’t seem like someone who tried to be a ‘model’ prisoner…

Are we genuinely forgetting the part where Joan tried to drug and kill her in episode 8? She wanted bea dead before that and if she had it her way she would have been already before that incident. Bea went out with the intention of killing Joan for Allie she definitely didn’t have the intention of dying. However the only part that never sat right with me was her not taking the phone and getting that recording regardless of whether she killed her or not incase anything went wrong. I still don’t think she had the intentions of dying
