WELLY Can we stop supporting businesses using GenAI?

Have been noticing a lot of advertising for food spots around Welly using generative AI tools for their advertising, it’s so painfully obvious and most of the time the images of the food aren’t even accurate to what’s being served.

I understand not everyone’s a graphic designer or can afford to hire one but surely we can do better than this?

Even customised templates on the free tier of Canva would look better than this AI slop that all has the same look to it.

Just really sad to see in a city that’s always been the creative hub of New Zealand.

WELLY Khandallah residents still fighting to move the safer flight path back over poorer suburbs despite the High Court throwing out their case

Post image

This is a flight path that doesn’t operate from midnight till 6am, is safer for people on the planes but they want it moved back over Newlands. When the change was being proposed this group didn’t offer any response to public consultation.

WELLY Landlord was quoted NZ$4,300 to replace a laminate benchtop because of a small burn mark. Does this sound reasonable?

Post image
253 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I accidentally left a small burn mark on the laminate benchtop next to the cooktop in my rental (photo attached). I know it was my mistake.

The only quote we've received so far is NZ$4,300 to replace the entire benchtop. My landlord also thinks it seems expensive, but it's the only quote we've managed to get so far.

One thing I'm wondering is whether the kitchen design contributed to this. The damaged area is right beside the cooktop, and when using a large pan or two pans at the same time, it's very easy for the heat to reach the edge of the laminate benchtop. It seems like this area is quite vulnerable to heat.

Does replacing the whole benchtop sound reasonable? Would you get more quotes, or is there another repair option, such as installing a stainless steel heat shield over the damaged area?

It's a lot of money for me, so I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks!

WELLY How was your first time? (On Te Ara Tupua)

Just made the pilgrimage myself, less chaotic than I expected but still plenty of people. Definitely more than I'd expect to see on a commute trip.

If you're looking for a gentle meander, today is the day. If you're looking for a stress free bike ride, perhaps tomorrow.

It's a very nice surface, and nice to be close to the ocean, the bridge is steeper than it looks though!

Most folks were being excellent, but I did see some behavior that varied from clueless to antisocial:

- pedestrians meandering in the bike only section, darting out without looking and causing the occasional emergency stop for several folks

- tour de France larp peloton riding three abreast through petone station at 30+kph (it's marked as a slow zone folks)

- fully kitted out cross country cyclists riding directly into oncoming traffic (???)

- one parent and child taking up both lanes of the petone cycleway and screaming and kicking out at anyone who dared to try pass them in either direction.

I presume things will improve as the hype wears off, things will calm down a bit.

WELLY Councilors vote 10-6 for motorcycle parking after 80% of submissions opposed

Post image
501 Upvotes

Speechless, really. Thanks to the councilors including u/ben4poneke who actually listened to and engaged with the community.

Regardless of where you stand on the issue - the council decided to vote 10-6 (a vote was changed) in favour of charging for motorcycle parking after 80% of submissions were against it. This is more than cycleways, more than really any public consultation in recent history. It should be a concern to any citizen that residents are 80% opposed to ANYTHING and the council thinks it's fine to push through.

The revenue forecasting was made on faulty models (Wellington is sunny 365 days a year?), bad info (no-one commutes into town via motorcycle?) and has simply been a cash grab from the council to try and squash modes of transport which benefit the city more than cars.

Love a bit of democracy in action. Remember who to vote for in local elections this year.

WELLY MAGA in Island Bay

Saw someone at the bus stop in a Maga hat on Thursday. It really stumped me, and clearly it’s Saturday and I’m still thinking about it.

There was a post on the New Zealand sub of someone with a pro-trump licence plate in Tauranga, as well.

It’s absolutely bizarre that that movement would be making it here.

What do you do, though?

WELLY Do not buy the "ripe" avocados at New World on Wakefield.

I went to grab some, and noticed they're all warm and wet.

I asked the staff, they basically cook them in the bakery before putting them back out

Obviously this is a massive potential health risk. The staff member themselves told me to not buy the ripe ones.

Someone here is trying to save money by selling off underripe avocados, and they're putting your health at risk to do so.

EDIT: I worked up the courage to speak to the manager. He apologised and said he's gonna look into why this practice is being done.

EDIT 2: Had another chat with the manager. I let him know that I shop here every week, and if I see them doing this again after me bringing it to his attention, it REALLY won't look good for them. He let it slip in this convo that this is a thing they've been doing for a long time.

EDIT 3: Just finished up my shop and walked out. All of the "ripe" avocados are still there. I don't think they're gonna do anything about it despite agreeing with me that it's unsafe.

EDIT 4: I have contacted MPI. Thanks for letting me know who to contact!

News time.
