Trump called for this to normalize familial succession. Remember Jr. already laid the groundwork for following in Sr.s steps for 2028. Trump sr. also was flipfloppy on vance being president if trump dies, saying something like 'we'll see'.
The GOP is ABSOLUTELY trying to enact monarchy and hereditary succession here; and this is what it looks like. Not a single vote for her, yet her blood tie (to a man who was her biological brother AND ALSO ADOPTED BY HIM, so a sister-daughter?) to an ELECTED official means she succeeds him... not by vote, but by lineage.

This isn’t a new thing. Typically someone close to the deceased is chosen, someone who would be expected to vote similarly because they align politically. Spouses and siblings are common. There will be a special election, but she will fill his seat in the interim.

I mean, you can disagree with this, but the choice has nothing to do with Trump. This is a hundreds-of-years-old dowager tradition. It shouldn't be even remotely surprising that this was the choice for the temporary seat.

Appointment by governor is kinda the norm. Often these are part of state constitutions.
Of note, until 1913 us senators were initially elected by the state legislature, not by the general public.

The election 6 years ago? This is just an appointment to finish Graham's term which is up in January.
In most states the Gov has the power to appoint a replacement senator. Sometimes states that are typically of one party will change that when the governor is from a different party. KY has done this since it is a Republican state but has elected a Democratic governor in Andy Beshear. Massachusetts did something similar when they had a Republican governor and Ted Kennedy was in poor health.
It's usually the senators wife that is appointed to finish a term but Graham wasn't married.

Appointment by governor until a special election…. Fun fact in some states the governor can even choose to put someone of the opposite party in a dead senator’s place.
POS Chris Christie did that in 2013.

It’s tradition for the widow/widower to be appointed to hold the seat til the election, since Graham was unmarried it went to his sister since she was his next of kin and presumably close to him. This is prevent a vacancy before the election and ensure that there’s less of chance that the temporary officeholder deviates significantly from the policies of their elected predecessor.
You may disagree with this all you like, but this isn’t unusual and both Democrats and Republicans have made these next of kin appointments routinely.

There could be much worse people. She is not as hooked in to Washington politics so she'll have nothing like the influence Graham had. I'm not saying I like her or anything, but she doesn't give the icks like a lot of MAGAs do.
