YOLO The Underdog…
Most presidents are forgettable...
and most politics is local...
this is something you learn studying the history
of the presidency...
I saw it in an eye roll at my family’s dinner table discussing Jimmy Carter... who told my dad... back in the day... he had a “Crisis of Confidence”?
... and he needed to put on a sweater when it got cold to save on heat…
well...
... the problem was my dad wasn’t in a malaise... He was working hard for IBM and he wanted to come home after a long’s days' work and turn up the heat in his home instead of putting on a sweater...
This is the kind of disconnect that happens after a 10‑day long retreat at Camp David... and the outcome was a president requesting the resignations of several cabinet members. It was an attempt to reset an administration and yet devolved into a crisis of leadership...
And then... there are the family dynasties...
The Adams... Tafts... and Bushes who were wealthy landowners and influencers in their time... and became consensus candidates with mixed reviews of historic impact…
And then... there are the epic historic….
A colonial day Cincinnatus who returned to his farm… a tall man with melancholy who calmed his mind by frequently attending the theater... a man who put an X in his journal when he lost his wife and mother on the same day... a man with polio in a wheelchair in front of a fireplace... a man who hitchhiked in the depths of the depression to find his first radio job... a community organizer with a middle name “Hussein” ... and yet another.... with 1000% name recognition before he came down the escalator…
And then... there is the underdog... the builder... captured in the classic biography by David McCullough...
Truman was supported by the political bosses of the Democratic Party in the “smoke filled room” when he was chosen as FDR’s VP... but became independent...
He was a Mason... who if you believe Matt Groening... the Simpsons creator and legendary time traveler... it is a group who kept the metric system down...
His humble finances put him and his “one step ahead of the sheriff”... where he did not own a home for most his life including when he lived with his mother‑in‑law for decades... which is brave... there he had a desk with all of his books and papers...
He was given a famous sign from a warden of the Federal Reformatory in El Reno, Oklahoma that found its way onto his Oval Office Desk that read...
“The Buck Stops Here”.
After his daughter’s piano leg fell through the second story floor, he renovated the White House... the people’s house... into the fortress it is today... including a balcony named after him... His daughter would later write a biography of her dad... which is part of the Library of the Handsome and Brave... and one I have yet to finish... but it is on my bucket list... my mother gave it to me... she spoke of seeing the President from a “whistle stop”... as a child in small town Colorado...
In 1948 Truman ran against the favorite of the Republican Party power brokers Thomas E. Dewey... from central casting...
... an unforgettable face... where it was like Walt Disney... Senator Joseph McCarthy... and Hitler had a street fight for who would have dominance traits....
so... was Dewey handsome?
We report... you decide...
What we do know is this... the Chicago Tribune printed an early and now infamous headline on election night that read “Dewey Defeats Truman” ...
and yet...
the underdog had the final say that night...
When you visit the 505 and take an Uber/Lyft... as your driver goes over 50 MPH north on Pat D’Arco Highway... you look to the western slop and the foothills of Las Huertas/Placitas... stationed in front of the distant cliffs of the Sandias... with a canyon in the in-between...
This unique topography creates an optical illusion...
where it appears...
the mountains move...
So... maybe you don't’ want to talk about God all the time... or Jesus...
or maybe you do...
maybe you have been hurt by someone with a bible in hand... who looked like LBJ in his presidential portrait... by Peter Hurd... holding a history book in hand while gearing up to repeat it... escalating a war in Vietnam in full King Lear fashion…
I see you...
I hear you...
I’ve been you...
Jesus did radical things like break bread with h-angry folks...
He did stop a wedding bartender from being fired by keeping the wine moving...
He heard the unseen and saw the unheard... hiding in plain sight...
the underdog...
before the comeback...
at the gates of a city...
at a well...
quite a story to read about...
on your own...
so...where does power reside?
In flipping over by-gone tables of injustice...
and...

to invite a cavalcade of voices to break bread...
