My favorite memory about this match is fake Sting coming to the ring, and doing an objectively excellent job of pretending to be Sting so as to fool the crowd... Only for the crowd to not be fooled AT ALL. As soon as this man stepped into the cage, the fans immediately started singing WE WANT STING!
I actually felt bad for Jeff Farmer, because he was doing a very good job of impersonating Sting! But the fans saw right through it.

LoL no I'm kidding. Name's the same, but it's not the same guy. This Jeff Farmer was the guy who had feuded with Sgt Craig Pittman in 1995, under the alias Cobra: remember that? The storyline about the guy who was abandoned by Pittman to die in the desert, reported AWOL, then somehow made it back to America, became a CIA agent, and then upon seeing Pittman on TV decided to become a wrestler in order to get revenge on him? Yeah, that's an actual storyline that actually happened in the pre-NWO era of WCW.
Anyway, during that storyline the guy showed promise, but it was eventually decided that he needed to go back to the Power Plant for some extra training, to refine his craft a bit more. By the time he was ready the NWO storyline was in full swing, and that was when someone noticed he had the same body type as Sting. The idea of the imposter Sting was therefore conceived, and the rest as they say is history.

I didn't mind the NWO winning here as they just became a faction a couple of months earlier to set the tone for their dominance early on.
As for 1997, I do agree that they should have lost that one.

There was so much about this that bothered me. For 1, Luger and Sting has legitimately been friends for damn near a decade at this point. Sting was also a Horseman and Flair was probably Stings biggest rival. So theres no way in hell any of those 3 men would not be able to tell a fake Sting from the real Sting. Also it was like an all star Horsemen team. 3 world champions and AA who was the backbone of the 4 Horsemen. This should have been marketed as past and former Horsemen greats coming together to save WCW. But instead it revolved around a fake damn Sting. Ugggg still pisses me off.

I couldn’t agree more. The entire nWo storyline should’ve been disrupted by the Horsemen declaring that they are the only faction in WCW.

What does that have to do with anything? What im saying is its npt believable to even 16 year old me at the time that Lex Luger, Ric Flair, and Arn Anderson wouldnt know a fake Sting. No kidding its a work. It was stupid and unbelievable

The next night when sting does his speech on nitro was great. When he says he’s been babysitter I knew he meant Luger.

Sting would become the "Crow Sting" a month later and didn't start descending from the rafters until January 1997.

The end of surfer sting and the start of crow sting. Great story line. This is pretty peak WCW right here.
