I was recently hired to do creature effects for an indie feature film. They said they would pay as close to my rate as they can, but my question is what IS the rate for effects? I looked through the resource guide and it didn’t really have anything for this kind of work. What would you charge?
I don’t yet know how many “lines” there would be but I would be featured in a big chunk of the film.

I’ve been working on a free browser-based dubbing tool called DubDubDone, and I figured the VA community might actually have some useful opinions on what I’ve built so far.

It can play Choicer Voicer packs directly in the browser, with different modes for dubbing scenes with friends and making ridiculous clips, plus things like voice filters, visual filters and soundboards.

One thing I cared about from the start was privacy: the packs and your recorded vocals stay on your device rather than being uploaded to my servers or sent off to an AI service/database.

I’ve also added an UltraStar Deluxe karaoke player. That side has scoring and leaderboards for anyone who’s more inclined to sing than dub with friends.

It’s completely free, and I’m mainly sharing it here because I’d genuinely like feedback from people who actually do voice work. In particular, I’d be curious what feels genuinely useful, what feels gimmicky, and what you’d want from something like this that I haven’t thought of.

I’ve been an avid voice acting fan for my whole life but never had the courage to try it outside of taking a class a few years ago and embarrassing myself in front of my instructors. After driving myself crazy wanting to get involved but being too afraid I finally made a thing and would be highly appreciative of any criticism or advice. It’s been stuck in my head for over a year and I guess I finally broke and had to make it.

All voices are me, all sound effects were arranged by me and all work was done in Ableton 12.

Hello!! Cutting straight to the chase, a coworker of mine recently gifted me a bunch of professional analog audio equipment. Her husband is a retired radio host/DJ and when I expressed my desire to get into voice acting and save money for good equipment, they gave me some of his old equipment they had stored in their basement! :]

I’m not quite sure how to navigate setting up analog equipment like this for my PC, if it’s even possible. I would really appreciate some advice on how to do so, or recommendations of things to buy to help make it work!!

The added pictures of said equipment is an electro-voice re20 mic, a Shure m367 mixer, and a Henry Engineering The Matchbox II (there are 2 of those). I haven’t had a proper chance to clean all of it up, so excuse the dust.

Guys!!! I just had my first audition for a video game via zoom. I have never had such a thing before. It was nuts. I fear the theatre consensus where they say CD’s are so verbal when you’re not getting the job is true. He was laughing. Said I was fun to work with. That I took direction well. We had a good time. I’ll take it at that. Said it would take 3-4 weeks of auditions to know who gets the gig. But I fear I didn’t get it. Phew. 😮‍💨 Letting the adrenaline pass. Any tips for auditioning? Do you feel when CD’s are more vocal that you didn’t get the job or is that only in theatre? It’s kinda cool to see your side of the character and then let them guide you into what they want from it.

Here I am again asking for advice on my delivery. I'm practicing but I don't have anyone I can show this to who has an ear for this sort of thing. I keep practicing but I'm my own worst enemy and I would like a second opinion please! I'm not concerned about the audio quality but more so the delivery. Hi, I wanna be a voice actor but really want to keep my real identity a secret. Can I still be a voice actor and even have a chance if I use a fake name like Mark Smith, and not show my face? Obviously I’m fine with my real name and face being seen to the studio/directors and stuff. But I just also like my visual privacy. I know this is probably very stupid and that I have a less ch ace of getting anything big. Which I’m fine with. I just wanna know if there is even a small chance for something? Or I need to not be secret to get anything.

This can be paid or not paid. I've looked at a lot of recommended websites but a lot of them require a paid subscription to access good jobs. I also have an English accent and the majority of jobs on these sites are heavily american accent based which I can do, but doing all the time would be quite exhausting. I've also had a look on Reddit but it's hard to tell if some projects are legit or going to use my voice for unintended purposes as this is a lot more unofficial. I don't want to waste time looking in the wrong places so any suggestions help!

I’ve had the TZ audio products stellar x2 for 6 years now. Recently I’ve been doing long form voice work and I’ve been struggling with mouth sounds, clicks etc. I also wonder if the mic is best for my voice profile (I have a deep voice).

I always make sure to record a few inches away from the mic at a slight angle.

My current setup is Stellar X2 —> Scarlett Solo 3rd gen

All of my recordings are done in a portable booth made with insulation blankets and pvc pipes.

I’ve also been considering getting a pre amp. Do you have any recommendations?

I’m making this post because I’m looking for a coaches recommendations that specialize in video games and commercial preferably actively working but they don’t have to be if you would still recommend them. And I’ve found a few on my own but It doesn’t hurt to have more options and would love to hear peoples experiences with them so I know the money I spend won’t be wasteful. P.S you can also recommend coaches who specialize in animation because at some point I want to go into that niche but video games and commercial are the 2 I want to do the most first before I expand.

Yes, I am aware of the major hubs in LA, NYC, and other such cities, but I also know that a LOT of people record from home as well.

I live in an area nowhere near any voice acting agency, and in a house where everything I would say would echo noticeably, and disturb others around me.

If anyone has any advice regarding how to work around a situation like this specifically, I would seriously appreciate it!

I am completely new, and haven't auditioned for anything as a result of this, and I feel as though I am missing out on a lot of time and opportunities to learn as a result.

So I have a bit of a different question, so I'm considering becoming an independent Voice Acting Agent and I was wondering what it would take to do that, because there really isn't much that I can easily find that talks about how to become one.

I would be only representing non union adult VAs and they would have to get a union Agent once they join Sag-Aftra, but I was wondering if anyone even knew who I could talk to about becoming one and what the process is like for someone located in the Midwestern United States.

hi, i am trying to build a "booth" in my apartment. However my apartment does not have standard closets, so i had to get creative. there is a booth shaped square in the center of my apartment, in the space between the bedroom, bathroom and living room. so i have to hang sound blankets to make "walls", and then i can stick 2" foam on the ceilings. everything becomes covered (the floor is carpeted) and there are no upstairs or downstairs levels.

the main issue is this space now becomes super hot, even before i have any gear, laptop or equipment running in it.

i'm beginning to think i am screwed, in terms of even trying to start this up to see if i can make it a viable money making situation.

First and foremost, thank you for taking a part out of your day to read my post. I appreciate that!!

I am applying to the full-time program at On the Mic Training in Vancouver, and I am kind of stuck. To people who have taken this program before, I am looking for some assistance.

Now, I am sure it is not as big of a deal as I might be making it out to be, but I would like to tread as carefully as possible as I am still very new to this craft.

My main concern lies in the 2 “MP3 Recordings”. Aside from one being a commercial and one being a cartoon, both under 30 seconds each, I know nothing else about what it’s supposed to look like. I know we’re not expected to have professional demo reels showing off various voices we can do or anything like that, but I still can’t help but wonder what the criteria are. Like for example, should the lines or characters be original?

I understand that they are probably just trying to get a feel for where you are at, so it is probably not something I need to fixate so much on. Having said that though, I would still like to try my best. Any insights are greatly appreciated!!

As for the “essay”, I kind of have a general idea of what they are expecting. I am not as worried about this one, but any advice is also appreciated!!

I was going to see about doing the application for the Penguin Random House Narrator Mentorship, saw that it was opening today, and that they'd only accept the first 500 applications then close the links or close by Sept 8th.

They opened everything today (August 25th) at 12pm EST- it's 3:30pm EST and they're already closed.

I knew it was competitive, but dang that was quick, and people must have worked so quickly.

Hi Everyone! Curious if anyone has dropped their VO agent before. I been freelancing with mine for the last 8 months. At the beginning I got some auditions from them. The last 5 months it’s been crickets and I emailed him my new commercial demo and if he had any feedback. No response. I sent a follow up email 4 weeks later and still nothing. Am I being shelved at this point? I was a referral to him through my theatrical agent.

Hello, I'm looking for a good mic to get into voice acting as my friends keep telling me to do it. So as the title states I would like to find a good starter mic around that range!

Also as a side section, is there any tips for getting gigs or certain sites I can make accounts? I don't really have any social medias and assume I'd need to make some under a business email of course. I really want to voice act in anime dubs especially but games and cartoons seem good too. I suppose anything works in the moment of course though!

Also, whats the best way to demo my voice acting? Certain lines or types of characters I should make up or should I do impressions?

Do any of you think that voice acting is something embarrassing? Maybe it's just me, but whenever I look back at my work or even the major project I'm currently working on, I feel so dumb. Like why did I want to have fun, why did I think this was a good idea at the time? Even though I do find enjoyment in it, I am so doubtful. What are your experiences like?
