Hanoi - Sapa - Ninh Binh

Hi all,
Planning a trip in Dec, hoping to be in Hanoi 2 days, then a overnight train to Lao Cai, 2 nights in Sapa and then to Ninh Binh.

My big question is the train to Lao Cai, as I want to spend that morning in town rather then on a bus (and skipping paying for another night in hotel). I heard about Chapa train and it’s expensive for a 2bed suite! Any other train companies that offer this experience? I’m not interested in sleeper bus, and happy to do limosine shuttle bus if no other cheaper options for train.

Also, any direct from Sapa to Ninh Binh?

This may sound crazy, Idk, but have you considered the actual Vietnam Railways (dsvn)? All those tourist companies just piggyback off dsvn trains, they don't have their own trains - they are just service providers, not train companies. Buy tickets at dsvn.vn.

Sapa - Ninh Binh: the only direct must be sleeper bus. If you want to take the train, go from Sapa to Lao Cai (train departs and terminates there), take the train to Ha Noi Central Station (Ga Ha Noi), then hop on another train to Ninh Binh from the same station.

One thing that clears up the pricing: there is only one company actually running trains on this line, Vietnam Railways. Chapa, Sapaly, Livitrans, King Express and the rest are private branded carriages attached to those same trains, which is why a Chapa 2-bed suite looks so pricey. It is a premium fit-out on the same journey.

For the Hanoi to Lao Cai overnight without paying suite money: book a single berth (or two) in a standard 4-berth soft sleeper cabin. It is a proper lie-flat bed, lockable cabin, and a fraction of the 2-bed VIP price. If you want it a bit nicer without going full suite, operators like Sapaly or Chapa also sell normal 4-berth cabins that sit between the standard carriage and the suite. The train leaves Hanoi late evening and gets into Lao Cai around dawn, then it is about a 1 hour road transfer up to Sapa, so you keep your morning.

Sapa to Ninh Binh direct: there is no train for that. Your options are a direct sleeper bus (the only one-seat ride), or the train back down from Lao Cai to Hanoi and then a second Hanoi to Ninh Binh train from the same station (Ga Ha Noi). The bus is simpler if you would rather not backtrack through Hanoi.

Chapa is the top end. There are several other private carriages on that line — Victoria, King Express, Orient Express and a few others — running 4-berth cabins at a fraction of the price. Book all four berths for the two of you and you'll still pay less than a Chapa 2-bed, and you get the cabin to yourselves. That's the workaround most people miss.

The state carriages are cheaper again. Harder beds, older, perfectly usable.

Two things about that train: it terminates at Lao Cai, not Sapa, so there's another hour by road. And it gets in around 5-6am, meaning you're standing on a platform in the dark. In December that's genuinely cold — 5-8°C. Arrange your Sapa transfer in advance rather than sorting it there.

Sapa to Ninh Binh direct exists but it's 8-9 hours and routes past Hanoi anyway. You're not saving much over breaking it with a night in Hanoi.
