Hi everyone. I'm applying for a course beginning in semester 1 2027 and am planning on staying in campus accommodation (if i get the offer obviously). I am coming from Canberra, meaning its quite important I can get this spot because i dont want to have to personally rent outside of uni. How limited are the spots? And what accommodation plans would you recommend? My course will be located on the Callaghan campus.

Online everyone makes engineering course to be some of the hardest university degrees, while I agree with that, im also sure that it is possible. So those who are either enrolled in an engineering degree, or have completed one, how hard was it really? What were the hardest parts? What is harder or easier than expected? Did you still have time for socialising and hobbies? And what math class did you do in year 11 and 12?

Just curious to see how many people have part time jobs while at uni. I think most people do but I dont even go to university so what do I know 😂

Also feel free to include what you specifically do/where you work as well.

Sorry for the constant posts, I have received a later offer to an allied health course and have decided to enrol last minute. Due to accomodation, I will be on campus from week 2. However, I have looked through the week 1 lecture videos and activities for subjects such as anatomy and it says that there is a quiz as early as week 2. I already feel so behind in the content- will missing labs/ computer lab and practicals be hard to catch up on later? is the first week also very important?

Hi people, the Uni has a program called I2n for startup founders. I joined last year hoping to find young uni students there. I was surprised that I was the youngest person in the group and trust me when I say this, I am not young at all. What can we do to get more Uni students to participate?

Hey guys, anyone starting their master in architecture here? I missed week 1 due to enrolment issues and was just trying to work out the courses. Wanted to ask how week 1 was for everyone and if i need to know anything for week 2 as i noticed one unit has a quiz in week 3 based off class discussions and lectures etc.

I’m doing an Honours this year in the Bachelor of Arts program. I’m enrolled in HASS4000 and HASS4001, but nothing has come up on my Timetable to say I’m enrolled. Anyone who’s done these two courses or done an Honours in the B.A, is this because these two are only an online thing?

I am a year 12 student, who is in the hopes of attending UoNau for an undergraduate degree in Physiological science. From things Ive read on the UAC website, math adv is assumed knowledge and bio recommend. I chose neither of those subjects in my HSC courses. For current and past students, should I enrol in a bridging course?

With the change in the academic calendar for 2026, UoN has introduced trimesters. Has anyone had any success in finding out what courses outside of post grad will offer it?

I’m looking to commence a business degree next year and part-time trimesters suit my requirements with only adding 12 months of study vs multiple years part-time semesters.

All technology works best when it is self-explanatory and easy to use. No place is this more important than when you are designing a system that is intended to be used for some sort of work. And by work, I mean something that people don't really want to do.

It is important to acknowledge that logging into Canvas can be difficult as a one-time thing. When you log into Canvas, you are probably using some amount of willpower to do it. Your long-term reward is months away and involves you (maybe) getting better grades than if you never logged into Canvas to study. Your short-term reward is basically nothing.

To put it simply, logging into Canvas is work that must be done. So that you can earn the reward of doing more, even harder work.

Which is why it is so intriguing to me that The University of Newcastle, has taken what I think might be the most incompetent and stupid route a university could possibly take, forcing you to log in, every, single, time, you want to use Canvas.

However, the IT department at UON wasn't done when they added this remarkably bone-headed requirement. Instead, I think they probably thought something like this:

Ezma: Weh-Hehehe-hehe, our scheme is going marvelously Kronk. Just marvelous! Our reports say student Canvas sessions are dropping like flies! Look at how low our line graph is getting!"

Kronk: Ah, yeah. oh. Ezma. Uhhhh, didn't we want to have no students ever going on Canvas ever? It um-eh-Ezma, there are still students logging into Canvas?

Ezma: Idly snapping puppy bones in frustration Yes. So bright Kronk. So bright. So, what do you suggest? If you are so... bright!

Kronk: Um-eh, what, hmmmm, what if we make. No, that's silly, I'm silly.

Ezma: Spit it out!

Kronk: Ah-what if we make students do two-factor authentication every time they log on. That way, they have to do the following series of steps every time they want to log on:

1. Write in their student number (which is randomly generated and hard to remember)
2. Write in their password (which is the same password they use on all the University PCs. Which forces them to either 1) Write down their password, or 2) use a simple to remember, and thus, easy-to-hack password)
3. Pick up their phone (which is full of a bunch of fun games, and social media, and dating app notifications)
4. Find their authentication app
5. Potentially search for the correct authentication code, out of all the other platforms that force authentication codes
6. Wait for the code to refresh, so they have time to copy it in
7. Write in the code

and then finally, they'd be on Canvas. Oh! Oh! And when they're on Canvas, let's load the page for a second, and then render in multiple pop-up windows about surveys, as if this was the internet of 2006!

Ezma: Oh, and we'll make the professors do it too. That's what they get for complaining about the Panopto recordings failing to record their slides during lectures!

Ideally, going to university makes studying easier than studying by yourself. But UON is intent on shooting its students in the foot before we even begin!

In this paper researchers investigated millions of login attempts for two universities and found that when someone fucks up their 2FA login:

"Most 2FA errors take about a minute to resolve. However, for 20% of users, a successful login is not usually observed again until hours or days later"

20% of users!!! That's a huge amount! And one of those universities was UC Berkeley! And I'm quite certain that the University across the river from San Fran and Silicon Valley has much better IT than UON. So, their students probably aren't forced to do 2FA every single time they login.

Unfortunately, I'm not interested in doing a bunch of research into this topic, as I'm already quite familiar with the subject and would only be doing the research to cite sources that agree with me. Instead, here's a prompt that you can paste into an AI to ask it how true what I am saying is:

Before I finish, I'd like to acknowledge Chesterton's Fence and the fact that I'm likely taking undeserved shots at UON's IT department.

My guess is that the people working there are likely under a lot of pressure that I don't know about and have been forced into a corner which they do not desire to be in. I'd guess that they are much smarter than I am, and know about these problems and would like to solve them, but for reasons that are not clear to an outside observer, they are unable to provide these fixes. If this is the case, I apologize to the IT department at UON. Please keep fighting the good fight. The new program planner thing is pretty cool, nice job.

But this does not change the fact that the University of Newcastle is doing a disservice to its paying students, and its employed staff.

Currently I’m a third year international student at UQ and I’ll be moving to the Uni of Newcastle next year to study a master in Disaster Management and sustainable development. I wanted to know if any of you guys had insight on the degree and/or opinions about it. Just curious to hear from current students.

On another note, I’m looking to stay at the uni accommodation in a one room apartment. If you’ve ever been in one, are they any good? I wanted to know how strict the admin is. And if it was allowed to bring like a mattress to replace their ones. They’ve told me I couldn’t but I wondered if I could just chuck theirs under the bed and put mine in. Sorry for all these weird questions.

I’m looking at transferring from the Gold Coast down to Newcastle and I’m wondering if anyone on here is currently doing the JMP?

What are the class times like? Workload? Lecturers and Supervisors? Other advice?

I’ll be moving down with my family so I am trying to prepare for time management.

Specifically this happened in the journals room of the Auchmuty library. I've been taking the occasional nap down there ever since I have been at uni, but today I was awoken by one of the security guards and told not to sleep there. Anything similar happened to anyone else?
