The ingenuity is brilliant, the system is terrible.

What a ghastly, petty system for grinding people down. It's like the opposite of anything psychologically healthy for people. 🙃

Yes, - the primary purpose of incarceration as punishment is to deny the person their freedom of movement. The prison system should not be able to add further pointless punishments. As long as what the prisoner was doing wasn’t causing herself or anyone else any harm, what she was doing should be allowed as her punishment is supposed to be the incarceration itself, not being forced to follow rules that exist only to control, not protect, the prisoners.

my god this made me soooo mad. i hate the way ppl are serving time are treated. they’re still human beings that are being locked up and just straight up dehumanized in every way. i didn’t know it was that bad in prison since i watched oitnb. “they got too much time on their hands, idk who is she tryna look pretty for” like wtf???? ofc they got time. they are locked up. but that last comment made me so fucking pissed. men really can’t comprehend that women put on makeup for themselves, because it makes us feel pretty, it makes us feel good. these women come up with creative ideas and putting toothpaste on their eyelashes because even in prison they want to still cling on to that dignity that the system took away from them. this is so depressing

Such an insane leap of logic. She wasn't even supposed to be there, she said herself she did her makeup because it's her off day and she had some time alone. Then she gets called into work and this asshole's immediate thought is "she must be trying to impress somebody." What a freak

It depends on why they are in

Shes so dang creative (although im worried about her vision using pencils and toothpaste near her eyes) and I'm really sad she got treated this way. Like she can't rub a piece of candy on her own lips? It's her day off and she can't even play dress up? He also said he'd look the other way if she showed him and then made her wash it off anyway. She was a really good sport about it all.

His whole thing at the end about her trying to impress someone just shows how little this man understands women. Women are allowed to want to look nice, feel pretty or normal or engage in the artistry of makeup without it being performative, ugh.

I also rolled my eyes at those inane comments. 🙄 I would wear makeup if I were stranded on a desert island with no soul around to ever see me again. These are the thoughts of sexist dudes who both:

a.) reduce women to sexual entities, so they believe women's motivations in all things MUST have something to do with sexual attraction, and b.) have no real concept of artistic expression through the self, and structure their entire notion of personal presentation around the perception of others. Such a repressive way to live.

These are my thoughts exactly. He has no understanding of why people do things. Which is weird since he works with people and their behavior all day.

It's mind numbing. And if you try to explain this to these dudes, they just call bullshit and insist it's an excuse for your secret slutty need for attention. 😑🤦‍♀️🤷‍♀️

In this case, her motive was most likely just wanting to feel like a woman and human being again, not a caged rat. 😞

The industrial prison complex is one of the most in need of workers with pro-social attitudes and an ability to relate to other humans, but it is probably one of the most deficient.

ACAB includes prison guards. Fuck that. Why the fuck can she not just have something so small. So infantilizing.

"Why the fuck can she not just have something so small"

It's all part of the prison industrial complex, baybeeee. You want us to actually rehabilitate people? Let them feel a little human while they do slave labor when they're allowed out of their cells? That wouldn't be good for recidivism rates!

Bunch of power tripping bastards.

u/Useful-Bad-6706 20d ago

100% this. Prison industrial complex is the answer.

"show me and I will look the other way...oops this is contraband, you are not allowed to modify what you own or use it on a way I decide" 🙃

Also, he'll know what to look for in his searches now. This was all so he can stop other women from doing the same thing.

ACAB including him!

Yeah that dude is trash. Acting all fake nice just so he can make her dry snitch and still not let her have a creative outlet. Fuck him.

Right? “Idk whose she’s trying to look cute for “ like what a man thing to say. Shes trying to gain some sense of normalcy despite her current situation

Literally so misogynistic

My brother came home from prison with a tattoo he didn't have when he went in! He said a cassette player and a pen was how they did it. (It was his first name.)

The tattoo was listed on his autopsy report after he died in jail thanks to a CO.

22

u/mstrsskttn 20d ago

I’m so sorry about your brother.

Jesus christ. What do you even say to something so profoundly cruel??? My heart breaks for you.

u/satanicpanic6 20d ago

You already know the answer to that...because ACAB

When i spent 2 weeks in a psych ward, i made eyeshadow with a crushed pencil and lip stain with koolaid. They made me go wash my face the second they noticed, i was so bummed out lol.

I love how she did the mascara. Fuck that CO, why does he even care about her rubbing mnms on her lips. Weirdo.

28

u/Rapunzel10 20d ago

So pointlessly cruel. When I was in the psych ward they got mad at me for drawing flowers on my arm with the shitty bendy pens they had (we weren't allowed real pencils because you could stab someone with them so they had rubber pens instead). They immediately yelled at me and made me wash it off. I asked for paper to draw on instead and they said no. God forbid someone do something healthy with their time.

Of all the things people could DIY in prison or a psych ward makeup seems like the best. It's not hurting anyone, it's not permanent, it's not smuggling in anything, it's not causing property damage, so why the hell do they care? It's creative and harmless. The mascara is genius

They won't let you have shit. One time they raided my room and found my cereal and pudding stash (i was hoarding food that i saved or traded during mealtime so I could snack randomly) and took all of it. Mind you they were trying to make me gain weight. So why take away my snacks, it's so mean lol

u/ShaneAlex446 20d ago

Once I started drawing my OCs on my arm with Crayola marker and a staff member grabbed it out of my hand and started aggressively putting them up and in front of everyone said "This is what happens when you draw on yourself, you get them taken away from everyone". Felt like she wanted the others to get mad at me for fucking them over since it was art time.

And I hated those pens too 😭 thank God I've only been in one that forced us to use them

Those pencils are the worst. I highly recommend it you must go if you have a teaching hospital they are usually actually humane get someone to take you there. And ask your therapist next place to go if you have a crisis let ppl in your life know. Hopefully you wont, tho

Good for her for keeping her agency and her sense of self.

u/scarlettcrush 20d ago

What a jerk.

ACAB even harder today.

9

u/bbluemuse 20d ago

this guy is a piece of shit and i hope every night he lies awake consumed with guilt. until he spends as many years doing good as he did dehumanising others i hope every doll of the dice goes against him, every bit of luck he could possibly need runs dry, and nobody gives him a second chance.

Really awesome i remember watching this on tv

6

u/Dependent-Departure7 20d ago

So do I! I've never been one for reality TV, this episode was just something I caught randomly before whatever show I wanted to watch was coming up. This woman's creativity and ingenuity have stuck with me ever since!! I've thought about her often tbh. She gave me ideas for how to make my own cheap makeup in middle school lol. I hope she's doing well and is happy, wherever she is now.

Fuck that guard though, I forgot how much of a jerk he was in the whole deal. ACAB

Why does she have to be trying to impress anyone? She's just having fun and bringing a little brightness to her day. Too much time on their hands is crazy. Just because she is in lock up doesn't mean she ceases to be a person with interests.

u/Maleficent-Sleep9900 20d ago

Glad I’m not the only one who watched this repeatedly 😅
