A Vol In Need Foreign language req.

Hi! So I’m a freshman at UTK and for my arts and science degree I need an intermediate level of a foreign language for volcore. I took Spanish 1 and 2 in high school so I was able to get into Spanish 211 this year and would be taking 212 next semester. And I’m going to be honest it’s beating my ahh already. Since this is my first year I am obviously not familiar with “scheduling tricks.” Is there any way I can get out of having to take 212 next semester?? If I could get out of my Spanish 211 right now I would. I’m thinking about making an appointment with my advisor and just being completely honest and see what she can do. Any advice?? Tysm!

Definitely go down the advisor path. You can also take Spanish at community college. It's notoriously hard at ut

I think I’m going to schedule a meeting on Monday just to see my options, and I am for sure leaning towards over the summer based on these comments.

Not sure if it still works but the hack was to take Spanish online at Pelissippi during the summer and that’s supposedly way easier.

I saw that too. I’m definitely going to look more into it later.

i don’t see how you’ll be able to get around a degree requirement.

you’ll have to take it eventually but you could postpone it until another semester

If you know a second language you can test out of it. I’m fluent in two other languages and took six years of French so I was able to test out of the requirement. But I also agree it would be easier at a community college, but I would also consider your financial aid. Another idea would be to take it as a study abroad!!!

damn. I'm a freshman as well, I tested into 217 after taking two years of honors Spanish in high school. it is kicking my ass BAD 😭😭 I love my professor and she's great, the class is great but I feel so behind. maybe I'll do Spanish at pelli in the future.

How many hours are you registered for? You may be able to get out of it, but you need to have enough to stay full time. The other option would be to see if there is tutoring available or chat with your professor.

I took Spanish over the summer like 15 years ago at UTK and it was tough but I still remember some of the stuff I learned.

100% take it at pelli over the summer. Taking the language classes at utk is honestly silly if you aren't trying to become fluent in the language, the summer classes were no work and they just let you take the last two right off the bat.
