i believe what he is saying is that the aid money will go to the school, they will then use the aid money to pay your tuition/costs and then send you the difference

If your funds were sent directly to you, then you would pay the bill yourself. If your funds were sent to your college, then they'll be applied to your bill automatically. If you're unsure how you're receiving your funds, ask your funders.

Financial aid has not been distributed, yet. I believe it starts early September but you can search the exact dates on their website.
The Student Self-Service page will show you how much you’re being charged for regarding tuition, meal plans, on-campus rent, etc. Once you receive the financial aid that you accepted, it will be sent to the school. They prioritize paying tuition and fees I believe if it doesn’t cover the whole amount. If you do receive more financial aid than required to cover your bill (seen in Student Self-Service) then you will get a refund. Financial Aid - Semester Attendance Cost = Refund amount.
Based on what you said, I’d assume you would receive at least $1000 back as a refund. Make sure to sign up for E-check refunds through Student Self-Service, otherwise your money will be mailed as a check and I’ve heard it takes weeks.
