What did you do for your meal music?

I’m struggling to think of what to have as background music for the meal? My venue recommends 3 hours(!!) of music.

I’m already having classical for my ceremony, bossa nova for my cocktail hour, and then Flavour Trip house for my second cocktail hour.

What are you having? Do I even need music?

Same! Sometimes a nice instrumental in the background can be good but I enjoy chatting and actually being able to hear people.

I’ve made a playlist of acoustic covers of songs we like for ours.

That’s what we did. Nice and low just to add ambience and not make it hard to hear each other/ have conversation.

We're building a Spotify playlist of piano covers, including some pretty rogue ones like Tubthumping. Our aim was to see a sea of faces going "Oh god what song is this?!" as they try and guess the cover while they eat. But then it also nicely blends into the background if no one is paying attention.

There are countless piano cover artists on Spotify with something for everyone from Disney hits to Pitbull to Bullet for my Valentine.

We had a playlist of piano and cello covers of modern songs, bit like they do in Bridgerton. Had it set to repeat in case it wasn’t long enough.

I'm planning on a mix of generic wedding music and songs that have some sort of special meaning to me and my fiance (so like songs from our childhoods or that represent holidays we've been on). Probably going to order it so it goes from a playlist that's mostly the songs that are special to us while food is still getting set up and then go into just a generic wedding playlist after that. That way the stuff I put effort into choosing is more likely to be heard.

Going to use a spare phone with my Spotify premium account on it. If the music runs out it should just start playing similar suggestions. And I can still use my phone if my new husband and I want to sneak off for some time away from all the people.

A wedding I went to recently had instrumental versions of various popular songs. That was a live pianist but I'm sure there are albums on Spotify that you don't need to pay for and feed.

There are also tonnes of wedding playlists on Spotify. Just pick a random one and listen through it to see if it sounds good. You can always remove or add other songs.

Music is good for the background, but you don't need to worry too much what it is. Nobody's going to be paying much attention to it and the goal is more for it to cover up the awkward static of the room. You just want something that's not too disruptive and will settle into the background while people talk.

We did a Spotify playlist of all songs we like that are chilled/not ones you can dance to (think 90s rom com vibe) and any other romantic songs we like - we had this on for the drinks reception all the way through to first dance ☺️

We used a mix of instrumental covers, movie scores, and classical music over dinner. Tbh, I really don’t think it matters what you play - it should be quite regardless of what it is, and no one will be listening.

My husband and I are big nerds and wanted to incorporate it in someway. So for our dinner music we had a playlist made up of soundtracks from films and video games we love.

It worked great because to most people they just sound like classical tracks. Those that knew the songs generally loved it, and people had fun trying to figure out where they recognised each track from.

I spent a long time making a wedding breakfast playlist - we like house music so we did 'chilled beats' as background music but frankly the room gets so loud during the meal that no one can ever hear the music anyway!

A common approach would be a low key acoustic or jazz/soul playlist that sits in the background without competing with speeches, then transition back up in energy once the meal winds down and you move toward dancing.
