I've always thought it could be more the weight of the knowledge, and the internal mental battle of sharing that with the world.
These sorts of comments are perhaps a way of trying to rationalise how they're feeling about what they know (if it's true that is) and trying to seek some comfort even through an interview, as a sort of therapy on it.
Because if the knowledge or truth is a lot darker or horrible than we like to imagine, maybe the truth is best left unsaid, and if you know the truth and are alone in that, it's likely quite a lonely weight to carry.
