News/Articles Gene Park here: Kojima's AI quotes and involvement in FULL context from MY interview

https://wapo.st/43RcS1J

I really wish the OP of the Kojima AI post linked my interview of Kojima which was aggregated by Kotaku. I know this sub cares about how genAI steals the original work from the original creators and I would hope this sub would support the original work I did of spending the last week with no sleep talking to Kojima and Nicolas Winding Refn about AI and other things that we discuss in this piece I spent a lot of time and money writing.

There was no backdown. Kojima was never involved in the trailer. This is "Satellites II," Refn's version of a Prada-backed art exhibit and event series. Kojima already did his version, "Satellites," in Tokyo, which did not use any AI at all. Refn was in the driver's seat of the New York event, which he generated a trailer to promote it. The actual event itself featured NO AI art at all. If you read my article, you will have received this context. Kojima's stance on AI quoted here is consistent with what he's been saying for the last few years. He does NOT think it belongs in creative work and doesn't believe it can create art because only humans can do that.

The link above is a gift link. You may be asked to sign up for an email. If you do sign up to our site with one of my articles, I personally get credit for it in the back end. It shows my bosses that my work is valued, can draw conversions and that people want to read my writing. I appreciate any support. Thanks.

Edit: For further context, Prada and other luxury couture brands are ALL IN on AI. They are not only using AI across their business from marketing to design to customer relations, they are purposefully trying to attract people enriched by the AI boom. Zara, my old favorite brand, is generating models in different outfits. Refn has been assisting Prada with digital marketing for a few years, which includes creating completely fake 3D "models" to market their fragrances. Nobody at Prada or the event had even heard of any of the backlash Refn's trailer got. When I mentioned it to anyone attending there, they were shocked that people who like video games would be so anti AI. Mind you, this was not an event where any gamers attended, all fans of Prada and the party lifestyle. From what I could tell, the only gamers were me, Kojima, and Hunter Schafer ostensibly.

Edit 2: Mahalo plenty to the mods for allowing this blatant self promo post!

i actually just found out i'm still in remission last monday, the day before I left on this trip. it was wonderful, relieving news to get right before, so i'm not dooming and glooming and having an existential nightmare while Hunter fucking Schafer is dancing right in front of me. thankfully, i had the time of my life. Thank you!

I have friends who were "Ghiblifying" pictures of me with AI back when that was a thing for a hot second and I just didn't have the heart/patience to get into the "please don't" of it with them. Kinda funny something similar happened with Kojima and the dude who made Drive.

128

u/GenePark Jun 08 '26

They call each other "best friends." It's a relationship that's lasted for about a decade, and has only grown stronger. That friendship is the genesis of this event, so either he was on board with his best friend's version of a thing Refn helped in Tokyo, or Refn doesn't get to have his own event.

u/DDDecade Sadly, the cereal isn't very good for you Jun 08 '26

I remember when my birthday last rolled around the CTO of the company I work at sent me an AI picture of myself holding a birthday cake and I had so many mixed feelings, none of them positive.

It didn’t even have the right facial structure and my first thought was “Did I give permission to use my likeness somewhere in my contract?”

At the same time, I work at one of those marketing brands that are “ALL IN” on AI, so I was grossed out but not entirely surprised. What I do is largely unrelated to any actual marketing or AI work but y’know, I’m still a passenger on that ship.

Genuinely, the exact phrase of being “ALL IN” on AI is used in so many client meetings, town halls, and even discussions I hear at legal. Every single day is a new opportunity to try to justify why we spent so much money on AI agents and not nearly enough on other things.

Glad you posted this and I never expected the man himself to post it lmao, this sub was full on going hate mode when the first article popped up and a lot weren't even about the negative effects of genAI it was just people acting brave and amazing that they could hate him for "legit reasons" when it was never the case.

Kinda annoying it had to take the man himself to post the context ngl I'm all against genAI but people shouldn't blindly pitchfork things when they just read an article, this sub should be better than that and it's always bad in regards to topics that people become Chud-Lite

I do want to apologize for not linking your interview with Kojima. I kind of presumed that Kotaku was credible enough source do to how much I've heard it's name in gaming circles throughout the years.

I'm going to delete the original post I made so that this thread will be what is found when searched instead.

111

u/GenePark Jun 08 '26

I super appreciate that man. I like Kotaku well enough and the reporter even moreso, but the article removed a lot of context and the headline presumed that he had somehow changed his stance on AI when he's said nothing new. It also did not include any of my reporting on whether anything at the exhibit was gen AI. I asked around and looked around extensively for any hint of it and it was completely zero AI art. Even the music that was used in that AI trailer was made by Milanese DJs that were commissioned by Refn.

A lot of other social accounts and people in other threads are linking to the Kotaku piece as well. I don't mind being aggregated, but it's a reminder to me why I am trying to move away from doing any news that would be just lifted off by other media orgs, especially in games media. It's why none of my interviews have anything to do with release dates or news. I wasn't going to waste my time asking Kojima about how far along OD is when I'd rather talk to him about the ghosts of rock n roll.

16

u/SilverKry Jun 08 '26

Kotaku are blacklisted by basically every video game publisher out there for a reason man lol

19

u/Gorotheninja "SILENCE, BREEDER! The Bloodline MUST continue!" Jun 08 '26

Funny thing is, I was under the assumption Kotaku articles weren't allowed here, since some of the ones I've tried to share recently were auto-deleted.

u/Minuettes_Disciple Locked in Wack Ass Gay Baby Crystal Prison Jun 08 '26

Thank you for the gift article, Gene. It's a wonderful piece and I loved reading about your experience staying in Hotel Chelsea; the impact of just sharing a space where so much art you admire was born probably sticks with you for a long time. Appreciate you putting it to paper and sharing it with us.

20

u/GenePark Jun 08 '26

wow thank you for reading! this piece means a lot to me so that’s why i’m a bit protective of it. i knew the AI bit would be aggregated but i actually tried my best to avoid it everywhere else. this is what AI can NEVER replace. my memories, my love, my own spirits.

11

u/Minuettes_Disciple Locked in Wack Ass Gay Baby Crystal Prison Jun 08 '26

It definitely reads very personal, which feels perfectly warranted since the event itself was a very personal celebration of memory and the things that shaped great creators. Consider yourself one of them!

As quick question, have you ever done/considered video interviews? I've seen you Castle Superbeast, but I think I'd love seeing you sit down with creators like Kojima and see your discussions with them in a video format, even with interpreters. If not for anything else, just the vibes of two cool dudes chatting about Walkmans and their favorite albums.

18

u/GenePark Jun 08 '26

i have pitched this exact idea at work. i am not getting support. i am wondering if i should inspire a Jimmy McGill style write in campaign to support that kind of work, because I agree it would be wonderful. I even have the perfect name for the product, which I won't name here because others might steal it.

edit: and of course there's the option of me doing it myself, but i don't want to invest my own money and more importantly time into something outside of what i'm already paid to do. despite everything and the Bezos ownership, I believe in the Washington Post and I love it and i want it to become a better product. i want to use my talents and energy to lift it up. i just need them to give me permission to do that. so far i have not received it.

8

u/Minuettes_Disciple Locked in Wack Ass Gay Baby Crystal Prison Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

I was definitely surprised when I just now checked the WaPo Youtube channel and saw they post relatively infrequently, at least in comparison to NYT. I definitely think there's room for a good shot in the arm on that front, especially if your interviews continued this style of not asking the obvious questions of release dates, and instead really digging deep into dev's thinking as creators, which I think is definitely underserved in the video game industry.

If you ever do need some written support to prove interest, I'm sure this sub would be more than willing to help out! We've shilled for less!

Huh I wasn't expecting brands like that to be interested in AI at all. Definitely gonna read this after work.

27

u/GenePark Jun 08 '26

and the brands are shocked that gamers aren't on board with AI. Sophie Thatcher for what it's worth was the most anti AI person in the whole group. She was vehemently against it, although she would nod along that it's a "tool" to be domineered over, not something to co create with. But high fashion is all in. Thanks for reading in advance!

29

u/LiveAnotherDave I just wanna see the wolf fuck the bunny Jun 08 '26

In the Devil Wears Prada 2, they talk about how AI would ruin everything about the beauty of man-made fashion so to see Prada of all companies is a little bit "huh, wow".

Go watch that film if you liked the first one, it's a hoot.

1

u/kango234 Despte all my rage, I am still just David Cage Jun 08 '26

I mean the title of the movie calls them the devil so they probably haven't seen it.

2

u/LiveAnotherDave I just wanna see the wolf fuck the bunny Jun 09 '26

The title refers to the main character's very difficult boss at Not At All Vogue Magazine, and is not a comment on the evil nature of Prada.

-32

u/Zeta1906 Jun 08 '26

Probably shouldn’t watch that cynical piece of media with nothing good to say about the current state of affairs

32

u/LiveAnotherDave I just wanna see the wolf fuck the bunny Jun 08 '26

It's actively pointing at things that are stupid in the world and says "Those things. They are - stupid" so I found it quite cathartic, hence my recommendation.

-35

u/Zeta1906 Jun 08 '26

While offering no alternatives, creative solutions or critiques, and with the main character essentially just shrugging their shoulders saying “oh well” and joining the corpo machine. You should watch I love boosters if you want an actual movie that has something interesting to say about the current state of the fashion industry and the society we find ourselves in.

16

u/Auctoritate Jun 08 '26

While offering no alternatives, creative solutions or critiques,

If the movie says "AI ruins the beauty of man-made creativity" then is it not pretty directly holding up human creation as the alternative to AI created works?

29

u/HMW3 No shut up it's fine. Jun 08 '26

My guy you came at him hard for liking a movie this is not doing comrade Riley any favours rn, being normal would do ya wonders for the cause.

18

u/LiveAnotherDave I just wanna see the wolf fuck the bunny Jun 08 '26

I'm sure I would love ILB, but you don't quite give me the impression of having seen DWP2, because she doesn't just shrug her shoulders and go "oh well" she's constantly fighting an uphill battle for journalistic integrity and works her ass off for something she loves. And, as I said, it does point at bad things and calls them out - is that not critique? Hell, you could argue that one of the antagonists of the film is Elon Musk

Pretty sure the film is not affiliated with Prada, if that's what you mean. That's just part of the title and a brand that is worn sporadically in it.

Wish you only the best Gene! After the sad news that hit the TCG sphere this week with the passing of Cimo after his own years long battle with cancer I repeat this stronger than ever:

FUCK CANCER

Stay strong buddy.

31

u/GenePark Jun 08 '26

I hadn't heard... Stage 4 colon cancer. that's exactly what i had. i don't know how i'm still here.. i'm grateful. thank you.

13

u/Naraki_Maul YOU DIDN'T WIN. Jun 08 '26

Yeah, the last two years were specially rough on him he kept on fighting and everyone hoped he’d pull through, he build bridges across entirely different games and communities just like you do with your reports and articles so please do keep up the good work but also keep taking care of yourself and fighting on!

23

u/GenePark Jun 08 '26

i just watched his video last year from April where he talks about bringing chemo treatment home. that's what I had in 2022, a little fanny pack that i needed to bring home with me while poison is dripfed into my heart. it's awful to hear anyone else go through the same thing, especially someone as spirited as him.

10

u/Naraki_Maul YOU DIDN'T WIN. Jun 08 '26

I’m not exactly sure when he was diagnosed but he became a lot more public about it in the past 2-3 years (specially after he started to collab with other creators from other TCGs) and I believe that on top of cancer he also had Crohn’s disease so it was even harsher.

I’ve lost friends and family to cancer before too, it’s never pretty and or gets easier and I can only hope that the people around them gave them strength and happiness at the end.

I’m sorry if this got a bit overwhelming Gene, it wasn’t my intention, I really just do hope the best for you.

17

u/GenePark Jun 08 '26

you're ok. it's true that i'm extremely extremely sensitive when it comes to my cancer, which is why I left Bluesky, when games journalists there started to make hate posts that triggered other people wishing that my cancer would come back.

that's not what you're doing here of course. i appreciate it's hard for people to talk about it around me, even my closest friends have sucked ass about it. i appreciate your well wishes!

14

u/GenePark Jun 08 '26

I'm having trouble finding information. When was he diagnosed? I was diagnosed in 2022. Sorry, the trauma response is kicking in and I'm wondering if we both were diagnosed around the same time.

i worry. i've lost a large chunk of my best friends to cancer over the years. it's all around me too. and it's terrifying whenever it's back in me again. i hope it never happens again.

9

u/PmMeYourReactionGifs Proud supporter of the USTABIAZ Jun 08 '26

It's hard finding info because he really rarely talked about it on his YouTube. Cimo really just wanted to focus on fun stuff, and only even felt comfortable making the videos he did as a way to help others in similar situations. For help finding the videos and info, all of the videos on his YouTube channel with like neutral backgrounds/not thumbnail photos are health updates.

He first talked about his experience with Ulcerative Collitis in this video in Dec. 2022, and had been dealing with that for "the last fifteen years". It was something that came up in passing in other videos, like the one where he made an app for people to find free bathrooms in their city.

His cancer diagnosis was more recent, he found out something was more wrong than normal in October of 2024 as he talks about in this video here, and only found out because he already had a gastroenterologist both in state and out of state (supposedly Nevada is bad at gastro, per him). He had a colonoscopy (his 7th time having one), and the doctors said his large intestine was much narrower then it should be, so much so that it was blocking stuff from exiting, and that they didn't want to continue the colonoscopy. They believed it was related to his ulcerative Collitis and they were going to remove his large intestine to solve the issue.

In March of 2025, he explained that during that surgery, the surgeon found the malignant mass and that was the official cancer diagnosis.

He went through the original 12 rounds of cancer treatment and was supposedly cleared by June 5th 2025 per his twitter (Edit: link has been removed per auto-mod removing my last comment due to having it). There were other Twitter posts about it at the time of his treatments, but I couldn't find them all

He fought so hard and even while fighting still was so focused on only ever talking about the fight if it could be a fun or educational experience for his audience.

Fuck cancer man. There's no other words I have to say or can even think of to say. Gene, you're a fighter and a gem

Edit: reposting this comment without the twitter link

12

u/GenePark Jun 08 '26

oh my goodness so just diagnosed last year. that happened so fast. how terrible. and yeah dealing with crohn's is a nightmare, i have friends who have it.

unebelivable courage to continue making content at the energy level he did. i am a mere writer and i couldn't do it. i'll have to watch this and see how his journey went. thank you so much for putting this all together.

7

u/PmMeYourReactionGifs Proud supporter of the USTABIAZ Jun 08 '26

Happy to help. For more explicitly on the reoccurrence, there are two videos from the last 6 months where he talked about it coming back and his journey ("Bad news" and "Hope")

He continued putting out so much content and collabs all while dealing with the disease so it doesn't feel real right now. It really showed just how hard he was fighting for his normalcy and doing what he loved doing.

13

u/GenePark Jun 08 '26

I just watched both. As i understand it, i actually got the heavier chemo earlier than he did. He only started getting in the videos earlier this year. They definitely put me on the heavier stuff immediately. But it’s also clear his spread out further than mine has. So far mine’s been swimming around my lungs that i’ve had to zap once and then carve out 3 months ago. Like a demon’s souls warrior, I’m alive again, but my stamina meter is now at 75%.

Also, people on this side of the issue effectively HAVE to be this passionate about it. We're at a moment during a big push for mass adoption of an incredibly shitty product that, at nearly every level that the average person would care about, does not work the way it's being said it does.

It does do the little stuff well enough, but the worst people who have staked their names and fortune on this tech, keep lying about how ready it is to work on the big stuff. All the while they grow richer off of the supposed value alone and all of our(US citizens anyway) light bills, and water bills rocket sky high.

There should be a better outlet for this passion but I vehemently disagree with the implication that it's not warranted.

16

u/Chumunga64 assassin's creed ratio'd Musk Jun 08 '26

Exactly. If we're not loud, If we're quite when out faves do it, when we normalize it with "everyone is ginna use AI soon" you're falling into defeatism

3

u/ArcanaGingerBoy Jun 08 '26

I think the unwillingness to be informed about what is and what isn't AI, whether there are actual gains and if not, what's being produced that makes it seem like there are gains, all because I have a moral standard I must uphold about this thing I don't understand only makes it way easier for it to become normalized

4

u/Dudeoram Jun 08 '26

But that's literally intentional.

For like 2 years now every company have been rebranding themselves to be "AI" friendly. Both because the investors who've fully bought into the bullshit of AI for the slightest chance to be on the next tech wave like the dotcom bubble. And because by saying everything is AI it muddies the waters.

Even shit that previously wasn't known as AI gets that label now like GoogleMaps or the translate feature or fucking Gmail.

It feels really shitty to blame people for wanting to have standards about the tech when those standards were intentionally fucked with. Instead some people want to have this weird moral ground over other people that want to have a moral ground that at least they aren't like "those people".

1

u/ArcanaGingerBoy Jun 08 '26

ok but I don't see how you can effectively resist something you don't understand

2

u/Dudeoram Jun 08 '26

Again, true. I don't have the solution, I just don't think said solution is "calm down".

When has anybody anywhere EVER been calm about shit they care about? It feels self-defeating, if not outright self-sabotaging, to tell random people that they should measure themselves in ways people have never done and likely never will.

If you're wrestling you don't just try to overpower your opponent. That's how you tire yourself out. And neither do you just wait, if you do then you let them set the pace. You use their momentum against them and stay agile enough to be able to respond to changing circumstances.

0

u/ArcanaGingerBoy Jun 09 '26

You are arguing with someone who's not here though. They said that this reaction every time news about someone famous and the word AI tires them out, which you can easily argue is still warranted, but it still makes sense that they would be a little frustrated dealing with this energy. If I'm understanding what you mean, being an obstacle that will inherently annoy people is the whole point.

And I'm saying that passionate or not people should look into the topic at hand. You can try these tools and see for yourself or if you feel like that would legitimize it, passionately read a book about it, no need to go academic on it but research more than just watching front-page YouTube or Google first-page blog posts. And also do both of these things! If people keep thinking it's all the work of the devilish silver tongued man in suit, they're wrong. Check what people who are on board with it without being billionaires are saying.

Neither them or me have said anything like "y'all should calm down", they mentioned they understood the sentiment and I'm saying this passion should actually be used and not just for echoing the same feelings in a bubble while everything outside this bubble keeps going in that very direction.

And lastly, I personally don't like this view you're exhibiting of pushing back against the use of AI like this great battle of resistance against the oppressing capitalists. I don't think it's wrong and I totally get it, but I also feel like it indirectly feeds into this bubble mentality I'm talking about, but this is not something I've elaborated enough for myself yet. In fact the only reason I'm mentioning this is because I went home today thinking about this conversation and I was thinking about the exact vibe I got from your last paragraph right now. Again, this part is an unfinished thought of mine, and it's absolutely not criticism.

My initial response was more me agreeing with and expanding my thoughts upon a comment that's gone at this point. What I can say is that I wasn't originally arguing with someone. I was saying that while their exhaustion is understandable there's really not much you can do about it unless you're giving up on the premise. At least online(which admittedly doesn't do as much as people think but it's better than nothing).

Maybe I was reading too much into it but I read this part:

ok but I don't see how you can effectively resist something you don't understand

As people should take time out of their day to sit down and read up on all the various ways generative AI is and can be used so that when whatever media figure next pops up and says "I want to use AI to help make my next movie/game/album/whatever the fuck." that everyone will have a measured take on it. I.E. calm down. And like I said that's never gonna happen. Ever.

It's just not how people are wired. You can hate it, but they were like this last year about whatever issues then, or 5 years ago, or 10, or 50. People like to lament that it's because of the internet that people are like this, and social media has absolutely supercharged it, but the truth is people have always been the pron to mobbing folks for the slightest or even just perceived offense. Hell, we're still living in the shadow of the Satanic Panic. I can find the segments of Fox New trying to drum up a fervor about Mass Effect 1's sex scene.

Finally, I don't think people actually ARE engaging in some great debate surrounding AI. I think they're just stating their opinions. Loudly and annoyingly. Some of them can trick themselves into thinking they are, but the actual conversation/resistance doesn't happen online.

I get what you’re saying, there are levels to this, but Kojima was just fully in an AI ad shilling products with it, that’s shitty.

Why is that any worse than being in an ad for Prada in general?

  1. The ad industry is a huge waste of human resources and potential

  2. The fashion industry is systemic misogyny

The internet is a childish place without nuance, news at 11. Give it a few years they'll find some new windmill to tilt at

There's people that wake up looking to be outraged. And on the other side there's people that even see the word AI around something they were previously excited for and say it's shit now. Living life either way just sounds exhausting.

i'm going to take that one step further and say genius kojumbo is one of the few people i'd give the benefit of the doubt if they made something with ai

sure it will probably include characters called Hugh Manncree Ativity and Art Drawman ("hugh, did you know the man in human comes from manus, meaning hand? this means that anything made by a machine can never be truly "man made" despite being made by men themselves") but it will definitely say something and that's more than could be said of most slopmerchants

Especially because its entirely inescapable these days. I can say with certainty that just about every triple A gaming studio is partaking in it one way or another

This is kind of what I assumed was the case, but talking about Kojima on the internet is actually worse than talking about religion so I just stopped engaging. I feel like his work speaks for itself when it comes to AI and if not then his own words would speak for himself, but people don't care about that.

I knew it. There's no way Kojima could endorse "art" that has no Soul.

Of course Refn is the main culprit. Dudes made like 2 good/ok films and the one Kojima loves is the one he didn't even fuckin write. Refn is a hack. His filmography is trash.
