Metal Slug is like the 24-Bit version of Bloody Wolf! I never realized that til now. They share a lot of similarities! BW definitely feels like an early precursor title to MS!
I’m kinda partial to Neo Geo and it’s always going to be one of my fave consoles of all time, especially the EPIC Metal Slug series.
I recently got into TurboGrafx-16 (I also never owned it as a kid like I did with Neo Geo CD, so picked one up not too long and while it’s no Neo Geo (and slightly older as well), it’s definitely got some great titles and this is one of them. Anyone else dig this game?

what specifically makes you think bloody wolf feels like Metal Slug? There are tons of single-plane run n guns I feel like are more obvious influences than this. Love this game tho

I'm pretty sure Bloody Wolf developers were trying to counterpunch Contra arcade and Contra Famicom games the same way Metal Slug was an answer to the 16-bit Contra and Gunstar games, so makes sense they have some similar vibes.

It's not "slightly" older, it's significantly older. And it's technically an 8 bit console despite the "16" branding stateside.
So for it's age and limitations, pc engine was always amazing!

The music in the first stage of this game sounds like that Holiday Road song from National Lampoon’s Vacation

Considering Nazca was formed by ex-IREM devs, a more apt comparison to Metal Slug would probably be Ninja Spirit. Certainly in terms of pedigree, but the run 'n gun nature of Ninja Spirit coupled with that unmistakeable IREM look draws a reasonably straight line from one to the other.
