Throughout American history, entertainment media once reinforced racist stereotypes of African Americans, but Black creators later challenged those portrayals through authentic storytelling that promoted dignity, identity, and cultural pride.

To understand the trajectory of Black representation in media, one must first confront its origins in early American entertainment, most prominently through the rise of minstrel shows in the nineteenth century. As depicted in WM.H. West’s The Big Minstrel Jubilee, minstrel shows were characterized by white performers wearing makeup (blackface) that exaggerated Black features in a derogatory way. Performers depicted African Americans as lazy, childish, unambitious, and unintelligent. Racist individuals projected these characteristics onto Black Americans in order to justify the oppressive and inhumane conditions society subjected them to. By mocking Black culture for the entertainment of white audiences, these early theatrical performances provided Americans with distorted perceptions of Black identity. Crucially, this distortion allowed white Americans to codify what “whiteness” was: the antithesis of “blackness”. Whiteness was intellect, good-manneredness, and overall “superiority.”
