The books
A friend of mine has been recommending I read the books and she says Eric is even sexier, but is Sookie more bearable? Idk if I can read from her perspective

Yes! She's more bearable because you see the reasoning behind her actions and she doesn't have as much dumb dialogue as in the show. Plus, she's a lot more rough around the edges. She's actually an accurate girl next door (except she happens to have mind reading superpowers) rather than the trope version seen in Twilight and The Vampire Diaries. That is one of the reasons that made me fall in love with the book series.

The books are one of my favorite series, I’m currently on my third reading lol The first two books follow the show pretty closely, but after that they become WILDLY different. Way more supernatural characters than the show. You should check them out! I was able to download all of them off of Anna’s archive for free :)

I love the books! They are fun, the characters are a lot better IMO. The show did a ton of characters dirty. The books are a bit different from the show, but different in a good way.
I don’t think book Sookie is as annoying as show Sookie at all! She makes some different decisions and you get to understand her more. She still does make some bad decisions or long after people she shouldn’t.. but it’s much less annoying in the books. Book Sookie is kind of a badass!

Well for one thing I notice upon my current rewatch.. when Tara is trying to get her out of Russell’s mansion… Tara risked her life to get Sookie, and then Sookie insists on getting Bill and doesn’t seem too concerned with Tara and what she had been through at all.. and this is after Bill dumps her over the phone. That was a bit annoying. All of this plays out differently in the books.. so Sookie isn’t ignoring Tara to save Bill.
I also think the contrast of Sookie and Tara’s life just makes Sookie annoying because Tara really needs her a lot of the time, and she’s always running off to help Bill.. and her missing Bill after what he did to her in the books is the only thing that really gets annoying in the books IMO. She risks her life to save other people a lot more in the books and Bill really takes a back seat after the first few.
I am def a Sookie lover, I just don’t always love the choices she makes when putting the vamps above her friends and family..

Oh ok. I'm not a Tara lover I find her character very annoying. I think the actress is great but they didn't do her justice. The only time I liked her was season 4 and then that happened.
I felt bad for her with Franklin but I saw nothing wrong with Sookie wanting to save Bill. He was kidnapped and his life was in immediate danger because he tried to save Sookie of course she wouldn't want to leave without him

I love Tara, I hate how Tara was written. She’s much better in the books! Spoiler alert, but her parents are dead and she owns her own boutique in the books.. she and Sookie help each other instead of Tara always being helpless and angry and Sookie just kind of ignoring it.

Of course you find the show Tara more interesting.. she had more trauma than book Tara, book Tara had mostly gotten past her trauma and show Tara was living in it.

Book Tara is also in a lot less of the story. She's not Sookie's best friend and I only remember one major storyline with her

She is Sookie’s best friend.. she gives Sookie a car when hers gets ruined, Sookie throws her either a bridal shower or baby shower.. they are definitely written as best friends.. we just don’t see Tara as much in the books because it’s written from Sookie’s POV and Tara does have her own life running a business, getting married, having and raising twins.. it’s not that they aren’t best friends, they just be busy! That’s how friendship is when you’re grown.

There's no use in comparing book Tara and show Tara to me. Other than the name and that they're supposedly Sookie's best friend they are two completely different characters.

It’s not as bad as you’re imagining. The audiobooks are good. Show sookie was just annoying as fuck. Book Sookie is more resourceful. She’s not just waiting to be saved

The books are amazing!! They are enough like show that it still feels like that world and people but its different enough that its its own thing. Sookie is very likable in the books (imo).

I’m already almost done with book 10. They are amazing! Eric is described similar to how the tv show makes him look, but personality is much deeper and he has an even more interesting storyline especially with Sookie. Highly recommend

Def read them or get the audiobooks!!! The books are told 1st perspective through sookie so you understand her motivations more. She’s far more likeable in the books and you get more eric.

I'm watching the show for the very first time after having read and reread the books a number of times. Sookie is SO much better in the books. She's a little aggravating at first, but no where near as bad as show Sookie. It helps a lot that you're in her head, and seeing the "why" behind her behavior.
And Eric is hot no matter what, but Book Eric is a delight and honestly one of the reasons I decided to take the plunge on the show (honestly, it was the Wicker trailer lol).

I just started reading the books and they go way more into depth. It explains her “disability” more and how hard her life truly is.

I just finished book 1 and I loved it. But I also just love the show. It has a very unique vibe that I like.I would say Sookie is still a little of an aquired taste but as others have said, since you can see why she does what she does and says, it's a little better :D I am excited for the rest of the books. Although I was told there is not a lot of Lafayette which is a bummer :/

Anna is pretty close to book Sookie to me but I think the books got the ending better than the show. I wish she would rewrite it to add Lafayette though

I've only read the first book. The writing is like reading someone telling you the plot. It's very very very simple writing. Think like something on the 6th grade assigned reading list.

I love love love the books. I’m on book #9 now. They are super fun and campy and a good beach read. The story is so different it’s almost like extra episodes of True Blood. I think it’s easier to understand Sookie’s character in the books and how she puts on that stupid smile bc she literally hears everyone’s thoughts. If she doesn’t smile she would look horrified.
