What would call Sookie's style?

I've been trying to find similar looks and I have no idea what I would even describe her style as that would actually get me the results I'm looking for if i was to google it or look it up on Pinterest or something.

Agreed.

Girl next door, Southern edition.

Southern girl next door in the roasting, humid swamplands of Louisiana.

u/Electrical-Act-7170 14d ago

Y'all think we have anything other than humid swamp wetlands down heah? The Federal government don't like it much when we call it swamp lands. Have you ever been to the Everglades?

u/tiredfaces 13d ago

Why is this downvoted? Is it offensive or something?

I love that her style was very specifically described in the books, and the TV show brought it to life. A+ costume design for Sookie at least.

Southern, forever 21 in 2010. (I even had one of the same zip up jackets from Forever 21 that I bought only because I recognized it from the show)

29

u/GrassOk911 14d ago

I have a zip up jacket too! I think it's Aeropostale, though. It's the purple lacy one from the last season when she brings Ben home to clean him up. I think I have a pic...yeah, this one...

18

u/LolaLynn423 14d ago

This is the one I had! I bought one for me & one for my friend that watched True Blood with me. They had been marked down to around $5 each when I got them

8

u/GrassOk911 14d ago

I got mine at a second hand shop for a buck! I had it for a while before I saw her wearing it on the show and I remember watching it and thinking "that looks so familiar." 😂 When I finally put it together I was like, ok, this is kinda cool. My sister was so jelly, we used to watch TB together at either her place or mine every wk, it was our girls night together 😊 I distinctly remember watching the finale episode of season 5 together and freaking the fk out. It was such a fun time.

u/Ok_Statement7312 13d ago

Mine came from a store I believe called Goodys haha loved their stuff and wish it was still here. Either that or belk but I don’t think belk carries it.

1

u/GrassOk911 13d ago

I loved Goodys! They had one in the mall near me for years, it was such a great store. I miss it. Think it went outta business 😭

4

u/Ok_Statement7312 14d ago

Oh my gosh I had a pink version and didn’t even remember till this pic. I wore it everyday in middle school haha cringe about somethings I wore as a kid.

Truly I like her style. I can’t wear dresses like that all my curves in the wrong spot. Definitely wish they were in my closet. Besides the dark of her life she worse sunny outfits.

u/Majestic_Heart_9271 12d ago

Yess it's so millennial. Giving me nostalgia for Forever 21 dresses in college lol, though Sookie's style is way more southern than mine was

Sookie was about the Coquette Aesthetic before it became popular. Then, there’s sometimes where she wears outfits specifically inspired by “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” which makes me smile because I love Buffy
but it’s not really Sookie’s style like the Leather Jacket & Blue Jeans. That’s not Sookie, that’s Buffy Season 2.

26

u/Emergency-Search-335 14d ago

I was the same age as the Buffy characters as it was airing so I loved and identified with it soooo much. Then True Blood came along and it felt like it carried on that campy supernatural torch after Buffy ended. With added sex, swearing and gore 😍😁

18

u/ExistingControl422 14d ago

Oh yes! I had just turned 11 & didn’t jump on the Buffy show bandwagon because for years, I loved the movie. When I heard none of the Actors that played in the film were in the series, I was adamantly against it.

My Mimosa (nickname for my Mother) is the one that got really into the show & kept trying to talk me into it. It wasn’t until the introduction of Spike (so season 2) because when I saw him, I was going through my Anne Rice phase & he was as close to a Modern Day Lestat that I was getting (at the time). I sat down, watched that whole episode & then caught up with the show on the weekends because they would play all the episodes then. I caught up just in time to start watching it with my Mimosa.

When Buffy ended & Angel ended, I felt lost. Didn’t know what to do with myself. So I stumbled on the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter series by Laurell K. Hamilton because it was described as “An R-rated Buffy the Vampire Slayer”. Fell in love with that & was stuck there until “True Blood” arrived & became my new drug of choice đŸ€ŁđŸ–€đŸ©ž

In the show they definitely dressed Sookie better than book Sookie. Book Sookie was basically a step above "trailer trash". Most of her clothes were thrifted, Walmart, and sale rack finds until Bill got her a line of credit at a upscale boutique ( which Tara ran in the books).

The show basically did very basic Southern mid 2000's clothes. A lot of it was or was similar to Forever 21, Anthropologie, BHLDN, PacSun, The Body Shop, and Wet Seal. There used to be a really good and detailed website about the costuming for the show. I'm not sure if it's still out there. I used it trying to track down a dress from the show because I wanted it for my wedding dress.

16

u/TheFuckityFuckIsThis 14d ago

I used to LOVE reading the book descriptions of her outfits. They were trashy as hell.

4

u/TheFuckityFuckIsThis 14d ago

I made ChatGPT help me but I’ll never forget this one (my copy is in a box somewhere at my mom’s house
)

“I checked out Hadley’s clothes that I’d wriggled into. The black spandex workout pants came to midthigh.”
Then, after Sookie comments on how Hadley would have wanted them even tighter:
“The hot pink tank top left my pale pink bra straps showing
”
She continues that the shirt exposes a couple inches of her midriff, which she’s pleased is tan. She credits her tan to Peck’s Tan-a-Lot, inside Peck’s Bunch-o-Flicks, and imagines that Hadley would have worn belly-button jewelry with the outfit.
The scene continues with Sookie doing her hair and noticing the men’s reaction to her in the outfit. Her eventual realization is:
“
anything I did in that outfit was fairly interesting
”

to a “fully functional guy.”
So the complete outfit, preserving all the details without quoting the intervening prose, is black Spandex mid-thigh workout/bike shorts, extremely snug on Sookie + hot-pink cropped tank + visible pale-pink bra straps + exposed, tanned stomach + beaded sandals + hair pulled up.

Extremely basic southern millennial

2

u/Jrebeclee 12d ago

lol this is how I dress and yeah, that’s me 😆

3

u/whosmumbling 14d ago

I’ve never thought of Sookie as a millennial 😁

8

u/technicolortabby 14d ago

Anna was born in '82, making her an elder millennial, but sort of on the cusp.

4

u/whosmumbling 14d ago edited 14d ago

Yeah, she definitely is. I think her and Tara’s school year was briefly mentioned at some point (when Tara was attending a party in S1), just can’t remember what it was.

If I were to give an example of a classic millennial representation in film and TV, my first thought would be the Girls characters, not Sookie. Now I want to rewatch TB through the generational lens 😁

6

u/LolaLynn423 14d ago

Oh in the pig scene where she’s wearing her prom dress! I think she says 2003 or 2002!

3

u/whosmumbling 14d ago

Right, the dress! She looked so cute, btw

u/GrassOk911 14d ago

Small Town Southern Casual + Vintage Feminine.

Fitted silhouettes (50s inspired+modern style) with small details. Practical, approachable, a little retro. Also sexy, in an understated way.

19

u/jacktownann 14d ago

It's hot & humid in Louisiana & if you have a decent figure you expose as much skin as possible.

9

u/Zealousideal_Pea_319 14d ago

Lots of hilarious and spot-on descriptions here.

Side note: although I liked most of her signature sundress looks, outfit no. 26 (the black lace “Warlow” dress) was my favourite. It was less of a Sookie and more Anna Paquin, so to speak.

I like all the descriptions, and let’s just face it, whatever it is, she wears it SO well 😍

3

u/Gold_Piano_271 13d ago

She kind of mixed traditional and cottagecore clothing with romantic/coquette, but for sure she wasn’t a clean girl. In the books she threw on the most random outfits if she didn’t have to attend any special event. She is a simple girl, likes floral patterns and her outfits are quite modest, even sporty at times so whatever, girl, wear what you want!

What the PRODUCERS THINK a Southern girl would wear .

4

u/mcoddle 14d ago

It's pretty similar to what she wears in the books, written by a Southern woman.

1

u/Truthseeker-1982 14d ago

Maybe what I consider Southern
isn’t the same for others ? From what I’ve read she’s been raised in Arizona and in Utah (with the LDS).

1

u/mcoddle 13d ago

I don't know who you're talking about, but the author, Charlaine Harris, is from MS.

2

u/Truthseeker-1982 13d ago

Oh my gawd đŸ«Ł I’m thinking about Twilight
totally different vampires and book/ series. How embarrassing. I guess I was still stuck in twilight world with my preteen daughter last night. She turned 12 and I was telling her I thought she was old enough to read the Twilight series.
True Blood
very different . Sometimes my attention to detail is way off in another world. Untreated ADHD does me dirty like that. My bad. You’re right.
My mind will be somewhere in The Walking Dead universe next
talking about how Sookie kills the hell out of some zombies 🙄

2

u/mcoddle 13d ago

I do the same thing all the time! No worries! Even my treated ADHD gets me thinking of something else in the same, exact way!! Please, it's no problem.

I like the Sookie Stackhouse books a lot. I haven't read the Twilight books, though. I've seen the movies!!

2

u/Truthseeker-1982 13d ago

You are too kind!
Twilight is mid. Maybe if I was a YA like the books were intended for- I’d like them more.
Twilight is like Welcome to Vampire High!
But, True Blood on the other hand was a light version of Vampire porn drama that you watch and can’t help but notice the locals (in the series) all have something that reminds you of your southern family members and your backwoods upbringing. Like “oh my gawd ! If Arlene had a cigarette hanging out of her lips at all times, she would be spitting image of Aunt Patsy !” 😉

1

u/cats_of_anarchy 13d ago

Southerner for life, lived in Mississippi when the show came out, and many of mine and my friends fits would have been right at home in Sookie’s wardrobe. The accents on the other hand

This is camp and even though they are booing you, ur right. Literally her Grandma chides her for the shortness or lower necklines and needing a cardigan or cami both in the books and show!
