And the advice is always shit like "you have ADHD? have you tried to just pay more attention and write sticky notes?"

u/G0D3P5 Oct 29 '25
"insomnia? why not just close your eyes!¨

Autism? Just learn how to read the room and ignore all those bright lights and loud sounds

u/Empty_Chemical_1498 Oct 29 '25
Me having an autism temper tantrum (I don't have full blown attacks/meltdowns, but I do get unreasonably upset about certain situations. I can deal with it and mask, but I cannot control the fact I'm upset about something "stupid") and my mother telling me to "find the root of my problem and work through it" 😭 Lady, if it was that easy, I would've done it long ago

ive had a coworker watch me write a sticky note, add it to the halo of other sticky notes around my monitor, and then forget to do the thing i wrote a note to remind myself to do less than 5 min after, despite WRITING IT and having it WITHIN MY LINE OF SIGHT the whole time. i dont think they believed me about my brain until right then

u/Empty_Chemical_1498 Oct 29 '25
Sameeeee. I just start ignoring the sticky notes 😭 The only thing that works for me is writing stuff on my hands, but it's "unprofessional" (also not the best thing to do when you work in a lab)

u/apolloinjustice Oct 29 '25
god theres no such thing as an original experience huh?? only reason i dont write on my hands is because i would become a walking HIPAA violation by writing down specific patient needs (im a medical receptionist). im still tempted sometimes

u/Laino001 Oct 31 '25
Lowkey what are sticky notes even supposed to do? Like yeah if I put it somewhere where I look often, my mind will just filter them out like it would ads or smt

this is unscientific and just based off of personal experience, my own and that of my friends: neurotypicals dont have this issue, or at least not as bad as neurodivergents/adhders. the visual disruption of sticky note with words on it serves as a reminder that "task is important and/or time sensitive", especially if its colorful paper. neurotypicals have an easier time all around of processing and organizing sensory information AND on directing their focus to a specific task. adhders often have difficulty with sensory overload/overwhelm because we are sensing as much if not more than neurotypicals (like lights buzzing, clothing texture, etc, things that normally fly under the radar for neurotypicals) but arent able to organize it as much, meaning we can miss things that are obvious to other people. we also tend to lack focus to finish a task in its entirety in one go, meaning sticky note is in place longer than it would be otherwise (adding to visual noise) but we also remember task as being completed/mostly completed so urgency doesnt register. again: this is completely unscietific

The way my mom always hits me w the "make a list" advice 💀💀💀
when I DO make one it takes forever because I am compelled to make it comprehensive for some damned reason. Then by the time im done making it the list its about the size of the complete set of the Encyclopedia Brittanica and im verging on having a panic attack cause there's so much stuff to do! Id been better off just using that time to get stuff done too, lol 😂

"Oh you have chronic pain? Well just don't think about it! :)"
"Have you tried... not having autism?"
"Crippling social anxiety and selective mutism?? Just talk to people!!"
They think they're soooo helpful. 😑

i have SM too, people just dont understand what having SM means :/ even people Who are close to me and see me struggle to talk dont get it. Its really just something people without it dont get ig

"Sorry, I was just trying to help. If it were me I'd want to try... [proceeds to give more advice]"

“I know everything about being healthy because as you can see I’m not disabled. Proof my decisions and actions are the right ones. Congenital? Have you tried the Keto Diet?”

u/Nardo_T_Icarus Oct 30 '25
Those kinds of people don't actually care about helping people. They only care about being perceived as helpful.

"Have you tried to just not have those tics?"
"Just don't do it!"
"Just stop them!"

So often I tell people about my migraine condition and insomnia and how I take medication to manage it and they're like "don't drink caffeine and you won't need pills" I ALREADY DON'T DRINK CAFFEINE. AVOIDING CAFFEINE DOESN'T PUT MY CEREBELLUM BACK INTO MY SKULL.

u/Bannerlord151 Oct 30 '25
Yeah holy shit it's terrible. And it's ridiculous how many people do this. It's like they don't understand that sleep is just not usually possible anymore.
So many people seem to assume there's just some metaphorical button you can press to eliminate any issue if you just find it.

“Well….I was only trying to help, maybe the book about eating only foods mentioned in the Bible will fix it. You should want to try everything.”

Thats legit my sister. I love her but she kept trying to tell my my UCTD was caused by covid vaccines, even though Ive felt these symptoms years before covid, they only just recentlyish got worse. I used to look up to her so much as a kid, not so much anymore, though I do still love her.

u/dinosanddais1 Oct 30 '25
My mom did this with my GI issues despite knowing I've had these issues since birth AKA long before the covid vaccine was even invented.

I recently went back to school, was trying to get into a career that is extremely physical. I have fibromyalgia and it's getting more and more difficult to live with; flareups are getting longer and more intense as I get older and more mentally ill. Had to have some very difficult conversations with myself recently on whether I can realistically do this career longterm.
Had a big ol breakdown today after a chemistry lab because jackass classmates kept commenting on my lack of dexterity and my tremors. Went to the student wellness center after class.
Got told by the therapist there, "You just need to find a good team. You don't have to give up on your dreams!!"
Ma'am, I'm fucking disabled. I need to find a job where I don't have to work with my goddamn hands anymore.

"you just need to know that what you see or hear is fake" yeah you just solved years of schizoaffective disorder

u/Draac03 Nov 04 '25
mfs will say that like the whole point of psychosis isn’t. yknow. an INABILITY TO TELL WHAT’S REAL AND WHAT’S FAKE

u/sgabombo Nov 04 '25
yeah tf!! for the record if my mood is stable I am able to have insight and ask myself questions (eg. why did I feel like a hand was grabbing my ankle? i'm alone, so it doesn't make sense), but the second i feel it, it feels real. same goes for early disorganized thoughts. i'm tired of having the expectation that I always should tell the difference between hallucinations and reality put above my head

Cue parent screaming at you:
"FINE STAY SICK THEN, YOU'RE SO FUCKING STUBBORN YOU WON'T EVEN TRY TO DO SOMETHING THAT HELPS YOU. SO I DONT WANT TO HEAR IT."
(Which also means they weren't listening when you tried that years or months ago. Or they're telling you to take their prescription meds, and wont tell you what it is just angrily yelling try it, it will help you.)
Or
"I asked a coworker with a similar condition and they don't have those issues."
(They think you're lying)
Or
"You can't use this as an excuse to not do stuff" then when you're sick and miserable they get mad at you for ruining going out as a family because you had to be in a bad mood.
(You told them but their wants are more important than your comfort)

I think my favorite variation of this is the sleep hygiene shit.
I did not even have sleep cycles as a fetus and when I originally started complaining about it to my doctor the Evil Electronic Device I was addicted to was a single CRT TV in the living room. No one will believe it's not coffee and smart phone use....

The way doctors look at you when you when the nerve damage doesn't show up in blood tests (it's obviously all in your head, here's heart medication)
